  • A. Mihalyi: Meredith Monkl, WAM Casopis, Recenzije, Glazba, Classical

  • Frank Peter Zimmermann / Heinrich Schiff ECM 1912 Honegger / Martinu / Bach / Pintscher / Ravel
ECM Nicolas Gombert ECM 1884 The Hilliard Ensemble Distinguished by the deeply sonorous and often melancholy music he composed for the Court of Emperor Charles V, Gombert has rarely been so well represented on disc as by this Mass and motet selection. … The Hilliard Ensemble perform miracles in bringing out so much detail in Gombert’s lugubrious music. The selection of motets which are interspersed through the mass movements clearly demonstrate their composer’s complete commitment to dense, generally low and invariably highly contrapuntal textures. D. James Ross, Early Music Review Tigran Mansurian ECM 1895 Ars Poetica The Armenian Chamber Choir is a superbly disciplined and well integrated ensemble … There is a resonance in the Armenian language which you just do not get in Western choirs, or even Russian ones for that matter – a certain glottal openness which gives the music a timeless, ageless quality. … Lovers of beautifully composed choral music should treat themselves to this recording, and those seeking to discover a new name will not be disappointed.

  • Inventing Opera As “High Culture”
For many people opera represents (whether this is understood posi- tively or negatively) the very embodiment of “high culture.”Yet lately there have been signs that its status is changing, as opera becomes more and more a feature of everyday cultural life.1 What I want to explore in this chapter is whether these changes have now made it possible to describe opera as popular culture. Inventing Opera as “High Culture” In order to fully understand what has been happening to opera in recent years, I think it is first necessary to examine something of the history of opera. Traditionally, opera is said to have been invented in the late sixteenth century by a group of Florentine intellectuals known as the Camerata.2 However, according to musicologist Susan McClary, Despite the humanistic red herrings proffered by Peri, Caccini [members of the Camerata], and others to the effect that they were reviving Greek performance practices, these gentlemen knew very well that they were basing their new reciting style on the improvisatory practices of con- temporary popular music. Thus the eagerness with which the humanist myth was constructed and elaborated sought both to conceal the vulgar origins of its techniques and to flatter the erudition of its cultivated patrons. (McClary, 1985: 154–5) Although there may be some dispute over the intellectual origins of opera, there is general agreement about its commercial beginnings. “Expecting Rain”: Opera as Popular Culture? 33 Significantly, the opera house was the “first musical institution to open its doors to the general public” (Zelochow, 1993: 261). The first opera house opened in Venice in 1637: it presented “commercial opera run for profit .

Dear Customer, DG and Decca have pulled out all the operatic stops this month, with three very special releases featuring some of their best soloists. Mexican tenor Javier Camarena’s ‘Contrabandista’ recital marks the first issue in the ‘Mentored by Bartoli’ series on Decca - a partnership between Decca and the Cecilia Bartoli Music Foundation. Arias by Verdi are the focus of DG’s new recording from Russian bass, Ildar Abdrazakov, conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin, who also happens to take the lead in a brand new recording of Die Zauberflote, the sixth in DG’s current series of Mozart operas. It is the latter that we have been particularly taken by, so you will find it as our ‘Disc of the Month’ for August, as well as being at a very special price as part of our new DG & Decca Opera Sale (found on pp.13-18). Another recording which was a strong contender for the ‘Disc of the Month’ position, was Mahan Esfahani’s performance of Bach’s Toccatas on a rather fabulous harpsichord - Hyperion have done a sterling job in capturing Esfahani’s consummate skill in interpreting these works. Other highlights for August include the second instalment in The Illyria Consort’s recordings of sonatas by Carbonelli; hi-fi Holst and Elgar from the Bergen Philharmonic and Andrew Litton on BIS; lesser-known Beethoven from the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, who provide us with a gripping performance of Beethoven’s complete incidental music to Egmont (Ondine); plus we have Messiaen from Tom Winpenny (Naxos), Handel from the Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin (Pentatone), and Brahms/Dvorak from Jakub Hrusa and the Bamberger Symphoniker (Tudor), to name but a few.

  • String Quartets Dmitri Shostakovich
Rezension für: Andreas Willwohl Dmitri Shostakovich: The Complete String Quartets Dmitri Shostakovich 5CD aud 21.411 schallplattenmann.de 04.04.2011 (Sal Pichireddu - 2011.04.04) Dmitri Shostakovich / Mandelring Quartett "Complete String Quartets" Dmitri Shostakovich / Mandelring Quartett Full review text restrained for copyright reasons. theartsdesk.com Saturday, 30 April 2011 (Graham Rickson - 2011.04.30) Classical CDs Weekly: Górecki, Haydn, Shostakovich, Second Viennese School Shostakovich: Complete String Quartets Mandelring Quartet (Audite) These are wonderful performances. The Mandelring Quartet don’t overplay the savagery and shocks - their approach is lyrical, sane and effortlessly musical. They can deploy the big guns when necessary – the second movement of the 10th quartet is a good example – but they always care about the line, the musical argument. You’re not lectured or shouted at, but drawn in. Shostakovich’s quartets plot an interesting trajectory, from the superficially lightweight First of 1938 to the death-haunted 15th completed in 1974. The last works have their profoundly depressing moments, but these players accentuate the glimpses of light – the powerful, defiant major coda to the 12th or the radiant harmonic language of the 14th. There’s a body and lack of shrillness to the string sound – helped by nicely nourished viola and cello tone, so that the more aggressive climaxes don’t sound like offcuts from Bernard Hermann’s Psycho soundtrack. It’s hard to single out the highlights, but both the Fifth and Sixth quartets with their blend of desperation, wistfulness and hard-earned joy nearly reduced me to tears. I was gripped as these players moved from the Third quartet’s jaunty Fawlty Towers-style opening to far darker, more probing territory.
