FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 10, 2005 SLIDE HAMPTON PRESENTS a SALUTE to ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM at RAMAPO COLLEGE of NEW JERSEY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Bonnie Franklin: [email protected] or Rosa Diaz-Mulryan: [email protected] February 10, 2005 SLIDE HAMPTON PRESENTS A SALUTE TO ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM AT RAMAPO COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY Mahwah) – The sounds of Rio and Ipanema will float through the Sharp Theater at Ramapo College when an all-star band led by legendary trombonist and arranger Slide Hampton returns to the College Saturday, March 19 at 8 p.m. Jazz at the Berrie Center presents Bossa Nova Nights, Slide Hampton’s Salute to Antonio Carlos Jobim. Brazilian vocalist Maucha Adnet, who toured with Jobim the last decade of his life, will reprise the bossas and sambas so familiar to the world, including “Desafinado” and “How Insensitive.” Antonio Carlos Jobim, who died in 1994, was a Brazilian composer and songwriter. His arrangements combined modernist classical touches with a suave swing similar to North American “cool” jazz. Jobim pioneered bossa nova, and wrote many of the genre’s greatest hits including “The Girl From Ipanema” and “Desafinado.” The bossa nova was popularized worldwide in the early 1960s. Tickets for Bossa Nova Nights are $23 for adults, $20 for senior citizens and $12 for youth. The Sharp Theater is located at the Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts on the Ramapo College campus. For more information call 201.684.7844. This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. # # # #.

The Subversive Songs of Bossa Nova: Tom Jobim in the Era of Censorship Irna Priore and Chris Stover OSSA nova flourished in Brazil at the end of the 1950s. This was a time of rapid Bdevelopment and economic prosperity in the country, following President Jucelino Kubitschek’s 1956 proclamation of “fifty years of progress in five,” but after the 1964 coup d’état, when General Humberto Castello Branco’s military regime took control of Brazil, the positive energy of the bossa nova era quickly dissipated.1 Soon after the 1964 coup the atmosphere changed: civil rights were suppressed, political dissent was silenced, and many outspoken singer-songwriters, authors and playwrights, journalists, and academics were censored, arrested, and imprisoned. First-generation bossa nova artists, however, were able to avoid such persecution because their music was generally perceived as apolitical.2 This essay challenges this perception by analyzing the ways in which iconic bossa nova composer Antônio Carlos (“Tom”) Jobim inscribed subversive political thought through musical syntax and lyrical allegory in several of his post-1964 songs. We begin by providing a brief overview of the socio-political history of 1960s Brazil, considering some general features of the Brazilian protest song (canção engajada) before focusing on Chico Buarque’s anthemic “Roda viva” as an exemplar of that style. We then move to a detailed examination of the Jobim compositions “Sabiá” and “Ligia,” the lyrics to both of which speak of love, longing, and saudade in the manner of many bossa nova songs, but within which can be found incisive (if carefully coded) critiques of the Castello Branco government.

  • Jobim, Chopin, and the Qualities of Bossa Nova Charles Berg
Jobim, Chopin, and the Qualities of Bossa Nova Charles Berg December 12, 2017 Abstract The purpose of this research project is twofold. First, in this project, I endeavor to determine specific elements of Frederic Chopin’s widely recognized musical influence on Antonio Jobim by constructing and comparing analyses of two of their respective works, “Prelude in E Minor” and “Insensatez.” Second, using these analyses as a groundwork, I intend to directly synthesize my own bossa nova composition from Chopin’s prelude to demonstrate the similarity of Chopin’s prelude and Jobim’s bossa nova song and the influence of Chopin on Jobim. 1 Introduction: In all cultures, music changes over time. In Western culture, the music created today, classical or popular, sounds vastly different from the music of composers from past centuries, such as Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin. However, the works of many composers throughout history, even those from contrasting times and places, have definite similarities, and some composers have been greatly influenced by those who preceded them. One such instance of this is the influence of the Polish Romantic composer Frederic Chopin, who lived from 1810 to 1849, on the Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, who lived from 1927 until the year 1994. Jobim himself admitted that he was greatly influenced by Chopin,1 despite the facts that Jobim was born nearly eighty years after the death of Chopin and that he lived on an entirely different continent than Chopin. When one listens to certain compositions by the two composers, one may not recognize the influence immediately, but the influence can be clearly seen in the comparison of Chopin’s “Prelude in E Minor,” opus 28, number 4, with Jobim’s bossa nova song 1 Suzel Reily.

PO Box 1236 Saratoga Springs NY 12866 USA a.c. jobim/nelson riddle series bonita (1965) Background: Antonio Carlos Jobim is considered one of the greatest songwriters of the twentieth century. He is a national hero in Brazil, where an airport and streets are named for him. His influence in the jazz world is overwhelming, and new recordings of his songs continue to increase in each passing year. Jobim, whose father was a diplomat, was born in 1927. Antonio grew up in Rio de Janeiro, and learned both the guitar and piano as a boy. He later said that he was influenced by Debussy and Ravel. He studied with a German piano teacher and was exposed to modern classical music. Although he briefly studied architecture, he played piano in nightclubs, and eventually wrote arrangements for recording dates. In 1956, he met Vinicius de Moraes who had written a play based on the Orpheus legend. When Black Orpheus was made into a movie, Jobim wrote the score. Although it was based on the samba, the score had a harmonic richness previously unheard in Brazilian music.
