THE REPUBLICAN SOLDIER: HISTORIOGRAPHICAL REPRESENTATIONS AND HUMAN REALITIES Abstract My dissertation addresses two related questions about the soldier of the Roman Republic: how writers who treated the Republic interpreted the figure of the soldier, and what that soldier’s real experience was like. The dissertation shows how the soldier figure was wound into the overall objectives of the writers Polybius, Livy, and Sallust, who made the figure of the Roman soldier essential to their conceptions of Roman national character, and used the soldier to demonstrate their perceptions of the ascension, stability, and then decline of Roman society. I conclude that the soldier figure has a privileged role to play in Roman self-identity and representation. I then address how we can access the soldier’s real experience, and use the Bellum Hispaniense, the work of a low ranking soldier, to demonstrate that the soldier’s major concern is for information. Success in warfare and the cohesion of an army depend on the soldier’s mentality, rather than his physical body. I explore this by creating a methodology for interdisciplinary research involving modern history and psychology. I argue that unusual or seemingly incongruous incidents, instead of being labeled as romantic or legendary discourse, can be usefully reframed in terms of the study of human behavior. I show similarities between recorded behaviors of Roman soldiers and documented cases of modern soldiers who have developed dependency on their leaders. I also address the Roman army more broadly, and argue that the rules and regulations in the Roman army bear strong resemblances to those employed in the German Wehrmacht and the Iraqi army to encourage “victory or death” style soldiering. I conclude that this historiographical trope was deliberately enforced using psychologically manipulative methods. General Introduction This dissertation is a project of intellectual history, which investigates popular thought and perceptions about the soldier figure during the Republic and sets them in dialogue with accounts of real human experiences in war. It is about thought, mentality, and psychology. It should be noted that the ideas about the soldier with which this dissertation is concerned are naturally not the only ones in evidence during the Republican period. I have therefore chosen to examine those authors and accounts which help to define the soldier’s relationship to the rest of society. This central theme operates on a number of different levels. I deal with semi-mythological stories and etiological legends, which allow us access to broad themes about what the Roman soldier means to the Roman nation. These stories indicate that the Roman people attached great significance to the figure of the soldier and related him to larger concepts about Rome’s place in the world. I also examine the authorial treatment of themes about the soldier. The soldier figure is integral to Roman life and to Roman self-perception, and so he plays a large role in the world view of historians of Rome. For Polybius he is behind her success, for Sallust a measurement of her decline, and in both authors, vital to perceptions about the health of the state. When considered together, all the authors treated in this dissertation contribute parts of a larger picture which helps to frame the soldier’s relationship to the 2 rest of society. The soldier is the means by which the citizen makes his contribution to society, and the figure of the soldier as a conqueror of others is linked to Rome’s success as a nation. In Livy, if one ceases to perform the duties of a soldier, one ceases to be perceived as a soldier in the eyes of the rest of Rome, and as a result the offender suffers social marginalization and exclusion. The Romans cast out groups of men who have ceased the pursuit of soldiering. Sallust sees the same vision on a larger

Chapter one provides background material on the literary and legal source material used in this study and considers the cases of Augustus’ daughter and granddaughter as a backdrop to the legal and political thinking that follows. The remainder of the dissertation is divided according to women’s roles in criminal trials. Chapter two, encompassing the largest body of evidence, addresses the role of women as defendants, and this chapter is split into three thematic parts that concentrate on charges of adultery, treason, and other crimes. A recurring question is whether the defendants were indicted for reasons specific to them or the indictments were meant to injure their male family members politically. Analysis of these cases reveals that most of the accused women suffered harm without the damage being shared by their male family members. Chapter three considers that a handful of powerful women also filled the role of prosecutor, a role technically denied to them under the law. Resourceful and powerful imperial women like Messalina and Agrippina found ways to use criminal accusations to remove political enemies. Chapter four investigates women in the role of witnesses in criminal trials.

Josephus As Political Philosopher: His Concept Of Kingship Abstract Scholars who have discussed Josephus’ political philosophy have largely focused on his concepts of aristokratia or theokratia. In general, they have ignored his concept of kingship. Those that have commented on it tend to dismiss Josephus as anti-monarchical and ascribe this to the biblical anti- monarchical tradition. To date, Josephus’ concept of kingship has not been treated as a significant component of his political philosophy. Through a close reading of Josephus’ longest text, the Jewish Antiquities, a historical work that provides extensive accounts of kings and kingship, I show that Josephus had a fully developed theory of monarchical government that drew on biblical and Greco- Roman models of kingship. Josephus held that ideal kingship was the responsible use of the personal power of one individual to advance the interests of the governed and maintain his and his subjects’ loyalty to Yahweh. The king relied primarily on a standard array of classical virtues to preserve social order in the kingdom, protect it from external threats, maintain his subjects’ quality of life, and provide them with a model for proper moral conduct.

To repress the war torts, as well as to overcome the soldiers’ resistance, which at moments was violent, the king (rex) himself at first and the highest new established magistrates i.e. consuls (consules) afterwards, have been using various constrained acts. The authority of such enforcement against Roman soldiers sprang from their “military imperium” (imperium militiae). As most important criminal and judicial organs in conditions of war, responsible for maintenance of the military courtesy, were introduced the military commander (dux) and the array and their subsidiary organs were the cavalry commander, military legates, military tribunals, centurions and regents.     Female Property Ownership and Status in Classical and Hellenistic Sparta Stephen Hodkinson University of Manchester 1. Introduction The image of the liberated Spartiate woman, exempt from (at least some of) the social and behavioral controls which circumscribed the lives of her counterparts in other Greek poleis, has excited or horrified the imagination of commentators both ancient and modern.1 This image of liberation has sometimes carried with it the idea that women in Sparta exercised an unaccustomed influence over both domestic and political affairs.2 The source of that influence is ascribed by certain ancient writers, such as Euripides (Andromache 147-53, 211) and Aristotle (Politics 1269b12-1270a34), to female control over significant amounts of property. The male-centered perspectives of ancient writers, along with the well-known phenomenon of the “Spartan mirage” (the compound of distorted reality and sheer imaginative fiction regarding the character of Spartan society which is reflected in our overwhelmingly non-Spartan sources) mean that we must treat ancient images of women with caution. Nevertheless, ancient perceptions of their position as significant holders of property have been affirmed in recent modern studies.3 The issue at the heart of my paper is to what extent female property-holding really did translate into enhanced status and influence. In Sections 2-4 of this paper I shall approach this question from three main angles. What was the status of female possession of property, and what power did women have directly to manage and make use of their property? What impact did actual or potential ownership of property by Spartiate women have upon their status and influence? And what role did female property-ownership and status, as a collective phenomenon, play within the crisis of Spartiate society? First, however, in view of the inter-disciplinary audience of this volume, it is necessary to a give a brief outline of the historical context of my discussion.

Fyfe The Huns are one of the most misunderstood and mythologized barbarian invaders encountered by the Roman Empire. They were described by their contemporaries as savage nomadic warriors with superior archery skills, and it is this image that has been written into the history of the fall of the Western Roman Empire and influenced studies of Late Antiquity through countless generations of scholarship. This study examines evidence of Hunnic archery, questions the acceptance and significance of the “Hunnic archer” image, and situates Hunnic archery within the context of the fall of the Western Roman Empire. To achieve a more accurate picture of the importance of archery in Hunnic warfare and society, this study undertakes a mortuary analysis of burial sites associated with the Huns in Europe, a tactical and logistical study of mounted archery and Late Roman and Hunnic military engagements, and an analysis of the primary and secondary literature. Note: This text begins by recounting the Polybian typology of constitutional forms. Bodin then asserts, consistent with the model of Anacyclosis, that political society on the national scale begins in monarchy and degenerates into tyranny. Bodin then challenges the remainder of the validity of the Anacyclosis model. This excerpt is presented to illustrate this very important point: in discounting the Polybian Anacyclosis, Bodin (likely in reliance on Aristotle) made the same mistake that F. W. Walbank (the greatest historian of Polybius) made in the 20th century A.D., who also relied on Aristotle to challenge the validity of Anacyclosis as a model of political evolution; Bodin did not raise the unit of analysis from the level of a city-state or nation-state to that of a world-state as Polybius had done when he first described Anacyclosis in view of the emerging Roman Empire in the second half of the 2nd century B.C. Polybius lived to see the first truly economically, legally, linguistically, and culturally integrated political entity of global scale in recorded history – the first “closed political system” in the Machiavellian sense. Aristotle’s and Plato’s units of analyses, by contrast, were mere city-states or confederations existing within a sea of rivals and threats; but Aristotle and Plato lived roughly two centuries before Polybius. From the standpoint of evolutionary modeling, Polybius has an authority that Aristotle and Plato cannot match because he had a superior historical vantage point vis-à-vis Rome, which by the time of Polybius had nearly completed the conquest and integration of the Mediterranean basin and eradicated all serious rivals.

A. M. Eckstein N THE SUMMER of 19 5 a. c. T. Quinctius Flamininus and the Greek I allies of Rome went to war against N abis of Sparta. The official cause of the war was Nabis' continued occupation of Argos, the great city of the northeastern Peloponnese. 1 A strong case can be made that the liberation of Argos was indeed the crucial and sincere goal of the war,2 although the reasons for demanding Nabis' with­ drawal from Argos may have been somewhat more complex.3 Nabis was soon blockaded in Sparta itself and decided to open negotiations for peace. Livy 34.3lfprovides us with a detailed account of the sub­ sequent encounter between N abis and Flamininus in the form of a debate over the justice of the war, characterized by contradictory assertions about the history of Sparta's relations with Rome and the recent history of Argos.     INTEGRATION OR DISINTEGRATION? THE ROMAN ARMY IN THE THIRD CENTURY A.D. Lukas de Blois My issue in this paper is: what was the main trend within the Roman military forces in the third century ad? Integration, or disintegration into regional entities? This paper is not about cultural integration of ethnic groups in multicultural parts of the Roman Empire, such as the city of Rome, thriving commercial centres, and border regions to which the armies had brought people from various parts of the Empire, and where multicultural military personnel lived together with indigenous groups, craftsmen from different origins, and immigrants from commercially active regions, either in canabae adjacent to castra stativa, or in garrison towns, as in the Eastern parts of the Empire. In variatio upon an issue raised by Frederick Naerebout in another paper published in this volume, I might ask myself in what sense an army, which in the third century ad was progressively composed of ethnically and culturally different units, kept functioning as an integrated entity, or in actual practice disintegrated into rivalling, particularistic regional forces whose actual or potential competition for money and supplies con- stantly threatened peace and stability in the Empire, particularly in times of dangerous external wars, when the need for supplies increased. The discussion should start with Septimius Severus. After his victories over Pescennius Niger, some tribes in northern Mesopotamia, and Albinus in Gaul, Severus had to replenish the ranks of his armies, for example at the Danube frontiers, which had yielded many men to Severus’ field armies and his new praetorian guard.
