Hudson's Bay - State Papers, 1673-1696*

1 - State Papers, Domestic, Charles II, and of successive monarchs; Acts of the Privy Council of England; Colonial Office Papers, series C.O. 134, vols. 1-3 and C.O. 135, vols. 1-4. (285 + xx pp)

(Transcripts of most of the documents in C.O. series 134 and 135 bearing on the Hudson's Bay Company are in the Public Archives of Canada. A summary of C.O. 134 is contained in the 1895 Report of the Public Archives of Canada. This volume consists of copies and extracts taken from the transcripts in the Public Archives. A short introduction and an extensive table of contents have been added.)

The core of the material is a succession of petitions and appeals addressed to the English Government by the Company for protection from the depredations of the French, and for reparation along with the affidavits of servants overseas offered as proof of the charges made and the claims asserted. These petitions and appeals frequently led to action on the part of the King and his ambassadors, or to decisions by the Lords of Trade and Plantations, recorded in the series listed above.

This volume, representing but half the material, bears on the incursion of Father Albanel (1672), Radisson and Groseilliers (1682-3), De Troyes and Iberville (1686), and so on to the discussion which followed the Treaty of Ryswick, 1696. This volume also contains documents relating to ”interlopers" and to the prohibition of their raids.

An indication is given of the remainder of the documents, which stretch on well into the eighteenth century, at the end of the volume. (Handwritten).

2. - State Papers, 1697-1759. (2vols. - 428 pp).

These papers have also been copied from the transcripts in the Public Archives of Canada. Handwritten.

Peter Fidler1 s Map of Rupert's Land (8 photostat sheets)

Fidler’s journeys throughout Rupert’s Land resulted in a series of surveys (four volumes) which are preserved in the Public Archives.

Because he was more interested in the country he traversed and its posts and their history, Fidler’s surveys are even more important than those of David Thompson. The pen-sketches of the rivers and lakes on which posts were erected, contained in his journals provide more definitive descriptions of his routes. Fidler’s map is the sum of his individual surveys.

In contrast, Thompson's map surpasses that of Fidler. Unlike Fidler, he was granted a large sum of money to enable him to sum his surveys in the map. Fidler’s map, consequently, represents a personal effort which was not carried to perfection.

The knowledge of the country acquired by the Hudson’s Bay Company through its servants was passed onto Arrowsmith whose map of 1795 and subsequent corrected editions is of great importance.

(provided by R. Douglas, secretary of the Geographic Board - the original map is in the possession of the Board.) Note: David Thompson was trained to survey while in the service of the Hudson’s Bay Company by Philip Turnor, the Company’s surveyor. In 1797 Thompson entered the service of the North West Company. His Journals, Astronomical Observations, etc., are in MSS C500/4/24. The Journals relating to his Hudson’s Bay Company service are there indicated.

The Hudson’s Bay Company and the Worth West Company, 1819-1820

Copies of transcripts held in the Public Archives of Canada pertaining to the expiry of the Agreement by which the North West Company was constituted. Secret negotiations between the two companies commenced with George Moffat of , representing the Northwester Wintering Partners, approaching Lady Selkirk through her friend Samuel Gale, Jr., to ascertain whether or not the Hudson's Bay Company would become the Northwester's agent, supplying their outfits and selling their furs. Andrew Coleville, Lady Selkirk's brother and a member of the Committee of the Hudson's Bay Company, replied for her, proposing a real union of the two companies.

When word reached the Wintering Partners that , acting on behalf of the Northwesters, had failed to acquire Lord Selkirk's stock and consequently control of the English Company, few of the Partners were prepared to renew the Agrument and negotiations on union of the companies proceeded. Because these negotiations were carried on verbally in London, there is no documentary record of them. c. 1 Handwritten copy. (115 + v pp)

Oakes, Ermatinger, Gray

Forrest Oakes’ Account Book, July 29, 1765 - February 24, 1780.

Oakes, brother-in-law to Lawrence Ermatinger, was in partnership with Charles Boyer and was a frequenter of the North-West during the French Regime. Oakes was probably the first Englishman from Montreal to winter on the River. (See A.S. Morton, “Forrest Oakes, Charles Boyer, Joseph Fulton and Peter Pangman," Transactions of the Royal Society of Canada, 1937.)

Oakes’ account book provides at least some information pertaining to the trading operation of the firm, Oakes & Boyer, their "North West Adventure,” and less clearly, their ’’Nipigon Adventure." Of note is the relation of the Oakes-Boyer partnership with that of Peter Pangman and Joseph Fulton.

Lawrence Ermatinger’s Engagement and Account Book, 1773-75 and Letter Book, June 23, 1770-September 21, 1778.

Ermatinger, a Swiss by origin, was a "marchand equipeur" in Montreal, a merchant who supplied capital and outfitted wintering partners (ie., Oakes & Boyer). These books provide some insight into the business activities of an equipper.

Edward William Gray’s Letter Book, July 4» 1774-June 2, 1791.

The Gray letters portray the general life of Montreal where E.W.Gray served as Sheriff. There are several references to James Finlay, the Elder, in these letters.

Letters of Alexander Mackenzie, 1786-1819.

Although these letters cover Mackenzie’s career, the majority were written while he was a wintering partner in the English (Churchill) River and in the Athabaska Departments. They show him moving around the country and at times give his opinions on current events in connection with the North West Company. There are a few references to Lord Selkirk and his fugitive co-operation with Mackenzie in purchasing Hudson's Bay Company stock.

(These letters are found in the Reminiscences of Roderick Mackenzie, Sir Alexander's cousin, in the Masson Papers held by the Public Archives of Canada. Extracts of most of these letters have been printed in L.R. Masson, Les Bourgeois de la Compagnie du Nord-Ouest, Quebec, 1889 )

Journals and Letters of William McGillivray

Journal, about February 7 to June 14, 1793.

This is a fragment of McGillivray's journal for the trading season 1792-93 during which he was quartered in the North West Company's post on Ile à la Crosse. Besides keeping charge of that post, he was, as Wintering Partner, in control of the English (Churchill) River Department of which "Les Rats” (David Thompson’s "Muskrat Country") was a distant sub-division. He mentions his more immediate outposts as being Lac d'Orignal, Lac Poule d'Eau (Waterhen), Green Lake, Lac la Ronge, and Caribou Lake. In addition to references to Alexander Fraser and , the Elder, the journal provides an insight into the operation of a North West Company department. McGillivray also records the steps he took which issued in the establishment of Cumberland House, where northern brigades could be provisioned.

Letters, July 21, 1791 - June 20, 1792. These letters have been gathered from the Masson Papers in the Public Archives which are bound under the title, "Memoirs of Roderick Mackenzie.”

Journal, September 9, 17&9 to June 13, 1790.

This journal is for the trading season in what McGillivray refers to as "Les Rats" whose boundaries may be said to have been the Nelson, Churchill and Sturgeon- Weir (Rivière Maligne) Rivers. McGillivray’s post was on the north side of Pukketawagan Lake, an expansion of the Churchill. His route to this post from Cumberland Lake was up Rivière Maligne to Rat River (now Goose River) and by Goose River and Lake to Athapapaskow Lake; thence over the height of land to and down Kississing River to its confluence with the Churchill (McGillivray's "The Forks") and up the Churchill to its expansion above Pukketawagan Falls (Lake). The Journal provides an interesting picture of trade and life at a post in the wooded north. It refers to the Indians trading at York Fort, to the , and to McGillivray's desire to establish trade relations with the Chipewyans. It also mentions John Thomson (Thompson) as being at Lac d'Outarde and refers to Portage du Traite.

John Macdonald of Garth

Surnamed “Bras-Croche” from a crippled right arm.

Macdonald served the first years of his apprenticeship as a clerk at Fort d’Orignal in the valley of . Most of his career was spent in the Forts des Prairies Department of the North West Company at posts on the North Saskatchewan - Fort George, Sturgeon Fort near the mouth of the Sturgeon River west of Prince Albert, Island Fort, Fort Augustus, and Rocky Mountain Fort. He also passed a short period at Fort Espérance on the Qu’Appelle River as head of the Upper Red River Department. Towards the end of his career as a Winterer, he was in the Columbia River Department - one season at Kootenae post and later some time at Fort George (Astoria) at the mouth of the Columbia.

These ’’Autobiographical Notes” were dictated when Macdonald was extremely old. They are picturesque, imaginative and very egotistical. At times they are inaccurate and their chronology must not be trusted implicitly. (The original is owned by his grandson, Mr. A de Léry Macdonald of Rigaud, Quebec. These copies were made from photostats in the Public Archives of Canada. Extracts from "Autobiographical Notes" have been printed in L.R. Masson, Les Bourgeois de la Compagnie du Nord-Ouest, vol. It provides a very particular list of all the portages passed by him and their length.

This work gives a general picture of the trade carried on by the company and describes its success in keeping the Indians loyal to His Majesty and the British cause. It also discusses the use of liquor in the trade and tells of the Company’s incipient trade beyond the Rockies and of its plan to occupy the valley of the Columbia.

Although the work is anonymous, the Introductory Note to its printed in the 1928 Report of the Public Archives of Canada proposes reason for believing it came from the hand of Duncan McGillivray. There are notes in the margin of the manuscript and certain additions in the hand of William McGillivray. The manuscript was printed under the title, On the Origin and Progress of the North West Company, London, 1811. (See Mss C500/4/11.1)

Hudson's Bay Company Papers

1- These papers, covering the years 1821 - 1825, represent a judicious selection of documents in the Hudson's Bay Company Archives illustrating the direction provided by the Governor and Committee of the Company to schemes designed to minimize the hardships involved in uniting with the North West Company. During the steps to union, a number of company servants had to be dismissed and attempts were made to establish moral and religious codes and institutions within the company's territories. In addition to routine business letters, there are letters by Governor George Simpson, Nicholas Garry, and Benjamin Harrison in the collection.

The selection of documents was made by the late William Smith, Public Archives of Canada, and presented on the understanding that they would not be used in any public way.

Journal of the Red River Settlement 1869-70, by Alexander Begg

Begg was a business partner of A.G.B. Bannatyne. Their firm looked after the post office as well as having all the news. Begg has put much of it into his Journal objectively. He was a Canadian and had been in the settlement for some time, but he dissociated himself from Dr. John Schultz and the Canadian party. Bannatyne belonged to the group which attempted to mediate between the early English and French settlers in an attempt to find common ground concerning their rights as British citizens to self government.

The Journal reflects, probably accurately, the sentiments of moderate men of all groups in the settlement. It portrays a day by day view of the progress of the disturbances in the Red River Settlement, and provides a close up view of in action. Begg is very sympathetic to the government by the Hudson's Bay Company of the settlement and offers views of the Council of Assiniboia.

Rev. James Taylor Papers

Taylor was a member of the Red River Settlement, then he went to Prince Albert and finally to Portland, Oregon. He strongly believed that the Hudson's Bay Company robbed the Chief Factors and Chief Traders when it sold out to the International Finance Company in 1863 and he felt these men had a right to a share of the .£300,000 which the Company received for giving up its rights in Rupert's Land. In fact the Deed Polls gave the Chief Factors and Chief Traders a share only in the profits or losses of each successive trading season.
