Performance history and sources of each number
The following tables combine information from a range of musical sources and libretti, in order to present an overview of changes in voice‐type and in the order of numbers at performances between 1761 and 1785. The autograph score (A) was evidently used for performances in 1761, 1769 and 1784–5, to judge from the annotated singers’ names: so in all these cases the column unites information from such annotations and from the printed libretto.
The following abbreviations are used, in addition to those listed in the edition:
abbrev abbreviated App Appendix Chor Chorus orig original(ly) Recit (s+a) Recitative (secco and accompanied) Tr Treble (boy soprano) v verse var variant
Rows in italics represent displaced or replacement numbers. Strike‐through indicates a section not set or deleted at some time (‘not sung’, ‘left out in performance’, ‘omitted’, struck through by hand). Some libretti contain additional text, not noted here. Only the most significant variants of title and character are indicated: some of these recur in later sources. 2
