Dicranales Dicranum scoparium Broom Fork-moss Key 129, 135, 139 5 mm 5 mm 1 cm Identification A medium- to large-sized plant (up to 10 cm), growing in yellow-green to dark green cushions or large patches. The leaves are 4–7.5 mm long, narrowly spearhead-shaped and taper to a long fine tip composed largely of the strong nerve. They are often somewhat curved, but can also be straight and are hardly altered when dry. The leaf margins are usually strongly toothed near the tip. The back of the nerve has raised lines of cells which are just visible with a hand lens. These are also toothed, making the tip of the leaf appear toothed all round. D. scoparium occasionally produces deciduous shoots with smaller leaves at the tip of the stems. The curved, cylindrical capsule is common in the north and west of Britain, and is borne on a long seta that is yellow above and reddish below. Similar species D. scoparium is quite variable and confusion is most likely with D. majus (p. 379) and D. fuscescens (p. 382). D. majus is a larger plant with longer, regular, strongly curved leaves showing little variation; if in doubt, your plant is almost certainly D. scoparium. D. fuscescens is similar in size to D. scoparium, but has a finer leaf tip with smaller teeth on the margins and lacks raised lines of cells on the back of the leaves. The leaves in D. fuscescens are crisped when dry, and in this state mixed stands of D. scoparium and D. -

ADVAITA, CALEB A. MORSE1,2 AND DOUGLAS LADD3 ABSTRACT. – A total of 154 lichens, four lichenicolous fungi, and one allied fungus were collected by the authors from 2004 to 2015 from Pipestone National Monument (PNM), in Pipestone County, on the Prairie Coteau of southwestern Minnesota. Twelve additional species collected by previous researchers, but not found by the authors, bring the total number of taxa known for PNM to 171. This represents a substantial increase over previous reports for PNM, likely due to increased intensity of field work, and also to the marked expansion of corticolous and anthropogenic substrates since the site was first surveyed in 1899. Reexamination of 116 vouchers deposited in MIN and the PNM herbarium led to the exclusion of 48 species previously reported from the site. Crustose lichens are the most common growth form, comprising 65% of the lichen diversity. Sioux Quartzite provided substrate for 43% of the lichen taxa collected. Saxicolous lichen communities were characterized by sampling four transects on cliff faces and low outcrops. An annotated checklist of the lichens of the site is provided, as well as a list of excluded taxa. We report 24 species (including 22 lichens and two lichenicolous fungi) new for Minnesota: Acarospora boulderensis, A. contigua, A. erythrophora, A. strigata, Agonimia opuntiella, Arthonia clemens, A. muscigena, Aspicilia americana, Bacidina delicata, Buellia tyrolensis, Caloplaca flavocitrina, C. lobulata, C. -

A total of 63 taxa belonging to Bryophyta (22 families 37 genera 44 species), Marchantiophyta (7 families 11 genera 18 species), and Antho- cerotophyta (1 family 1 genus 1 species) were determined, and the liverwort index was 30.2%. The predominant life form was the mat form. The rates of bryophytes dominating in mesic to hygric sites were higher than the bryophytes mainly observed in xeric habitats. These values indicate that such forests are widespread in this study area. Moreover, the rock was the substrate type, which plays a major role in providing micro-habitats for bryophytes. We suggest that more detailed studies of the bryophyte flora should be conducted on a regional scale to provide basic data for selecting indicator species of Gotjawal and evergreen broad-leaved forests on Jejudo Island. Dicranum scoparium and Porella platyphylla taxa of bryophytes were used in the present study carried out to determine the free radical scavenging activities, fatty acid, and vitamin contents. In this study, it was aimed to underline the importance of bryophytes for scientific literature and to provide a basis for further studies on this subject. The data obtained in this study indicate that the DPPH radical scavenging effect of D. scoparium taxon is significantly higher than that of P. platyphylla taxon. It is known that there is a strong relationship between the phenolic compound content of methanol extracts of the plants and the DPPH radical scavenging efficiency. When the fatty acid contents were examined, it was observed that levels of all unsaturated fatty acids were higher in the P. platyphylla taxon than the D. scoparium taxon, except for α-Linolenic acid. When the vitamin contents of species were compared, it was determined that D-3, α -tocopherol, stigmasterol, betasterol amount was higher in Dicranum taxon. The study includes a representative fraction (presumably about 80%) of the known species diversity of the Umbilicariaceae s.str. and is based on the phylograms obtained using maximum likelihood and a Bayesian phylogenetic inference framework. The analyses resulted in the recognition of eight well-supported clades, delimited by a combination of morphological and chemical features. None of the previous classifications within Umbilicariaceae s.str. were supported by the phylogenetic analyses. The distribution of the diagnostic morphological and chemical traits against the molecular phylogenetic topology revealed the following patterns of evolution: (1) Rhizinomorphs were gained at least four times independently and are lacking in most clades grouping in the proximity of Lasallia. (2) Asexual reproductive structures, i.e., thalloconidia and lichenized dispersal units, appear more or less mutually exclusive, being restricted to different clades. -
A Checklist of Lichens Collected During the First Howard Crum Bryological Workshop, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

HARRIS1 & JAMES C. LENDEMER2 ABSTRACT. – A checklist of 209 species of lichens and lichenicolous fungi collected during the First Howard Crum Bryological Workshop in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Pennsylvania, USA is provided. The new species Opegrapha bicolor R.C. Harris & Lendemer, collected during the Foray, is described. Chrysothrix flavovirens Tønsberg and Merismatium peregrinum (Flotow) Triebel are reported as new to North America. On April 23-26, 2004, we were graciously allowed to be commensals during the First Howard Crum Bryological Workshop in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Pennsylvania, USA. Given the dearth of knowledge of lichen distributions in Pennsylvania and the overall lack of recent vouchers, this was a valuable opportunity to collect in what turned out to be a rich and interesting area. We were quite surprised by the apparent high lichen diversity, as well as the number of novelties and rarities, in an area so close to the East Coast megalopolis. In four half-days in the field, we collected 209 species in a limited area of the Pennsylvania part of the Park. Some are clearly new to science of which, Opegrapha bicolor is described here (see Endnote). Two presumably undescribed species of Fellhanera will be published elsewhere, and the Halecania will be included in a forthcoming treatment of Ozark lichens. Others are left for the future, as present material (and our knowledge) are inadequate. -

Box 9514, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands Abstract Neckera praetermissa Enroth & Touw spec. nov. (Neckeraceae) is described from northern Vietnam. It is morphologically closest to the SE Asian N. undulatifolia (Tix.) Enroth, with which it shares the similar, ovate-ligulate and symmetric leaves with coarsely dentate apices, and strongly incrassate and porose leaf cell walls. However, N. undulatifolia has the stems up to 10 cm long and a distinct costa reaching to 5/6 of leaf length, while the stems of N. praetermissa are to c. 3 cm long and the leaves are ecostate or with a weak costa reaching to 1/6 of leaf length at most. Key words: Taxonomy, Pleurocarpous mosses, New species, Tropics Introduction Based on genomic data, the systematics of the pleurocarpous moss family Neckeraceae has in the recent years undergone profound changes, reviewed by Enroth (2013). Olsson et al. (2009) showed that the family is divided into three well-supported clades that the authors called Neckera-clade, Thamnobryum-clade and Pinnatella-clade. At the genus level, several of the “traditional” genera, such as Porotrichum (Brid.) Hampe (1863: 154), Thamnobryum Nieuwland (1917: 50), Homalia Bridel (1827: xlvi, 325, 763, 807, 812), Pinnatella Fleischer (1906: 79), Neckera Hedwig (1801: 200–210) and Forsstroemia Lindberg (1863: 605) were shown to be poly- or paraphyletic, and as a result several new genera were erected (e.g. -

Yet, comparatively less is known about how lichens–obligate symbiotic organisms–respond to disturbance. Successful establishment and development of lichens require a minimum of two compatible yet usually unrelated species to be present in an environment, suggesting disturbance might be particularly detrimental. To address this gap, we focused on lichens, which are obligate symbiotic organ- isms that function as hubs of trophic interactions. Our investigation was conducted in the southern Appalachian Mountains, USA. We conducted complete biodiversity inventories of lichens (all growth forms, reproductive modes, substrates) across 47, 1-ha plots to test classic models of responses to disturbance (e.g., linear, unimodal). Disturbance was quantifed in each plot using a standardized suite of habitat quality variables. We additionally quantifed woody plant diversity, forest density, rock density, as well as environmental factors (elevation, temperature, precipitation, net primary productivity, slope, aspect) and analyzed their impacts on lichen biodiversity. Our analyses recovered a strong, positive, linear relationship between lichen biodiversity and habitat quality: lower levels of disturbance correlate to higher species diversity. With few exceptions, additional variables failed to signifcantly explain variation in diversity among plots for the 509 total lichen species, but we caution that total variation in some of these variables was limited in our study area. -

ROSALIA Handbooks ROSALIA Handbooks Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control Second, revised and expanded edition Invasive plant species pose major agricultural, silvicultural, human health and ecological problems worldwide, and are considered the most signifi cant threat for nature conservation. Species invading natural areas in Hungary have been described by a number of books published in the Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control last few years. A great amount of experience has been gathered about the control of these species in some areas, which we can read about in an increasing number of articles; however, no book has been published with regards to the whole country. Invasions affecting larger areas require high energy and cost input, and the effectiveness and successfulness of control can be infl uenced by a number of factors. The development of effective, widely applicable control and eradication technologies is preceded by experiments and examinations which are based on a lot of practical experience and often loaded with negative experiences. National park directorates, forest and agricultural managers and NGOs in many parts of Hungary are combatting the spread of invasive species; however, the exchange of information and conclusion of experiences among the managing bodies is indispensable. The aim of the present volume is to facilitate this by summarizing experiences and the methods applied in practice; which, we hope, will enable us to successfully stop the further spread of invasive plant species and effectively protect our natural values.
