Thanks again to all my family and friends, here and gone, who have helped along the way. 111 Abstract In this study I have examined relationships between biological, linguistic and cultural patternsof variability among 19th CenturyIndian groups of the American Great Plains. Through this research I have sought to address Cavalli-Sforza et al.'s (1994) call for studies regarding cultural and biological correlation and also to partially assess their methodology of equating linguistic relationships with biologically influential, ethnic boundaries. I have constructed biological, linguistic, andcultural distancematrices, based on the Boas database of anthropometric measurements, Ruhlen's(1976) and Campbell's (1997) linguistic taxonomies, and Murdock's (1967) EthnographicAtlas, respectively. Furthermore, I constructed a geographic distance matrix and a social distance matrix, based on ethnohistorical accounts of intergroup relations among the Plains groups. I subjected all matrices to the Mantel test of matrix comparison. There were no significantcorrelations between biological and linguistic, linguistic and cultural, or cultural and biological matrices. Biological relationships correlatedwith geographic distances in one out of fourcases. Social distances correlated variously with biological, linguistic, and cultural distances, with correlations ranging fromweak to moderately strong. These results indicate a considerable break with the assumptions of Cavalli-Sforza et al.' s ( 1994} model of clinal diversification. Furthermore, they indicate thatlinguistic boundaries are not always reliable indicators of ethnicity, inasmuch as ethnicity implies an inherent tendency towardMendelian delineation. iv Table of Contents Chapter Page I.     Diamond Jenness (1886-1969) HENRY B. COLLINS and WILLIAM E. TAYLOR Jr. Canada’smost distinguished anthropologist, Dr. Diamond Jenness, formerly Chiefof the Division of Anthropology, National Museums of Canada, and Honorary Associate of the Arctic Institute of North America, died peacefully at his home in the Gatineau Hills near Ottawa on 29 November, 1969. He was one of that rapidly-vanishing, virtually extinct kind - the all round anthropolo- gist, who, working seriously, turned out first-class publications in all four major branches of the discipline : ethnology, linguistics, archaeology, and physical anthropology. One must also add a fifth: applied anthropology, a fitting designa- tion for theseries of monographs on Eskimo administration in Alaska, Canada, and Greenland which he wrote after his retirement and which were published by the Arctic Institute between 1962 and 1968. Diamond Jennesswas born in Wellington,New Zealand, on 10 February 1886, and attended Victoria University College, one of the four branches of the University ofNew Zealand, wherehe graduated withfirst class honours in classics in 1908. Later he studied at Balliol College, Oxford, under one of the outstanding ethnologists of the time, Professor R. R. Marett. He received both a B.A. in Lit. Hum. and a diploma in Anthropology at Oxford in 1911. In 191 1-12 he was designated Oxford Scholar in Papua and was sent by the Uni- versity to make anthropological studies among the Northern d’Entrecasteaux, a primitive tribe dwelling on the islands of the D’Entrecasteaux Archipelago off the east coast of New Guinea. The results of this first field-work were published by Oxford University (1 920a).

    THE ROSE COLLECTION OF MOCCASINS IN THE CANADIAN MUSEUM OF CIVILIZATION : TRANSITIONAL WOODLAND/GRASSL AND FOOTWEAR David Sager 3636 Denburn Place Mississauga, Ontario Canada, L4X 2R2 Abstract/Resume Many specialists assign the attribution of "Plains Cree" or "Plains Ojibway" to material culture from parts of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In fact, only a small part of this area was Grasslands. Several bands of Cree and Ojibway (Saulteaux) became permanent residents of the Grasslands bor- ders when Reserves were established in the 19th century. They rapidly absorbed aspects of Plains material culture, a process started earlier farther west. This paper examines one such case as revealed by footwear.
