Glasgow Sheriff Court, reputed to be “the busiest in Europe”, and Glasgow Central Mosque, the largest in Europe, are also located within the Sub Division's boundaries.

Crimes of violence are now lower that they have been at any time in the last five years and the police detection rate for those committing violent crime has also risen by 5.5%. The focus on those involved in serious and organised crime has taken 121 firearms off the streets, controlled drugs with an estimated street value of £3.8 million have been seized with 233 arrests being made in relation to violence between organised crime groups. This year the police have also increased levels of enforcement in respect of antisocial behaviour, such

3 Glasgow South Division Profile Oct 2009August 2010 as drinking in public, and improved focus on domestic abuse and persistent offending. Other highlights include:

• 20% reduction in acts of vandalism, a total of 1,540 less crimes; • 18.6% reduction in road crashes, resulting in 24.1% less casualties; • 1,918 positive stop/searches for controlled drugs, weapons, stolen property,

Due to the ACPOS/COPFS Protocol which requires domestic abuse offenders to be reported in custody and depending on the nature of events which are held within the Division (CF Hampden and Ibrox details later), there can be between 20% to 30% of cases reported as custodies. This represents the highest figure for custody cases in Glasgow.

The Domestic Abuse Unit, established in March 2009 for the whole of the Glasgow Area but embedded in South Division, receives reports from the three Glasgow police Divisions which serve Glasgow – A, B and G - as custody cases. The Unit currently marks the majority of domestic abuse cases reported to the office and thereafter has responsibility for the preparation and prosecution of all domestic abuse cases to their final conclusion in the Domestic Abuse Courts at Glasgow Sheriff Court. Domestic abuse cases currently account for around 25% of the custody cases reported to the Glasgow office.

Police Target to report 80% of cases within 28 days The Division’s target compliance as at end June 2009, was 86%. QD subdivision had target compliance as at end of June 2009 of 77%.

Disclosure South Division SPU is currently disclosing statements to the defence within the COPFS target (ie 4 weeks prior to the intermediate diet in bail cases and 7 days prior to the intermediate diet in custody cases) in 67% of cases where

There have been some difficulties, to varying degrees, with each of police G Division and Q subdivision submitting statements to us within their target date (ie within 21 days of the pleading diet in bail cases and within 7 days of the pleading diet in custody cases). We are however working closely with the police to improve on their compliance and are currently auditing compliance to ensure continuing improvements.

Murder Rate In 2009 there has been a decrease in the number of murders and attempted murders compared to last year. The detection rate stands at 88%. (See Deaths and High Court Division)

High Profile cases currently being worked on in ‘G’ Division Operation Beach – These cases currently being prepared by the Sheriff and Jury unit. They involved the use of undercover police officers targeting offenders selling drugs on a housing estate within the area covered by this division.

Steering Group representation has now been taken over by the Deputy Divisional Fiscal for East Division, who also leads the Area Diversity Team.
