Five friends eager to become heroes in an adventure that will change the face of Europe – and that will forever change them as well. Level-headed, highly decorated officer Wilhelm is off to the eastern front with his younger brother Friedhelm, a sensitive dreamer more interested in literature than warfare. Deeply in love with Wilhelm is Charlotte, a young nurse who looks forward to serving in the Wehrmacht, also on the eastern front. While Greta is a talented singer who longs to become another Marlene Dietrich, her Jewish boyfriend Viktor still cannot convince his parents to leave Germany... Valor and courage come to the fore, but also betrayal – of values, beliefs, humanity. Friedhelm turns into a soulless killing machine... Wilhelm deserts his troops and is court-martialed... Charlotte’s Nazi ideology crumbles when she betrays a Jewish nurse helping the German army... Greta obtains papers for Viktor’s escape by selling herself to an SS colonel. They and millions of others wanted to be heroes; but none of them could imagine what the war would ultimately do to them and to the rest of the world... „The ZDF three-parter marks a new era in German television.“ (Der Spiegel) Title Generation War Genre Drama Category Miniseries Format 6 x one hour / 3 x two hours Directed by Philipp Kadelbach Written by Stefan Kolditz Starring Volker Bruch Tom Schilling Katharina Schüttler Ludwig Trepte Miriam Stein Produced by a co-production of TeamWorx and ZDF in co-operation with Beta Film and ZDF Enterprises www.betafilm.com/generationwar One century, two families, four generations HOTEL ADLON – A FAMILY SAGA scored record ratings with over 25.5 million viewers over three evenings It’s where commerce and politics meet money and glamour, and where sin can count on discretion – the Hotel Adlon in Berlin, one of the grandest of the world’s grand hotels. It begins with the birth of Sonja, whose life will be inextricably bound up with the Adlon’s fate. The tragedies to come are heralded by the dark secret surrounding Sonja’s origins. Financial problems soon plague the hotel, and the Kaiser ends his patronage after abdicating. Louis Adlon and his father Lorenz continue to prize their independence, and Louis’ new wife Hedda proves to have an uncanny business sense, organizing spectacular balls and other lucrative events in the Roaring Twenties. It is in the lobby of the hotel that has become her home that Sonja meets Julian, a Jewish musician, and falls in love with him. But it is now the late 1930s, and Julian must flee, with their little daughter. His smart but threadbare uniform cannot hide the fact that times are rough and that he basically earns his living from telling tall tales. At a country inn, he meets an earnest little girl, Frieda, a circus-artist child from St. Petersburg who claims that he is her father. Try as he may, Münchhausen simply cannot convince her that she’s wrong. But as a gesture of good will, he – along with another new acquaintance, the lovely Countess Constanze von Hellberg – will bring her back to her mother in Russia. Along the way, they are caught by pirates, land on the moon, cross a desert and the freezing taiga – and ultimately arrive in Petersburg, at the court of Münchhausen’s one-time lover, Czarina Catherine the Great. Jealous of the little girl at the Baron’s side, Catherine has the girl abducted and sold to the Great Sultan, a feared potentate and Münchhausen’s greatest enemy. But the Baron has come to care deeply about little Frieda, and is ready to use all his cunning and talents to outfox the Sultan and rescue Frieda. Based on the true story of the 1954 conquest of K2 “It’s about ambition, passion and the price of success” (Robert Dornhelm, “War and Peace”) It had been beckoning for centuries: the world’s second-tallest mountain, known under different names, but feared and revered universally as K2. Despite several attempts to conquer it, the white giant had repulsed every attempt by even the most skilled and experienced climbers. Would 1954 be the year of its conquest? In Milan, the ambitious Prof. Desio is quietly putting together a team of Alpinists, the best he can find. The training is grueling and brings several aspirants to their physical and mental limits. But all want to go on; all want to make it to the top. Especially the extremely fit and sure- footed young Bonatti. Finally, twelve are chosen. As the men travel half-way across the globe and begin their daredevil ascent, personalities clash, jealousy and mistrust begin to seep through what should be a tight-knit fabric. Yet team spirit ultimately wins out, with each climber showing remarkable determination and willpower as they brave storms, avalanches, altitude sickness and violent personal conflicts. Ultimately, however, and to Bonatti’s bitter disappointment, only two men chosen by Desio – Compagnoni and Lacedelli – are allowed to make it to the “death zone” – and reach the top. You might say the town itself is her courtroom – for not only does she convey respect and natural authority but genuine interest and compassion for her fellow townspeople. Her cases run the gamut of small-town crime and civil disputes, many of which need to be handled with as much brains as common sense, as much candidness as tact. But it’s not only Olivia’s court style that intrigues handsome journalist Jack Griffith, it’s Olivia’s human touch. As editor-in-chief - and sole employee – of the “Cedar Cove Chronicle”, he has a finger on the people’s pulse, a pulse that sometimes beats faster, and sometimes slower, than the law..
