Welcome From the Co-Chairs

Dear Colleague,

As conference co-chairs, and on behalf of the Conference Executive and Technical Programme Committees, we thank you for attending the SPE Annual Caspian Technical Conference and Exhibition (CTCE).

This year’s theme — Challenges and Changes — focuses on the current market conditions facing the oil and gas industry, both globally and on a local level. Since the inaugural event in November 2014, the global oil and gas industry has been experiencing a prolonged period of lower oil prices, which has put the spotlight on the commercial viability of all oil and gas projects around the world. The technical challenges of extracting oil and gas in the Caspian, and increasing maturity of many fields, has meant that the downturn in global oil prices has hit the region particularly hard.

The focus now is on cost efficiency, and how technical innovation can be leveraged to improve oil recovery factors, reduction in exploration costs and the identification and extraction of more complex and deeper reserves.

CTCE will provide a platform for local, regional and international experts to discuss these topics and bring you a programme made up of 3 keynote panel sessions, 12 technical sessions involving debate and 50+ research-based presentations with the intention of exchanging knowledge, best practice and experience.

With the support of a broad range of key stakeholders in the Caspian energy industry, including the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, KAZENERGY, PSA, our host KMG and the largest oil and gas players in the Caspian, including ExxonMobil, NCOC, Chevron and TCO, to name a few, the third SPE annual Caspian Technical Conference and Exhibition will provide the perfect platform to discuss topics relevant to maintaining and boosting technological advancements and developments in the region.

We hope that you take the opportunity to meet and network with old and new colleagues, discover new technologies and insights into the industry, engage in debate, and share your experiences.

Sincerely,

Magzum Mirzagaliyev, John Richard Denis, Cheryl Gomez-Smith, Ministry of Energy of the General Director Managing Director Republic of Kazakhstan SRI PDT KazMunayGas ExxonMobil Kazakhstan

SPE REGIONAL STUDENT DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT The Russia and Caspian region has an extremely active Student membership and shows great potential for membership growth. To capitalise on CTCE being in Astana and linking in with the regional focus on talent development, SPE will host 60 students from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russian chapters who will attend the SPE Regional Student Development Summit which will run from the 1 – 3 November in Astana. In previous years sessions have covered soft skills courses – such as Interview Skills, How to Write an SPE Paper and Panel Sessions. In addition to this, technical sessions will discuss the geology of the region and the issues facing the Caspian. The aim of the Regional Student Development Summit is to enable students to gain a better understanding of the Oil and Gas Industry in the Caspian region whilst being given the opportunity to network with peers, share ideas, meet with major industry figures and employers and also work together on joint technical projects. REGIONAL STUDENT DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT COMMITTEE MEMBERS SPE is thankful to the programme committee members who worked extensively in bringing this event together. Continuous innovation, from pore to pipeline. In 1927, Conrad and Marcel Schlumberger used their new electrical technique to identify formations in the Pechelbronn oil field in the Alsace region of France—a first in the oil and gas industry. Today Schlumberger continues to innovate by introducing pioneering technologies delivered with technical expertise gained from decades of experience. From reservoir characterization and drilling to production and processing, we integrate multidisciplinary products and services to optimize hydrocarbon recovery and maximize production for our customers.
