In particular, it is aimed at science students taking a phil- osophy of science course but no other philosophy classes, as well as at those students who are studying philosophy of science as part of a philosophy degree. Hence, I have assumed no prior knowledge of philosophy, and I have not relied upon detailed knowledge of science either. I have also avoided using any mathematics. This means that some issues are not discussed despite their interest. For example, the implications of quantum mechanics for philosophy of science, and the mathematical theory of probability and its use in modelling scien- tific reasoning are not dealt with here. Nonetheless, an introductory text need not be superficial and I have tried to offer an analysis of various issues, such as induction, underdetermination and scientific realism from which even graduate students and professional philo- sophers may benefit. My aim throughout has been to make the reader aware of questions about which they may never have thought, and then to lead them through a philosophical investigation of them in order that they appreciate the strength of arguments on all sides, rather than to offer my own views. Hence, there are few answers to be found in what follows and if my readers are left puzzled where previously they were comfortable then I will be satisfied. I hope this book will also interest scientists and general readers who are curious about the philosophy of science. I have tried to keep the exposition clear and accessible throughout, and also to illustrate important lines of argument with everyday and scientific examples. However, the reader will find that the discussion in Chapter 5 is xi PREFACE largely about the historical and philosophical background to the con- temporary debate about scientific realism. Those who do not see its relevance immediately are urged to persevere, since the issues dis- cussed are of fundamental importance. Finally, I must confess in advance to historians that I have subordinated historiography to my pedagogical aims by sometimes presenting a narrative that only just begins to address the complexities and ambiguities of the historical development of philosophy and science. James Ladyman xiii Introduction In many ways, our age is no different from any other: most people work hard merely to survive, while a few live in the lap of luxury; many perish in wars and conflicts, the causes of which they have no control over; the cycle of birth, reproduction and death is funda- mentally the same for us as it was for our distant ancestors. Yet certain features of the contemporary world are quite new: for example, I can pick up the phone and speak to a relative on the other side of the globe, and I can see that it is indeed a globe that I inhabit by looking at a photograph taken from space; many people’s every- day lives are enhanced by, and unimaginable without, computers, televisions and music systems; medicine can treat forms of illness and injury that would have brought certain death for earlier generations.

Maxwell launched a ferocious attack on B.C. van Fraassen's view of science called Con- structive Empiricism (CE). This attack has been totally ignored. Must we con- clude from this silence that no defence is possible against the attack and that a fortiori Maxwell has buried CE once and for all, or is the attack too obviously flawed as not to merit exposure? We believe that neither is the case and hope that a careful dissection of Maxwell's reasoning will make this clear. This dis- section includes an analysis of Maxwell's `aberrance-argument' (omnipresent in his many writings) for the contentious claim that science implicitly and per- manently accepts a substantial, metaphysical thesis about the universe. This claim generally has been ignored too, for more than a quarter of a century. Our con- clusions will be that, first, Maxwell's attacks on CE can be beaten off; secondly, his `aberrance-arguments' do not establish what Maxwell believes they estab- lish; but, thirdly, we can draw a number of valuable lessons from these attacks about the nature of science and of the libertarian nature of CE. I explore the possibility of enumerating the space of plausible grand theories of the universe by using the explanatory properties of possible views to limit the number of plausible theories. I motivate this alternative grounding by showing that Swinburne’s appeal to simplicity is problematic along several dimensions. I then argue that there are three plausible grand views—theism, atheism, and axiarchism—which satisfy explanatory requirements for plau- sibility. Other possible views lack the explanatory virtue of these three theo- ries. Consequently, this explanatory grounding provides a way of securing a nontrivial prior probability for theism, atheism, and axiarchism.

Pennock Philosophy Department The University of Texas at Austin Abstract Goodman's Grue Paradox may be intransigent as a version of the problem of induction, but may be resolved within the more lim ited context of confirmation theory in which the task is to explicate the basic notion of evidential relevance. Although the green and grue hypotheses are equivalently confirmed if we follow Goodman's use of the Hempelian instance confirmation relation, there are asym metries than can be exploited if we adopt an "ontic" confirmation theory that uses a causal notion of evidential relevance. I sort out a variety of interpretive confusions about the intended content of the definition of grue and show how the causal approach resolves each in a way that is not paradoxical. 1. Introduction If we are to make progress in confirmation theory, we must distinguish local problems having to do with the nature of evidence from the global problem of induction. Nelson Goodman posed the Grue Paradox as "The New Riddle of In- duction," but his presentation set up the problem within a Hempelian model of confirmation. In what follows I do not address the aspect of the paradox that participates in the old problem of induction but focus upon the aspect that deals with the explication of the confirmation relation, that is, the relation having to do with what counts as evidence of what.     LIVING IN DOUBT: CARNEADES’ PITHANON RECONSIDERED SUZANNE OBDRZALEK I though the interpretation of ancient texts is inevitably di¶cult, Carneades presents what one might call a worst-case scenario. In the first place, he wrote nothing. To complicate matters, Carneades’ views were so obscure that his faithful disciple Clitomachus con- fessed that he could never figure out what Carneades actually be- lieved (Cic. Acad. 2. 139). Showing remarkable fortitude in the face of such an obstacle, Clitomachus, attempting to play Plato to Carneades’ Socrates, reportedly recorded Carneades’ teachings in 400 books (D.L. 4. 67). Not one remains. None the less, Clito- machus’ attempt to make a philosophy of Carneades’ anti-theoreti- cal stance was not a complete failure; Carneades had a tremendous influence on the later Academy as well as the Stoa, and his views (or lack thereof) have been handed down to us by both Sextus Em- piricus and Cicero. These sources are, however, problematic. As a Pyrrhonist, Sextus was critical of the Academy and may have ex- aggerated what he took to be Carneades’ dogmatism. Cicero, on the other hand, a student of Philo, was undoubtedly influenced in his interpretation of Carneades by his teacher’s dogmatic scepti- cism. Carneades is perhaps best known for proposing the pithan»e phantasia (probable impression) as a criterion for life. However, the status of his theory of the pithanon (probable) is completely unclear.1 Was it merely a dialectical move against the Stoic charge of apraxia (inaction)?     Holism and Compositionality Francis Jeffry Pelletier 1 Introduction A brief acquaintance with the web shows that the terms ‘holism’1 and ‘compositionality’ are used in many different fields, both academic and non-academic. And given any two academic fields, it is usually not obvious that the terms mean the same to the practitioners. Even just within philosophy and linguistics it seems that rather different conceptions are in play when we read any two different authors. We start, therefore, with a brief survey of some of the senses in which these terms are used. A little later we will make some more careful remarks about the notions. 1.1 Two Kinds of Compositionality A recent interdisciplinary conference revealed that there are (at least) two different things that are thought of when the issue of compositionality is considered. One concerns a (generalized) notion of “what is a complex item (of my theory) made of?” Here are a few places where this notion arose: Prototypes: Current prototype theory says that a prototype is a structure that has a number of attribute-value pairs. Bradley’s Philosophy of Experience Against William James’ Criticisms By: Kyle Barbour Thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Philosophy Department of Philosophy Memorial University August 2019 St. John’s, Newfoundland Page | 1 Abstract This thesis addresses the debate between two of the most important philosophers at the turn of the 20th century: F.H. Bradley and William James. Their debate centered around the priority that each philosopher assigned to experience in terms of a starting point for metaphysical inquiry and the subsequent understanding of logical relations which each philosopher developed based upon their conception of experience. This thesis will consider James’ “radical empiricism” as a response and critique of Bradley’s philosophy. As such, through an investigation of each philosopher, this thesis will argue that James’ critique of Bradley is flawed due to his misreading of Bradley’s philosophy and will conclude that Bradley’s philosophy holds the potential to answer the difficulties found within James’ radical empiricism and, though it contains undeniable flaws of its own, holds within it the seeds for future philosophical development that exceeds Bradley and James’ debate.
