[Myanmar] Research Society Brief History of the Burma
Analytical Study on the Publications edited and published by the Burma [Myanmar] Research Society Ni Win Zaw Abstract The Burma Research Society (BRS) was founded on 29th. March 1910 and had a programmee to Publish, in printed book-form, important texts from Myanmar palm-leaf and parabike paper manuscripts. The BRS did most valuable work in carefully editing and publishing many old manuscripts texts. The famous Myanmar scholar Dr. Pe Maung Tin served as the BRS General Editor for its Text Program from the early 1920s to about 1940 when the Society had to cease its activities due to the Second World War. After Second World War U Wun (Min Thu Wun) and U Tin E made energetic efforts for the BRS. U Wun served asa the General Editor for the New Series. This Paper describes authors, editors, editions, printing presses, publishing dates, cover style, arrangements, physical descriptions, series numbers, appendixes, indexes, footnotes, and subjects of these books.And also it identifies the performance of editors who were prominent Myanmar and Pali scholars like Saya Lin, Saya Pwa, U Po Sein, BaganWundauk U Tin, U Lu Pe Win, U Chan Mya, U Wun, U Thein Han, and others. Moreover,abilities of ancient Myanmar authors and role of old Myanmar literature are investigated and expressed in this paper. Brief History of the Burma (Myanmar ) Research Society The Burma Research Society was founded on 29th. March 1910 at Bernard Free Library in Rangoon (Yangon) by J.S.Furnivall who was a member of the India Civil Service stationed in Myanmar together with some learned Myanmar officials like U May Oung.1After Opening the Rangoon (Yangon) University, the headquarter of the Society was located at the Rangoon University (Universities' Central Library), from about 1930-1980. -

BUDDHISM AND WRITTEN LAW: DHAMMASATTHA MANUSCRIPTS AND TEXTS IN PREMODERN BURMA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Dietrich Christian Lammerts May 2010 2010 Dietrich Christian Lammerts BUDDHISM AND WRITTEN LAW: DHAMMASATTHA MANUSCRIPTS AND TEXTS IN PREMODERN BURMA Dietrich Christian Lammerts, Ph.D. Cornell University 2010 This dissertation examines the regional and local histories of dhammasattha, the preeminent Pali, bilingual, and vernacular genre of Buddhist legal literature transmitted in premodern Burma and Southeast Asia. It provides the first critical analysis of the dating, content, form, and function of surviving dhammasattha texts based on a careful study of hitherto unexamined Burmese and Pali manuscripts. It underscores the importance for Buddhist and Southeast Asian Studies of paying careful attention to complex manuscript traditions, multilingual post- and para- canonical literatures, commentarial strategies, and the regional South-Southeast Asian literary, historical, and religious context of the development of local legal and textual practices. Part One traces the genesis of dhammasattha during the first and early second millennia C.E. through inscriptions and literary texts from India, Cambodia, Campå, Java, Lakå, and Burma and investigates its historical and legal-theoretical relationships with the Sanskrit Bråhmaˆical dharmaßåstra tradition and Pali Buddhist literature. It argues that during this period aspects of this genre of written law, akin to other disciplines such as alchemy or medicine, functioned in both Buddhist and Bråhmaˆical contexts, and that this ecumenical legal culture persisted in certain areas such as Burma and Java well into the early modern period. -

Its purpose is to demonstrate that a diachrony is not exclusively indicative of systemic internal contingencies but also a medium through which a socio-cultural situation of the past surfaces. In this sense, I will argue that both internal and external factors of a specific diachrony belong to both obverses of a same panchronic coin and that a combined analysis of both diachronic factors generates powerful explanatory models. -
Proto Northern Burmic Is Reconstructed on the Basis of Data from Achang, Bela, Lashi
1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.0 Introduction The basic purpose of this thesis is to provide a reconstruction of Proto Northern Burmic and to describe the phonological relationships between the Northern Burmic languages. This work is relevant as a thorough analysis of this language family has not yet been conducted. This analysis relies primarily on data from six Northern Burmic languages, with the additional resource of Written Burmese. In chapter 1, the background information on the languages under study and the basic approach of the thesis are described, chapter 2 gives a description of the lang-uages. The reconstruction is provided in chapter 3. A description of Proto Northern Burmic and a discussion of the phonological relationships between the Northern Burmic languages is given in chapter 4. Reconstructed vocabulary is entailed in chapter 5. This chapter provides background information for this thesis such as a description of the Northern Burmic peoples, linguistic classification, literature review, historical reconstruction methodology, a brief statement of purpose, as well as sources for the linguistic data. 1.1 Northern Burmic Historical, Cultural and Geographic Background The term Northern Burmic (Shafer 1966) is used in this thesis to refer to the grouping of Achang, Bela, Lashi, Maru, Phon, and Zaiwa. The primary data for this thesis is from speakers in the Kachin State in NE Myanmar (Burma) near the border of Yunnan, China (see section 1.7 for discussion of data). It must be stressed that this is by no means the only area in which these 2 languages are spoken as these language groups straddle the rugged mountain peaks between China and Myanmar. -

Since that time, people of Myanmar made their effort to develop and prosper Buddhism having studied Pāli, the language of Theravāda Buddhism. In Bagan period, they attempted to create Burmese scripts and writing system imitating to Pāli. From that time Myanmar Literature gradually had been developed up to present. Pyu people recorded Pāli extracts in Pyu scripts, Mon also recorded Pāli in their own scripts and Myanmar recorded Pāli in Myanmar script. In this way, people of Myanmar made their effort to develop and prosper Buddhism having studied Pāli, the language of Theravāda Buddhism. -

The paper has studied the ten male writers’ handwritings and their brief biography. The compilation of the facts and data for each individual is done chronologically. The research method used for this paper is mainly based on literature search method with a full observation. By studying this paper one can find out about the rare handwriting style, their achievements and other valuable information about the writers. Moreover, this research will help to scholars who are interested in studying in details about famous writers in Myanmar. Hopefully, it might be a part of efforts to collect and preserve the whole Myanmar writer’s handwriting which is essential in future for Myanmar writers. 1 Study on Selected Male Writers’ Handwritings Collected in The University of Yangon Library Introduction Each person has their own unique style of handwriting, whether it is everyday handwriting or their personal signature. The handwriting in a manuscript can provide considerable information about an individual manuscript, and how it relates to other manuscripts. This work is made available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 Abstract: Over the past few years, Myanmar has been at the focus of renewed scrutiny for economic, social, and political challenges faced by a complex nation-state inclusive of great diversity, both in socio-linguistic communities and religious traditions. The current conflicts between the majority (Buddhist) Burmese and the minority (Muslim) Rohingya and (Christian) Kachin are a prominent and highly visible feature of more pervasive and long-standing religious and cultural divisions. In partnership with Harvard Widener Library and Harvard humanities faculty, the author has been collecting resources across Myanmar for the past three years with the specific purpose of targeting acquisitions in minority languages, especially materials that illuminate religious texts and customary practice. These collections are meant to not only present a more dynamic religious and social narrative outside of specifically Buddhist communities and traditions (with Chin, Karen, Kachin, and Rohingya materials) but to also expand access to interpretations of the Theravada Buddhist canon beyond those in Burmese (to include Mon, Shan, Pa’O, and Rakhine). A key hope for this project is to challenge the existing dominance of Burmese voices by modeling a more balanced religious dialogue in library collections and to negotiate broader community dialogue through access. -
