William Bruce Dendy, Canadian architectural historian, was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1948 and died May 29, 1993 in Toronto, Ontario. Dendy graduated from the University of Toronto in 1971, received a B.A. in Architectural History from Cambridge University in 1973, and in 1979 received two Masters degrees in architectural history, one from the University of Cambridge, and one from Columbia University in New York. He worked as an architectural historian for the Toronto Historical Board from 1973 until 1976, taught Canadian architectural history at the University of Toronto, at the University of Waterloo, at Carleton University in Ottawa, at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute in Toronto, and at the Toronto Urban Studies Centre. Dendy also worked on a consultancy basis as architectural historian to many Toronto-based architectural firms, developers, and government agencies, and also led architectural walking tours of Toronto. Dendy's two published works, _Lost Toronto_ (1978) and _Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons, and History_ (1986), were both published by the Oxford University Press and both won Toronto Book Awards. In 1993 Dendy was awarded an honorary membership in the Ontario Association of Architects, and in the same year he was given an Allied Arts Award for his lectures and books on historical architecture. The fonds consists of materials documenting William Dendy's life and career as an architectural historian. This includes university course notes, research material for published works, research material on the history of Canadian architecture and other research interests such as Forest Hill, Hamilton, the architects Frank Darling and William Somerville, and the Massey family. Some materials relate to Dendy's teaching activities, Toronto walking tours and consultancy projects. Includes articles, card files, clippings, correspondence, electronic records, ephemera, manuscripts, maps, ms. and ts. notes. Includes photographs, negatives, and approximately 40,000 slides (including more than 17,000 images of Canadian architecture, urban space, and landscape). These slides were taken by Dendy and are each individually identified by him. Arranged in eleven series: 1. Biographical; 2. Personal and Professional; 3. Works by; 4. Research and Writing; 5. Series 1 : Biographical About Dendy. - [196-?], [197-?], 1976-1991.. - ca. 7 cm of textual records and graphic material. Series consists of materials relating to Dendy's university education and his career as an architectural historian. These materials include the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree certificates received by Dendy in the 1970's from the University of Cambridge where he studied Architectural History as well as clippings, ephemera and portraits. File 1 Clippings. - 1986-1991. Contents: includes originals and photocopies of an article about Dendy by Adele Freedman which appeared in _The Globe and Mail_ on Sept. 14, 1991. Additionally includes photocopy of a clipping (1988?) which appeared in _The Toronto Star_ which focused on Dendy's career as an architectural historian. This file also includes a photocopy of a review of _Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons, and History_ by Dendy and Kilbourn. This appeared in _Books in Canada_ in May 1987. Invitations to the launching event for this publication from Oxford University Press in association with Ballenford Books are also among the items included in this file. Finally this file includes a folded flyer listing the winners of the City of Toronto Book Awards in the period 1974-1991._Lost Toronto_ received this award in 1979, while _Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons and History_ received this award in 1987.The program produced for the City of Toronto's Civic Honours Day 1979 is also included in this file. Page 2 File 2 Portrait photographs. - [196-?], 1976, 1981.. Contents: includes one photocopy of b&w protrait photograph of Dendy as a very young man. A second b&w portrait photograph of Dendy was taken by Hodgskiss Studios in Apr. 1976. The third b&w portrait photograph of Dendy appears in his passport, which was issued in 1981, and is also among the items included in this file. File 3 University : as student and teacher. - [197-?], 1976-1979. Contents: includes degree certificates awarded to Dendy including a Degree of Bachelor of Arts (1976) and a Master of Arts (1979) from St. John's College in the University of Cambridge. Additionally, includes a photograph which shows Dendy receiving a degree or an award at unidenfitied ceremony or event. Another photograph appears to depict students and staff in the school of architecture at Massey College, University of Toronto (1979-1980). Dendy was one of the staff members in this year and he is among the individuals in this photograph. All members in this photograph are identified in an accompanying list. Finally, this file contains a photograph depicting a group of people who Dendy may have worked or studied with. The occasion on which this photograph was taken and the individuals in this photograph are, however, not identified. Series 2 : Personal and Professional Correspondence. - 1977-1991. - ca. 5 cm of textual records. Series consists of correspondence received by Dendy over the period 1977-1991. Also includes some supporting documents in the form of clippings, photographs, and other items. The correspondence contained in this series is divided into two separate files. One file contains correspondence relating to Dendy's professional career. This includes correspondence re his teaching of architectural history at various Canadian universities and other third level educational institutions. Talks and presentations given by Dendy at universities, public libraries, at the Toronto Historical Board and at other venues also form the subject of some of this correspondence. Much of this correspondence was received from Oxford University Press Canada re _Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, History, and Patrons_. Some other correspondence relates to a proposed publication by Dendy on the history of Canadian architecture. Other topics covered by this correspondence include: walking tours led by Dendy; a proposed exhibition by Dendy relating to the architecture of Forest Hill; Dendy's activities as a member of various architectural societies and committees; awards received by Dendy during his lifetime including a scholarship for his doctoral studies at Columbia University, New York, and his receipt of an Award of Merit from the Toronto Historical Board for _Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons, and History_. Correspondence contained in the second file in this series is of a personal nature and includes letters and cards from Dendy's parents, other family members, and friends. File 4 City Park Co-operative Apartments Inc. - 1989-1992. Contents: includes correspondence received by Dendy from City Park Co-operative Apartments Inc. where Mr. Dendy was a resident. This correspondence relates to general members' meetings, to rent charges, as well as to other matters. Untitled folder. Research binder. File 5a Consulting. - 1989-1991. Contents: contains miscellaneous materials relating to work which Dendy carried out on a consultancy basis in his capacity as an architectural historian. Titled and untitled file folders relating to different consultancy projects in which Dendy participated are contained in this file. Other materials contained in this file include correspondence relating to Dendy's studies at Columbia University in New York, as well as correspondence relating to the planned reprint of the book _Lost Toronto_ in the early 1990's.
