  • Inventing Opera As “High Culture”
For many people opera represents (whether this is understood posi- tively or negatively) the very embodiment of “high culture.”Yet lately there have been signs that its status is changing, as opera becomes more and more a feature of everyday cultural life.1 What I want to explore in this chapter is whether these changes have now made it possible to describe opera as popular culture. Inventing Opera as “High Culture” In order to fully understand what has been happening to opera in recent years, I think it is first necessary to examine something of the history of opera. Traditionally, opera is said to have been invented in the late sixteenth century by a group of Florentine intellectuals known as the Camerata.2 However, according to musicologist Susan McClary, Despite the humanistic red herrings proffered by Peri, Caccini [members of the Camerata], and others to the effect that they were reviving Greek performance practices, these gentlemen knew very well that they were basing their new reciting style on the improvisatory practices of con- temporary popular music. Thus the eagerness with which the humanist myth was constructed and elaborated sought both to conceal the vulgar origins of its techniques and to flatter the erudition of its cultivated patrons. (McClary, 1985: 154–5) Although there may be some dispute over the intellectual origins of opera, there is general agreement about its commercial beginnings. “Expecting Rain”: Opera as Popular Culture? 33 Significantly, the opera house was the “first musical institution to open its doors to the general public” (Zelochow, 1993: 261). The first opera house opened in Venice in 1637: it presented “commercial opera run for profit .

  • August 2019 List
August 2019 Catalogue Issue 40 Prices valid until Friday 27 September 2019 unless stated otherwise 0115 982 7500 The Wiener Staatsoper, celebrating its 150th birthday this year [email protected] Your Account Number: {MM:Account Number} {MM:Postcode} {MM:Address5} {MM:Address4} {MM:Address3} {MM:Address2} {MM:Address1} {MM:Name} 1 Welcome! Dear Customer, DG and Decca have pulled out all the operatic stops this month, with three very special releases featuring some of their best soloists. Mexican tenor Javier Camarena’s ‘Contrabandista’ recital marks the first issue in the ‘Mentored by Bartoli’ series on Decca - a partnership between Decca and the Cecilia Bartoli Music Foundation. Arias by Verdi are the focus of DG’s new recording from Russian bass, Ildar Abdrazakov, conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin, who also happens to take the lead in a brand new recording of Die Zauberflote, the sixth in DG’s current series of Mozart operas. It is the latter that we have been particularly taken by, so you will find it as our ‘Disc of the Month’ for August, as well as being at a very special price as part of our new DG & Decca Opera Sale (found on pp.13-18). Another recording which was a strong contender for the ‘Disc of the Month’ position, was Mahan Esfahani’s performance of Bach’s Toccatas on a rather fabulous harpsichord - Hyperion have done a sterling job in capturing Esfahani’s consummate skill in interpreting these works. Other highlights for August include the second instalment in The Illyria Consort’s recordings of sonatas by Carbonelli; hi-fi Holst and Elgar from the Bergen Philharmonic and Andrew Litton on BIS; lesser-known Beethoven from the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, who provide us with a gripping performance of Beethoven’s complete incidental music to Egmont (Ondine); plus we have Messiaen from Tom Winpenny (Naxos), Handel from the Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin (Pentatone), and Brahms/Dvorak from Jakub Hrusa and the Bamberger Symphoniker (Tudor), to name but a few.

  • Tenor Luciano Pavarotti Dead at 71
Tenor Luciano Pavarotti dead at 71 Story Highlights NEW: Bono: "A great volcano of a man" Manager Terri Robson says Pavarotti died after battling pancreatic cancer He died at 5 a.m. at his home in Modena, Italy, the city of his birth Singer retired from staged opera in 2004; diagnosed with cancer in 2006 (CNN) -- Famed opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who appeared on stage with singers as varied as opera star Dame Joan Sutherland, U2's Bono and Liza Minnelli, died Thursday in Italy after suffering from pancreatic cancer, manager Terri Robson said in a statement. He was 71. "The great tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, died today at 5:00 a.m. at his home in Modena, the city of his birth," according to Robson. "The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterized his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness." The portly singer retired from staged opera in 2004, but was on a "farewell tour" of concerts when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2006 and underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumor. Although the remaining concerts of his tour were canceled, his management said that he hoped to resume the tour in 2007. But in early August, Pavarotti was hospitalized in Modena with a fever and released 17 days later after undergoing diagnostic tests. Pavarotti is survived by his wife, Nicoletta Mantovani, and a daughter, Alice, along with three grown daughters by his first wife, Adua Veroni, whom he divorced in 2000, and a granddaughter.

  • March 2017 List
March 2017 Catalogue Issue 11 Prices valid until Wednesday 26 April 2017 unless stated otherwise 0115 982 7500 Cover photo taken from BIS BIS9048 ‘Sibelius: Kullervo’ (Minnesota Orchestra/Vanska), featuring ‘Kullervo [email protected] Goes To War’ by Axel Gallén (tempera, 1901) 1 Welcome! Dear Customer, Welcome to our bumper March catalogue! Along with a good crop of new releases, we have a particularly large selection of titles on special offer this month, including hundreds of new reductions from DG and Decca. Before we go into more detail, we need to get the bad news out of the way. As mentioned last month, we have unfortunately reached a point where we need to slightly increase our UK postage charges. We try to avoid doing this too often (the last time was January 2014), but with Royal Mail costs increasing significantly each year, it is impossible to absorb this indefinitely. As most people seem to appreciate the simplicity of a flat-fee charge, we are sticking with this approach, but increasing the amount to £2 and increasing the free-postage minimum to £50. Different companies structure their postage charges in a variety of ways, but we believe we remain competitive and hope to be able to hold it at this level for a number of years to come. New releases we would like to highlight for you include the latest issue in the Sokolov-DG partnership, this time featuring concertos by Rachmaninov and Mozart; a two-disc set entitled ‘Hommage a Boulez’ from Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra; piano concertos by Beach, Chaminade

  • “Ah Mes Amis Quel Jour De Fete”
