Esta primeira passagem é, porém, desde logo rotulada como sendo um erro. Contudo, enquanto o narrador estabelece uma verdade universal, outro erro surge proeminentemente como parte da dimensão factual da crónica. Através da análise intermedial dos textos e de xilogravuras, o presente texto pretende investigar então a forma como este incu- nábulo expõe uma variedade de inverdades com o eventual intuito de integrar uma destas na sua ideologia. Abstract: Although firmly grounded in Christian doctrine, the 1493Nuremberg Chronicle opens with an enu- meration of conflicting ideas regarding the origin of the world and of mankind. This initial passage is quickly and effectively done away with by being labelled erroneous. However, while the narrator continues to estab- lish a universal truth, one of the errors reappears, prominently, as part of the chronicle’s facticity. Through the intermedial analysis of texts and woodcuts the paper investigates how the incunable exposes a multitude of falsehoods to eventually integrate one of them into its ideology. Leiden: Brill, 2013 Final Submiited Version The manner in which Meister Eckhart has been viewed by scholars has changed considerably over the centuries.1 Nevertheless, the Bull In agro dominico of 27th March 1329 already points towards the future directions that Eckhart research would subsequently take. There Eckhart is described in three-fold manner as ‘from Germany, a doctor of sacred theology (as it is said) and a professor of the Order of Preachers’.2 These characterisations of Eckhart continue to frame the debate – in other words, his connection with the German philosophical and mystical tradition, his status as a University of Paris master and Scriptural exegete, and his role as a theologian and vernacular preacher for the Dominican Order. The revival of Eckhart during the nineteenth century uncovered many more Eckharts. Indeed, the basis for Eckhart’s growing popularity in the twentieth century was laid during the nineteenth century when Eckhart was rediscovered by the Romantics. Eckhart was initially revived by the eclectic engineer, Catholic Romantic, Franz von Baader (1765-1841), a friend of Schelling, who discovered Eckhart through his reading of Boehme. Baader inspired Hegel to refer to Eckhart in his Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion, quoting Eckhart’s saying that the eye with which we see God is also the eye with which God sees us.3 The nineteenth-century revival broadly represented Eckhart as a speculative, dialectical thinker. -

The dissertation focuses on two central texts that are indicative of two distinct historical moments of the Protestant Reformation in England. Thomas More's Utopia was first published in Latin at Louvain in 1516, roughly one year before the publication of Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses signaled the commencement of the Reformation on the Continent and roughly a decade before the Henrician Reformation in England. As a humanist text, Utopia contains themes pertinent to internal Church reform, while simultaneously warning polemicists and ecclesiastics to leave off their paltry squabbles over non-essential religious matters, lest the unity of the Church catholic be imperiled. More's engagement with the Holy Land is influenced by contemporary researches into the languages of that region, most notably the search for the original and perfect language spoken before the episode at Babel. As the confusion of tongues at Babel functions etiologically to account for the origin of all ideological conflict, it was thought that the rediscovery of the prima lingua might resolve all conflict. -

Written in a short period of time during a visit to the home of Thomas More, Erasmus considered it a "little diversion" from his "serious work." Yet both contemporaries and later generations have appreciated "this laughing parody of every form and rank of human life." In this selection, Erasmus belittles one of his favorite objects of scorn-the monks. Erasmus, The Praise of Folly Those who are the closest to these [the theologians] in happiness are generally called "the religious" or "monks," both of which are deceiving names, since for the most part they stay as far away from religion as possible and frequent every sort of place. I cannot, however, see how ally life could be more gloomy than the life of these monks if I [Folly] did not assist them in many ways. Though most people detest these men so much that accidentally meeting one is considered to be bad luck, the monks themselves believe that they are magnificent creatures. One of their chief beliefs is that to be illiterate is to be of a high state of sanctity, and so they make sure that they are not able to read. -

ASSAULTS ON THE FAITH: IMAGINING JEWS AND CREATING CHRISTIANS IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES By BROOKE FALK A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Art History Written under the direction of Dr. Laura Weigert And approved by New Brunswick, New Jersey January, 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Assaults on the Faith: Imagining Jews and Creating Christians in the Late Middle Ages By BROOKE FALK Dissertation Director: Laura Weigert My dissertation examines manuscripts and early printed books of the “Fortress of Faith” (Fortalitium fidei) as influential works in late medieval constructions of Jewish and Christian identity. I argue that the “Fortress of Faith” moves beyond traditional polemics in its comprehensive use of popular argumentative approaches, particularly in its use of images, which appealed to a variety of late medieval audiences. I suggest a revised stemma, giving preference to the influence of woodcuts over miniatures. Through both types of images, Christians were armed with mental pictures of themselves as knights guarding a Christian fortress. The first two chapters study surviving manuscripts and incunabula of the text with regard to their material execution, visual imagery, verbal content, and regional production and dissemination. The presentation of the text evolved with its shifting audience from the time it was composed around 1460 by a Castilian Franciscan friar to the time it was translated into French and illuminated around 1480 and also while it was printed numerous times between 1471 and 1525. -

229 CONTINUITY AND DISCONTINUITY BETWEEN THE MEDlEVAL MYSTICS AND THE SPIRITUALS OF THE RADICAL REFORMATION INTRODUCTION The question of whether or not there are links between the medieval mystics, particularly those of South Germany, and the more radical elements of the reformation has brought forth much dispute. There is a large literature, much of it polemical in style. The confessional approach to history has led to condemnation of the radicals from both Protestant and Catholic theologians. A small group, with an apologetic approach, has defended the anabaptist cause as distinct from the more radical and revolutionary elements, but whilst attempting to distance itself from what Zeman calls 'the embarrassing anomaly of the Miinsterite Kingdom'.1 While the Mennonites have done much research on the period, some of it is biased because of its apologetic nature. For example, we read in The Mennonite Encyclopedia that Thomas Miintzer had nothing essential in common with anabaptism and was not even interested in adult baptism.2 Miintzer was certainly a radical but to say that he did not accept adult baptism contradicts the evidence. Conrad Grebel wrote to Miintzer in 1524 that 'On the matter of baptism thy book pleases us well, and we desire to be further instructed by thee. ,3 Grebel goes on in the same letter to say that infant baptism is a 'senseless, blasphemous abomination' and that Miintzer knows this ten times better than himself. Not only did Miintzer accept adult baptism, but this was recognized by Grebel, who is accepted in The Mennonite Encyclopedia as 'not only the founder of the Swiss brethren movement and the later Mennonite Church but also one of the prophetic spirits of Christendom in its great and insistent tradition of reform and revival. -
