Maritime Diplomacy in the 21St Century Downloaded by [University of Defence] at 20:29 19 May 2016 Maritime Diplomacy in the 21st Century This book aims to redefine maritime diplomacy for the modern era. Maritime diplomacy encompasses a spectrum of activities, from co- operative measures such as port visits, exercises and humanitarian assistance to persuasive deployment and coercion. It is an activity no longer confined to just navies, but in the modern era is pursued by coastguards, civilian vessels and non-state groups. As states such as China and India develop, they are increasingly using this most flexible form of soft and hard power. Maritime Diplomacy in the 21st Century describes and analyses the concept of maritime diplomacy, which has been largely neglected in academic literature. The use of such diplomacy can be interesting not just for the parochial effects of any activity, but because any event can reflect changes in the international order, while acting as an excellent gauge for the existence and severity of international tension. Further, maritime diplomacy can act as a valve through which any tension can be released without resort to conflict. Written in an accessible but authoritative style, this book describes the continued use of coercion outside of war by navies, while also situating it more clearly within the various roles and effects that maritime forces have in peacetime. This book will be of much interest to students of seapower, naval history, strategic studies, diplomacy and international relations.     Gunboat Diplomacy Political Bias, Trade Policy, and War∗ Brendan Cooley† 13 November 2019 Abstract Countries with deep trading relationships rarely ght wars with one another. Here, I develop a theory of trade, war, and political bias, in which both trade and war are endogenous objects. Governments can rectify poor market access conditions abroad through war and subsequent regime change, in which the victorious country installs a liberal “puppet” government abroad. Trade policy bargaining is therefore conducted “in the shadow of power,” with counterfactual wars shaping the policy choices that prevail in times of peace. When peace prevails, militarily weak countries are more open to trade than powerful ones, all else equal. Equilibrium trade policies balance domestic interests against military threats from abroad. War is less likely between liberal governments because they prefer less protectionist trade policies. As a result, trade ows and the probability of peace are positively correlated in equilibrium, even though trade does not cause peace. For these countries, as the expected need for military force relinquished, its actual use increased. Left with a need for improved tools for handling the increasing number of international security issues, the strategy of coercive diplomacy has never been of more current interest. This thesis seeks to address a lacuna in contemporary theorizing about coercive diplomacy, namely the under-theorization of the adversary. Through within-case and cross-case analysis of the NATO interventions in Bosnia- Herzegovina and Kosovo, I attempt to show how both scientists and political decision-makers can benefit from a more in-depth analysis of the coerced. The thesis takes the theoretical framework developed by Bruce Jentleson and Christopher Whytock as a starting point. As a significant step in the right direction, their model of coercive diplomacy better accounts for the motivations, interests, and expected reactions of the target state.

Gunboat diplomacy, associated with chiefly the activities of the Great Powers, means the use of naval power directly or indirectly as an aggressive diplomatic instrument. It seems highly probable to see many examples of this coercive diplomacy in the world history, particularly after the French Revolution. Naturally, the Ottoman Empire, always attracted attention of the Great Powers, was exposed to this policy of the Powers. During the nineteen century, the rivalry among the European Powers on the Ottoman territorial integrity became a common characteristic that led them to implement gunboat diplomacy on all occasions. In this context, this article firstly offers a critical analysis of gunboat diplomacy of the Great Powers on the Ottoman Empire within the dimension of two specific examples: The Salonika Incident and Armenian reform demands. In addition, it aims to contribute to the understanding of gunboat diplomacy of the Great Powers and Ottoman response by evaluating it from native and foreign literatures.     Empire and National Character: British Imperialism in Books from the “Third Reich” Victoria Jane Stiles, MA, MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2015 Abstract This thesis examines the variety of representations and rhetorical deployments of the theme of British Imperialism within books published in the “Third Reich”. The thesis considers these books not only as vehicles for particular ideas and arguments but also as consumer objects and therefore as the product of a series of compromises between the needs of a host of actors, both official and commercial. It further traces the origins of the component parts of these texts via the history of reuse of images and extracts and by identifying earlier examples of particular tropes of “Englishness” and the British Empire. British imperial history was a rich source of material for National Socialist writers and educators to draw on and lent itself to a wide variety of arguments. Britain could be, in turns, a symbol of “Nordic” strength, a civilisation in decline, a natural ally and protector of Germany, or a weak, corrupt, outdated entity, controlled by Germany’s supposed enemies. Drawing on a long tradition of comparing European colonial records, the British Empire was also used as a benchmark for Germany’s former imperial achievements, particularly in moral arguments regarding the treatment of indigenous populations. Through its focus on books, which were less ephemeral than media such as newspaper and magazine articles, radio broadcasts or newsreels, the thesis demonstrates how newer writings sought to recontextualise older material in the light of changing circumstances.

    Sehr geehrte Freunde der Philatelie! Es war eine Menge Arbeit, aber nun ist er fertig: Der Katalog zur 71. Auktion am 21.Au- gust 2004. Ich habe es nicht gezählt, aber es stecken in diesem Katalog sicherlich weit über tausend Arbeitsstunden. Und ich glaube, die viele Arbeit hat sich gelohnt. Der vorliegende Katalog beschreibt fast genau 10.000 Lose, von denen fast 3500 auch abgebildet wurden. Dabei gibt es mehrere Schwerpunkte: Vielleicht am interessantesten ist die Auflösung einer der schönsten Sammlungen Deut- sche Feldpost im II. Weltkrieg. Dabei sind u.a. Rhodos 8A gest. (Ausruf 1350), 8A (*) (Ausruf 2000); Kreta 7B auf Brief (Ausruf 7500), Hela 13b a. BS, Krim 15I a. BS (800), Kurland-Schnellbrief, mehrere Belege Ostpreussen-Feldpost, Funknach- richtenkarten von Milos, Dünkirchen, St. Nazaire, Kreta, La Rochelle, Festungs- post von Breslau, Frankfurt/Oder, Lorient, St. Nazaire, Royan, zahlreiche Belege aus Stalingrad. Ein Auktionsprogramm, das nicht nur zahlreiche Raritäten enthält, son- dern auch zeitgeschichtlich äußerst wertvoll ist! Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt bilden die Deutschen Kolonien und Auslandspostämter. Wir konnten wieder ein umfangreiches Angebot an Stempeln und Briefen zusammenstel- len, im Markenteil sind neben praktisch sämtlichen Standardwerten u.a. sämtliche amtlich verausgabten China-Handstempel (von 3 bis 80 Pf.) dabei, Karolinen 1/6I kpl., Ma- rianen 2/6I und Marshall-Inseln 1/6IU **, 1Ia und 1Ib a. oder die enorm seltene 7b auf . Kenner wissen, daß diese Marke seltener als eine 1I ist — nur bis zur Michelre- daktion ist dieses Wissen leider bis heute nicht durchgekommen. Gut 110 Seepost- und Marineschiffspostbelege ergänzen dieses Sammelgebiet sehr schön. Altdeutschland bietet diesmal Schwerpunkte bei Bayern, Württemberg und Hannover.
