Dear Customer, Welcome to our bumper March catalogue! Along with a good crop of new releases, we have a particularly large selection of titles on special offer this month, including hundreds of new reductions from DG and Decca. Before we go into more detail, we need to get the bad news out of the way. As mentioned last month, we have unfortunately reached a point where we need to slightly increase our UK postage charges. We try to avoid doing this too often (the last time was January 2014), but with Royal Mail costs increasing significantly each year, it is impossible to absorb this indefinitely. As most people seem to appreciate the simplicity of a flat-fee charge, we are sticking with this approach, but increasing the amount to £2 and increasing the free-postage minimum to £50. Different companies structure their postage charges in a variety of ways, but we believe we remain competitive and hope to be able to hold it at this level for a number of years to come. New releases we would like to highlight for you include the latest issue in the Sokolov-DG partnership, this time featuring concertos by Rachmaninov and Mozart; a two-disc set entitled ‘Hommage a Boulez’ from Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra; piano concertos by Beach, Chaminade and Howell in the 70 volume of Hyperion’s ‘Romantic Piano Concerto’ series (see ‘Disc of the Month’ below); piano works by Bartok, also on Hyperion, performed by Francois-Frederic Guy and friends; four discs from Chandos, all well-worth exploring and including a two-disc (priced as one) selection of songs from Sir Arthur Sullivan; more Sibelius from Osmo Vanska and the Minnesota Orchestra on BIS; two new recordings of Bach’s St John Passion from Apollo’s Fire/Sorrell (Avie) and Les Musiciens du Louvre/Minkowski (Erato); and finally, a selection of fascinating archive reissues from both Australian Eloquence and Dutton Epoch. The new DG and Decca special offers are split into two sections: over 600 titles from the core of their back-catalogue, mostly now just £6.50 each, plus a selection of nearly 300 ‘Duos and Trios’, most now priced at £7.50 each. We also have a selection of titles reduced from Warner/Erato, including the ‘Das Alte Werk’, ‘Veritas x2’ and ‘Original Jackets’ series, plus the complete catalogues of Avie, Sterling, NMC, The Barbirolli Society alongside a selection of opera recordings from Naxos and a small promotion celebrating the 70 birthday of violinist, Gidon Kremer. Amy Beach (1867-1944) was self-taught as a composer, but the quality and individuality Offer available while stocks last. of her work was quickly recognized. Work on the piano concerto began in 1897 and it was clearly intended not only as a major composition, but also as a way for Beach to return to the concert platform that she missed so acutely. The Concertstück by Cecile Chaminade (1857-1944) begins in stirring style: the kinship with Wagner’s Flying Dutchman is unmistakable, and throughout the work some influence of Wagner and Liszt is apparent. The end result is a piece of considerable individuality, combining zestful energy and a rich seam of lyrical melody, affirming the enduring value of Chaminade’s larger works. Dorothy Howell (1898-1982) studied at the Royal Academy of Music, where she was taught by Tobias Matthay and John Blackwood McEwen. Her musical voice is both distinctive and cosmopolitan, with influences including Richard Strauss. The concerto is written in a single span, comprising three sections, and its rediscovery in the twenty-first century is long overdue. 2 PRIORITY NEW RELEASES DG and Decca Rachmaninov Hommage a Boulez Piano Concerto no.3 Celebrating the Mozart association between Piano Concerto K488 Boulez and Barenboim Sokolov, Tortelier, West-Eastern Divan Pinnock Orchestra £13.95 inc bonus DVD £13.95 DG 479 7015 due 10/3 DG 479 7160 2CD due 10/3 For Seasons Chopin Vivaldi plus arrs by Works for Piano Max Richter, Aphex and Orchestra Twins, Nils Frahm etc Lisiecki, NDR Hope Elbphilharmonie £11.50 Orchester, Urbanski DG 479 6922 £11.50 DG 9479 6824 due 10/3 Decca 483 1531 Jubilate 500 Years of Cathedral Music St Paul's Cathedral Choir £11.50 Decca 483 1317 Beethoven Complete String Quartets 7CD + Blu-ray Audio + bonus DVD due 24/3 Takacs Qt £35.95 DG 479 7021 Karl Bohm Great Recordings 1953-1972 17CD available at £44.95 until 30/3 Bohm £49.95 Wiener Philharmoniker 175 Anniversary Edition £119.95 DG 479 7090 (44CD + 1DVD) due 17/3 175 years ago, on 28 March 1842, Otto Nicolai raised the baton for the first ever concert of a new ensemble destined to become one of the world’s great orchestras.
