Signed i Abstract The main aim of this thesis is to tackle the lack of conceptual clarity that surrounds place management, and seeks to establish place management as an interdisciplinary boundary concept that combines a variety of conceptual lenses and allows for the problematisation of the field from different theoretical approaches. Throughout the thesis, the ‘social spatialisation’ of place management via the examination of emergent and deliberate practices that shape the strategic, economic, social and political use of places is suggested. Nuanced descriptions of place and space that stem from a plethora of geographic theories are combined with the adoption of ontologically and epistemologically diverse theoretical foundations, and suggest a turn towards an engaged, pluralistic theory of the place management concept. By adopting a multi-sited ethnographic approach, coupled with the extended case method, this study seeks to understand how place management practices construct both global and local understandings of places. Reflexive accounts of the place management process, as this was observed and studied in ten UK towns, and in the squatted areas Christiania and Metelkova, are presented in the form of structural tales, and led to the development of a reflexive account of the place management process in multiple locales. Based on the detailed analysis of both empirical studies, it is argued that a reflexive, hybrid approach towards place management allows for the development of more inclusive leadership models that gain more legitimacy and accountability. Furthermore, it is shown that place management is a deeply politicised process that signifies possibilities for alternative understandings of places from conditions of spontaneity, experimentation, and political engagement. Ultimately, it is argued that practices of collective knowledge exchange, place ownership, self-organisation and self-management, can prevent the vacillation, mundanity and annihilation of the soft spaces where place management is enacted. This reflexive deliberation opens up possibilities for dialogical understanding and consensus in place management, and fosters conditions for collective and co-creative capacities for place development. ii Acknowledgements There are a number of people who have contributed towards the completion of this thesis in various ways over the past five-plus years. The lake was the dwelling place of a monster, which Jason fought, defeated and killed. The monster, now referred to as the Ljubljana Dragon, found its place atop the castle tower depicted on the Ljubljana coat of arms.

    Dalmatia Delights A Rough Guide to the Tour 2 Dalmatia Delights Preface This guide (entirely and unashamedly lifted from other sources, mostly cited) tries to follow the Dalmatian Delights itinerary for the Ferris Wheels tour. Its purpose is to present in one place some highlights of the tour; and, hopefully, save participants from buying several guide books, although there is at least one book (Western Balkans, Lonely Planet) that covers a lot but not all of the itinerary. First, a little introduction to Dalmatia. As I noted on my Dalmatia page, the term is a loose way of referring, partly to Dalmacija, a region in Croatia, but then, loosely, to surrounding regions spanning coast, hinterland and mountains in parts of Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and, for good measure, the Passo di Stelvio in the Italian Dolomites. So don’t get too hung up on the name. More strictly speaking, Dalmatia (Croatian: Dalmacija), is an historical region on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea and is situated in Croatia. It spreads between the island of Rab in the northwest and the Bay of Kotor, in Montenegro, in the southeast. The hinterland, the Dalmatian Zagora, ranges from fifty kilometers in width in the north to just a few kilometers in the south. The Dalmatian dog gets its name from Dalmatia. In antiquity the Roman province of Dalmatia was much larger than the present-day region, stretching from Istria to historical Albania. Dalmatia signified not only a geographical unit, but it was an entity based on common culture and settlement types. Secondly, Dalmatia came before the dog! The dog got its name from its association with Dalmatia.

Architecture even more obviously exists in relation between space and person, and not in the forms, symbols or images occupaying our perceptual world and interpreting our knowledge, truth and reality. Present analysis of Plečnik's architecture and particularly his central market in Ljubljana, rises a question about relation between Plečnik's formal expression and the spatial concepts that characterize his architecture. Analysis tends to explain through the examples that Plečnik's space is not based on dominant formal idea that dictates its parts, but on the idea of an additive concept that grow from complexity and experiential richness of space.

    Sliding toward Slovenia Exiting Rovinj on the excellent Croatian bus service motoring easily through the green countryside of the Istrian peninsular toward Ljubjlana via Italy requires two border crossings. A form of efficiency Yugo style existed as the Slovenian control demanded all bags be brought outside and opened for inspection even though it was a cursory glance at best. Small glimpses of the coastline are visible and in next to no time the bus was in Trieste which is the connection point for Slovenia. Departure time provides space for a whistlestop tour of the city and escape from the collection of drunks domiciled inside the bus station on their weatherproof sipper seats. Tour du Trieste reveals an atypical Italian city in the dreaded grip of siesta severely limit ing spending capacity but nurturing some good homely cafes on statue saturated piazzas. Carbo loading Italian style on the lunchtime special fixed price menu sometime throws up a culinary gem when least expected so the stop was not wasted. In no time the bus was climbing the hilly suburbs above Trieste into alpine vegetation no doubt exhausting the driver as he took a 30 minute unexplained break after 20 minutes driving leaving passengers to sit in the bus and contemplate their navels. The road trip into Slovenia is through green pastures, conifers, neat housing on small plots amidst a background of high mountains, scenic valleys until finally arriving at the bus station not far from the town centre. Ljubjlana in May is full as Europe wakes up to this most unassuming and friendly capital and accommodation roulette commences in the cheaper end of the flashpackers market.

The texts are published in the original language, Nejc Gazvoda in Slovene translation, and in one of the two other official languages Sonja Harter of Vilenica: English or German. Besides the authors from Central Ioana Ieronim Europe, who compete for the Crystal Vilenica Award for the best Andrej Kurkov literary piece in the Almanac, Vilenica also hosts writers from other Meta Kušar countries. These authors are presented in a special section. The Ermis Lafazanovski Almanac also features the winning poems of the Young Vilenica Senadin Musabegoviæ competition.
