Bettina (Bettine) Von Arnim
Arnim, Bettina (Bettine) von Bettina von Arnim war eine zentrale Gestalt der deut- schen Romantik, die ihre Epoche nachhaltig prägte und ein vielfältiges Schaffen hinterließ. Durch ihre Beziehun- gen zu Beethoven, Schumann und Liszt ist sie auch mu- sikgeschichtlich von Bedeutung. Ihr eigenes musikali- sches Werk umfasst vor allem Lieder. Für großes Aufse- hen sorgte ihr politisches und soziales Engagement. Orte und Länder Bettina von Arnim wirkte hauptsächlich in Frankfurt und Berlin. Biografie Ihre Eltern waren der aus Italien stammende Frankfur- ter Großkaufmann Peter Anton Brentano (1735–1797) und dessen Gattin Maximiliane von La Roche (1756–1793). Großmutter mütterlicherseits war die Sch- riftstellerin Sophie von La Roche (1730–1807), die von Goethe schwärmerisch verehrt wurde. Der Dichter Cle- mens Brentano (1778–1842) war ihr Bruder. Nach dem frühen Tod ihrer Mutter wurde Bettina Brenta- no von 1794 bis 1797 im Ursulinenkloster Fritzlar erzo- Bettine von Arnim (um 1810) gen und zog nach dem Tod des Vaters, 1797, zu ihrer Großmutter Sophie von La Roche nach Offenbach. Dort Bettina (Bettine) von Arnim fand sie zahlreiche Briefe Goethes, die sie veranlassten, Geburtsname: Elisabeth Catharina Ludovica Magdalena in Frankfurt Goethes Mutter aufzusuchen. Am 23. Bettine's Das Leben der Hochgr?fin Gritta von Rattenzuhausbeiuns Shawn C. Jarvis Bettine and Gisela von Arnim's fairy tale novel Das Leben der Hochgr?fin Gritta von Rattenzuhausbeiuns has gone almost completely unnoticed in the reception of their works and in discussions of the M?rchen genre. This is perhaps not surprising, given that Kunstm?rchen by women have generally been ignored and that this particular work has led a somewhat dubious existence for the past 140 years. Gritta was not pubi i shed during Bettine ' s or Gisela' s 1 i feti nie (mysteriously, Bettine never included it in her own collectecj works), nor was its authorship and date of inception certain until recent archival work uncovered manuscripts in Gisela's hand, her drawings of pivotal scenes from the M?rchen and the typeset title page dated 1845. -

Gisela von Arnim Writer Born in Berlin, August 30th, 1827; Died in Florence, April 4th, 1889 The youngest of Achim and Bettina von Arnim’s seven children, Gisela, was christened Gisela Ottilia Beata. “Gisela was only four years old when her father died and from there on lived together with her mother, and it is said Bettina spoilt her daughter and apparently favourite child with attendance and care to such an extent that Gisela developed spiritually far above her age. Even before the age of six years she took great delight in being read Shakespeare and only learned to read and write very fast herself to not to be dependent on others anymore. ’Gisela was highly talented, understood everything, knew a lot, but did not want to learn,’ lamented Maxe, who taught her younger sister, apart from spelling (…), also arithmetic, geography and French. Of the three sisters (Maxe, Armgart, Gisela) she was the most gifted and most witty. Besides her intelligence she was beautiful with finely chiselled features, a noble brow and eyes full of expression. As a child, being very charming to look at, she took part in the “Living Tableaus”, (“Lebende Bilder” = a play that was composed of living statues and little dramatic scenes arranged by young ladies and dames of the “Kaffeter” Circle 1 and organized for the Berlin society circles), but as a young girl she did not take part at the festivities at [royal] court because of her democratic conviction. She could paint and draw, write poems and stories and also compose, but she squandered her time with her various interests too much to become a really famous artist. -

At the Ballantyne Press INTRODUCTION IF good wine needs no bush, then should such an excellent piece of work as Professor Moser's biog raphy of Joseph Joachim need no introduction on its appearance in an English dress; but, besides the accident that the author's name is not as yet very widely known in this country, there are a few points in his work which may at least partly excuse a few remarks that might seem superfluous. The task which Prof. Moser undertook was a most enviable one, for very few biographers have had to tell the story of a life so full of dignity, usefulness, and beauty, or one which embodies so completely the realisation of the noblest ideals in art and character. The career of Joachim is very far indeed from being the mere record of successful performances, though no one in the history of music has enjoyed more fully than he the enthusiasm of the intellectual public, or has so well deserved it.
