Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Takuya Hino All rights reserved ABSTRACT Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino In this dissertation I provide a detailed analysis of the role played by the Tachikawa-ryū in the development of Japanese esoteric Buddhist doctrine during the medieval period (900-1200). In doing so, I seek to challenge currently held, inaccurate views of the role played by this tradition in the history of Japanese esoteric Buddhism and Japanese religion more generally. The Tachikawa-ryū, which has yet to receive sustained attention in English-language scholarship, began in the twelfth century and later came to be denounced as heretical by mainstream Buddhist institutions. The project will be divided into four sections: three of these will each focus on a different chronological stage in the development of the Tachikawa-ryū, while the introduction will address the portrayal of this tradition in twentieth-century scholarship. Introduction The term hijiri1 has been translated in various ways: as "holy man", "saint", "sage", "gods and genii", "itinerant monk", etc. Although in the first half of the twentieth century hijiri did not attract much attention, since the 1950s there has been an increasing scholarly interest in them. In the recent decades a great number of publications have paved the way for a revision of many traditional views regarding the development of Japanese Buddhism from an aristocratic and exclusive religion in ancient times to a popular religion in the medieval era.2 Various authors have stressed the importance of hijiri for the popularization of Buddhism in Japan as well as for the establishment of the mainstream denominations centering on the belief either in Amida and his Pure Land or in the salvific power of the Lotus Sütra. In most cases, the term hijiri has been mistakenly used as an umbrella term to denote a whole range of variant extramonastic Buddhist practitioners who were apparently not called hijiri by their contemporaries. The term, which was originally applied exclusively to a specific type of ascetic, was thus blurred until it was almost deprived of its meaning. This paper aims to reevaluate the religious phenomenon of hijiri and their significance for the establishment of the so-called "New Kamakura Buddhism". The study is based primarily on an investigation of tale collections (setsuwa-shü a^ffiÄ) from the early ninth to the early thirteenth centuries, which are generally acknowledged as the most important source materials for the examination of hijiri in the Heian period ^SrBfft (794-1185). -

Returning to the Founder: Śākyamuni Devotion in Early Medieval Japan and Japanese Buddhist Conceptions of History Luke Noel Thompson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2017 © 2017 Luke Noel Thompson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Returning to the Founder: Śākyamuni Devotion in Early Medieval Japan and Japanese Buddhist Conceptions of History Luke Noel Thompson This dissertation examines Japanese conceptions of and devotional attitudes toward Śākyamuni (the historical Buddha) during the twelfth to fourteenth centuries. It focuses in particular on a new interest in Śākyamuni that arose in the twelfth century, and argues that this interest was a response to two developments: the appearance of the belief that the world had entered Buddhism’s final age, and the increasingly acute sense that Japan existed at the periphery of the Buddhist world. These two developments evoked in some clerics a sense of distance from the origins of Buddhism and a feeling of helplessness since the final age was a time when soteriological progress was thought to be particularly difficult. Japanese Buddhists were thus faced with a problem: how to proceed given these disadvantageous circumstances? Some clerics found comfort in theories about the Buddha Amida’s ability to take humans away from this world to his pure land, while others turned instead to the Mahāyāna Buddhist idea that humans are born enlightened (and thus need not worry about their personal salvation after all). The monks and texts at the center of my research instead looked to Śākyamuni in an attempt to reconnect with the source of the Buddhist tradition, thereby countering the inevitable decline of Buddhism by linking themselves to, and in some cases recreating, the imagined golden age that Śākyamuni and his Indian environs represented. -

It demonstrates that the paintings were produced at Onjōji, a Tendai Buddhist temple in the eastern foothills of Mount Hiei, and owned by Shōgoin, its sub-temple in Kyoto. These temples were affiliated with the Jimon branch of Tendai associated with the esoteric cleric Enchin (814-891)), and were, by the time of the production of the mandara, in heated doctrinal, institutional, and political dispute over independence from the Tendai headquarters at Enryakuji. Three primary issues related to the mandara are addressed. First is the purpose of their production. The dissertation questions earlier claims that miya mandara primarily functioned as visual tools allowing mental visits to depicted sacred sites in place of expensive and arduous pilgrimages. -

Green Under the supervision of Professor Gudrun Bühnemann At the University of Wisconsin-Madison This dissertation is a study of the life of the Kūkai (774-822), known posthumously by the honorific title Kōbō Daishi (Great Teacher who Propagated the Dharma). Kūkai is best known as the founder of Japanese Shingon Tantric Buddhism. The study is based primarily on writings attributed to him and his immediate followers and secondarily on early legends (those apparently dating from the Heian period) as identified by modern researchers. These writings show that Kūkai was involved in a variety of social activities. In some instances I have attempted to understand the socio-political intention of Kūkai’s biographers, his followers and others. However, I devote more time to interpreting the biographical stories and Kūkai’s words in light of their literary, iconographic and religious images. I have based a large part of my own interpretations on modern iconographic guides, various encyclopedias and dictionaries of Buddhism. In addition to exploring the specifics of Kūkai’s religious practices based on those early writings, I point to the amount of time and effort he spent on other activities, based on those same writings, and examine the nature of these activities. -
