Women of Batoche Batoche's Métis Women Played Many Key Roles Women of Batoche Batoche’s Métis women played many key roles during the 1885 Resistance. They nursed the wounded, nurtured children and Elders, melted lead to form bullets, provided supplies to the men in the trenches and a few even influenced Métis strategy. While the fighting was raging in Batoche, most of the Métis women, children, and Elders hid themselves in a secluded flat surrounded by bluffs, on the east side of the South Saskatchewan River. Some Cree from the One Arrow and Beardy’s Reserves joined them. The families stayed in tents or dugouts covered with robes, blankets or branches. Mary Fiddler said that her grandmother hid herself and her grandchildren, along the riverbank, under several coats during the day, while at night they used them as blankets. While in hiding, the women shared what little food that they possessed and cared for the children and Elders. In the village, Madeleine (Wilkie) Dumont, Gabriel’s wife, and the elderly Madame Marie (Hallet) Letendre cooked and tended the sick and wounded. Marguerite (née Dumas) Caron influenced Métis strategy during the 1885 Resistance. During the Battle of Fish Creek (April 24, 1885) she told Louis Riel to reinforce the beleaguered Métis forces. She could see that the Métis, including her husband and two sons, were under heavy enemy fire. Riel told her that she should pray for them. At that point, she told Riel that unless he sent reinforcements, she would go herself. Riel listened and sent reinforcements, which prevented the Métis from being defeated. Another strong woman, Marie-Anne (née Caron) Parenteau, told Father Fourmond, in St. Laurent, that if the police (soldiers) came, she would “skin them like buffalo”. During the Battle of Batoche (May 9-12, 1885) the Métis ran out of ammunition. Women provided a solution: they melted lead in order to form bullets. Two women who did this were Madame Véronique Fidler (née Gervais) and Rosalie (née Parenteau), wife of Philippe Gariépy. Madame Fidler melted the lead that came wrapped around Hudson’s Bay Company goods such as frying pans, while Madame Gariépy melted down lead kettles and the linings of tea tins. Women also played a spiritual role during the 1885 Resistance. They prayed for the men’s safety, attended Father Moulin’s masses and received communion. They also attended Louis Riel’s reformed church, where they prayed to Our Lady of Lourdes. After the Métis were defeated at Batoche, the women had to provide for their families during this grim period. As soon as the battle concluded, women, children, and Elders, fearing for their lives, were forced to flee in a hurry. In doing so, they abandoned almost all their personal possessions. They left camp on foot to the Minitinas Hills, south of Batoche. Food was so scarce that they ate whatever was on hand, such as dog meat, plant roots, and galettes (bannock), which they had stuffed in their pockets. Three days after the surrender, they made the 29-kilometre walk back to Batoche. Louis Riel’s wife Marguerite (née Bellehumeur, dit Monet) who was pregnant at the time, walked down the riverbank with her two children and other women. The young family hid in the bluffs. During the cold and damp weather, she covered her children under a light canvas. Louis Riel visited them three times before he surrendered. When the Métis women arrived back to their homes, they found them pillaged. Some were even burned to the ground. Madame Amélie (née Poitras) Fisher, wife of Georges Fisher, found $230 taken from her handbag. Madame Champagne (née Letendre) saw her family lose its horses, wheat and flour. Mary Fiddler said that when her grandmother returned to her house it had been burned down. All she had left was some flour that they had hid in the basement of an old house. After the fall of Batoche on May 12, 1885, women advised their husbands to go into exile in the United States. Their advice proved timely: all the Métis leaders who stayed were arrested, even though General Middleton had promised that they would not be prosecuted. Few women blamed the men for the outbreak of the Resistance, most blamed the government. With the conclusion of the fighting, many women suffered great hardships. Catherine Godon, widow of André Letendre, was left to provide for twelve children. Judith Parenteau, widow of Isidore Dumont, and Catherine Delorme, widow of Donald Ross, both had to accept government food relief. In October 1885, Riel’s wife Marguerite suffered a miscarriage, and then died of tuberculosis in May 1886. Madame Josephte Tourond was widowed with nine children, and in addition, had both personal and property losses. Her house was ransacked, her cattle was stolen or slaughtered, and her fields were destroyed. Worse still, she lost two sons on the last day of the battle, and then a third son died soon afterwards of consumption (tuberculosis). Then she lost another two daughters to the sickness. Madeleine Dumont died shortly after joining Gabriel in the Montana Territory in 1886. Nine of Batoche’s women died from deprivations following the 1885 Resistance, either from consumption, flu or miscarriages. Younger widows had to depend on other families for shelter and sustenance, or else they had to remarry. Josephte (née Gervais), who was the widow of Calixte Tourond, found a job teaching at Vandal School near Fish Creek, however, most other single women had to find work as domestics. The Widows, Josephte Tourond, Marguerite Caron and Marie Champagne worked and managed their family farms. Madame Tourond ran her farm with the help of her extended family until 1928. Very few of Batoche’s women were fully compensated for their losses. For instance, Josephte Tourond had sons involved in the fighting. As a result, she only received $2,805 of her $8,451 claim. By contrast, merchant families who had not been involved in the Resistance, such as the Letendres, Vennes, Boyers, and Fishers, were compensated while the labouring classes of farmers and freighters were not, even if they had not been involved in the conflict.     Métis Nation of Ontario Who was Louis Riel? Louis, the first child of Louis Riel and Julie Lagimodière, was born on October 22, 1844 in St. Boniface, Manitoba. Louis spent his childhood on the east bank of the Red River, not far from St. Boniface. He grew up among the Métis and was extremely conscious of his identity. At the age of seven, he began his education, eventually studying at the school established in the settlement in 1854 by a Christian brother. With the aim of training priests for the young colony, in 1858, Bishop Tache sent him and two other boys, Daniel McDougall and Louis Schmidt to Montreal to continue their studies. Louis was admitted to the Collège de Montréal where he spent the next eight years studying Latin, Greek, French, English, philosophy and the sciences. Louis proved an excellent student, rising quickly to the top of his class. In January 1864, Louis was overwhelmed with grief by the death of his beloved father whom he had not seen since leaving Red River. A subsequent attitude change prompted his teachers to question Louis’ commitment to a religious vocation. A year later he left his residency at Collège de Montréal to become a day student. But after breaking the rules several times and repeatedly missing class, he was asked to leave both the college and convent. He left College and returned to the Red River in a world fraught with intense political activity and intense nationalism. Louis lived with his aunt, Lucia Riel, and managed to find employment in a law office.

CONCEPTS Dominion Land Surveyor Dominion Land Surveyors were sent out to western Canada by the federal government to divide Crown lands into square sections (cadastres) for agricultural and other purposes. Métis, métis Métis, with a capital M, means a member of the Métis nation, a person of mixed Indigenous (primarily Anishinaabe and Cree) and European (primarily French and Scottish) descent. Section 35 of the Constitution Act , 1982, recognized the Métis as Aboriginal people. The Métis constitute a nation not just legally, but socially: over time they have established a national consciousness, a distinctive identity, and their own culture and values. A person can self-identify as métis, a more generic term for a person of mixed heritage. This is an individual identity rather than an expression of membership in a distinctive culture with specific rights. Michif or mechif or mitchif Linguists classify Michif as a mixed language rather than a creole language, though there is some disagreement about this categorization. Michif emerged in the early 19 th century from the increasing contact between (French) Canadian fur traders and the Indigenous inhabitants of the Prairies, particularly the Cree. Michif typically consists of French nouns, numerals, articles and adjectives, combined with Cree syntax and verb structures. Michif was also influenced by Assiniboine and Nishnaabemwin, an eastern Ojibwa dialect. It was spoken by the Métis of western Canada and North Dakota. Like many languages around the world, Michif is slowly disappearing: currently, there are fewer than 1,000 Michif speakers in Canada.

This list is based on the names taken from the actual monument at the Batoche National Historical Park. Lawrence J. Duck Lake, March 26, 1885: Dumont, Isidore Jr. Born in 1833 in the Red River Settlement (now Manitoba) to Isidore Dumont Sr. and Louise Laframboise. His wife was Judith Parenteau. They had fifteen children. He was Gabriel Dumont’s older brother. During the Battle of Duck Lake, Joe McKay, a North-West Mounted Police interpreter, killed him. Moments earlier, McKay shot and killed the Cree headman Assiyiwin, these were the opening shots of the 1885 Resistance. Laframboise, Auguste Born in 1844 in the Red River Settlement (now Manitoba) to Jean-Baptiste Laframboise and Suzanne Beaudry (Gaudry). He married Louise Ledoux. They had ten children. Montour, Jean-Baptiste Born in 1857 in Assumption, Pembina (in what is now northern North Dakota) to Pascal Montour Sr. and Madeleine Richard. He married Caroline Dumont, the daughter of Isidore Dumont and Judith Parenteau. They had two children. Montour, Pascal Jr. Born in 1852 to Pascal Montour Sr. and Madeleine Richard. He was married to Judith Dumont. Montour, Joseph Born in 1865 to Pascal Montour Sr. and Madeleine Richard. School had taught me that history was something found in Europe, United States and possibly if you could stand the boredom, Eastern Canada. Everybody believed that Canadian History was dull. I was touched by what I saw at Batoche. The church, the graveyard, the river valley and the rows of trenches. Here men had lived and died for what they believed. Since that time I have visited hundreds of historic sites and have become fascinated with the rich cultural heritage we have in Western Canada. This project was an attempt to make people more aware. The souvenir publication is the final chapter and is being published and distributed Dn the 100th Anniversary of the hanging of Louis Riel. One hundred years ago, the Illustrated War News recorded the events (with prejudices, of course) and we have decided to use newspaper clippings to tell our story as wel 1. It was a most interesting project. There were disappointments but overall it was a great success. We resurrected the romantic sternwheeler and gave it a new use as a modern recreational craft. Without a doubt, yau will see more of these on our rivers and lakes in the future. And if the worst occurs and there is no spin-off, at least there is the satisfaction that 150 of these booklets arts now across Canada. Maybe one or two will survive until the bicentennial and someone will be inspired to try it all again.

    Louis Riel (1844-1885): Biography Louis Riel, Métis leader and martyr, was born in St. Boniface, Red River Settlement (later Winnipeg, Manitoba) on October 22, 1844 to Jean- Louis Riel and Julie Lagimodière. He was the oldest of eleven children. In March 1882, he married Marguerite Monet dit Bellehumeur in Carrol, Montana Territory. The couple had two children: Jean (May 1882) and Angèlique (September 1883). After arguably the most politically explosive trial in Canadian history, he was executed for High Treason on November 16, 1885. Louis Riel led the Métis in two resistances during 1869-70 in Red River and in 1885 in the Saskatchewan District of the North-West Territories (present-day central Saskatchewan). Riel had leadership in his blood: his father Jean-Louis organized Métis hunters and traders to bring an end to the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC)’s fur trading monopoly. Guillaume Sayer and three other Métis had been charged with illegal trading. However, on May 17, 1849, the day of their trial, the senior Riel organized an armed group of Métis outside of the courthouse. While the traders were found guilty, the Métis were so intimidating that the HBC Magistrate who presided over the trial let Guillaume and the others go without imposing a fine. This event virtually ended the HBC’s monopoly trading monopoly in what is now Western Canada. Louis Riel did not at first want a life in politics. When he was fourteen, priests sent him and other intelligent Métis boys to Canada East (now Québec) to attend the collège de Montréal.

For native peoples, the past is often a battleground, where native interpretations of events come up against colonial, European narratives that emphasize native erasure and Euro-American colonial triumph. Thus for native people, reclaiming the past and articulating a distinct form of their own history is vital to emphasizing their continued presence in the contemporary world . Through an examination of the Métis people of Western Canada, who, since the late 19th and early 20th century have sought to reclaim their history, I hope to show that for native peoples, the past is a battleground that is directly tied to contemporary native concerns.

Abstract This dissertation analyses two of the Canadian state’s earliest military operations through the lens of personal and collective memory: The Red River conflict of 1869-70 and the Northwest Campaign of 1885. Both campaigns were directed by the Canadian state against primarily Métis and First Nations opponents. In each case, resistance to Canadian hegemony was centered on, though not exclusively led by, Métis leader Louis Riel. This project focuses on the various veteran communities that were created in the aftermath of these two events. On one side, there were the Canadian government soldiers who had served in the campaigns and were initially celebrated by English-Canadian society.
