CURRENT AFFAIRS - December 2017 A. PERSONS Rajinder Khanna The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet appointed former RAW Chief as Deputy National Security Adviser without any fixed tenure. He is a 1979 batch Research and Analysis cadre officer. Dinesh K Sarraf The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed former CMD of ONGC Dinesh K Sarraf as new Chairman of Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB). Vijay Rupani Vijay Rupani was sworn in as the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat. Besides him, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel and 18 other ministers (9 in cabinet rank and 10 MoS) also took oath. Jai Ram Thakur BJP’s five-time MLA Jai Ram Thakur was sworn in as the 14th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. Along with him 11 other Ministers were also sworn in. Abhay The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed senior IPS officer Abhay as new Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).He will have tenure till November 18, 2019. The post was lying vacant after R R Bhatnagar took over as DG of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in April this year. He is at present working in CRPF. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe as President of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR). He will succeed scholar and thinker Lokesh Chandra, who was appointed by the NDA government in October 2014 and has completed his three-year-term. Manusi Chillar Miss World 2017 in a contest held in China. The earlier Miss World Crown was won by Miss Priyanka Chopra 17 years back in 2000. Anupam Kher He was recently appointed the Chairman of Film and Television institute of India(FTII). Rajnish Kumar He was appointed Chairman of the State bank of India after the retirement of Mrs Arundhati Rai. Dineshwar Sharma He has been appointed as Interlocutor in Jammu and Kashmir. As the representative of the central government, he has been empowered with authority to hold talks with all the relevant parties in the state. R.N.Ravi Another envoy of the Government of India to hold peace talks with the Naga insurgent groups so that peace and tranquility returns in the north east., Gautam Bambawala He is 1984 batch IAS Officer recently appointed as Envoy to China; before the current assignment he was Ambassador to Pakistan. Pradip Singh Kharela He was appointed as the new CMD of Air India to succeed Loahani who was made the new Chairman of the Railway Board. INTERNATIONAL Priti Patel The British Minister who was sacked by Teresa May for holding two undisclosed meetings with Israeli politicians and she breached protocol by visiting Golan Heights. Jerome Powell President Donald Trump appointed Jerome Powell as the Chairman of the Federal Reserve of the USA. Emmerson Mnangagwa He replaced Robert Mugabe as the President of the African country after the military takeover had created a deadlock in the country resulting in the forced resignation of Mugabe. Robert Mugabe He served as the PM of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987 and then as President from 1987 to 2017. He was the leader of Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) from 1980 to 2017. Sebastian Kurz The Austrian politician who became the Chancellor of Austria in December 2017; he recently angered Angela Merkel by refusing to shelter the refugees. B. MAJOR EVENTS World AIDS Day The World AIDS Day is celebrated every year all over the world on December 1 to raise the public awareness about Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). It also seeks to remember those who have died of the disease by mourning. International Day of Persons with Disabilities The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed every year on December 3 to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development. Navy Day The Indian Navy Day is observed every year on 4 December to celebrate achievements and role of the naval force to the country. This year is 46th Navy Day. Celebrations of Navy Day not only display India’s technological progress but also the maritime achievements of India. Kathakar 7th edition Kathakar: International Storytellers Festival was held at Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi. It was inaugurated by Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju. Hornbill Festival in Kisama President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated 18th edition of the Hornbill Festival at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, Nagaland. The festival coincided with 54th statehood day of Nagaland. XIth Annual Med Tech Summit The XIth Annual MedTech Summit of Biodesign Programme was held in New Delhi. It was organised by Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under the Bio Design Programme. AROGYA 2017 The first International Exhibition and Conference on AYUSH and Wellness sector- AROGYA 2017 was held in New Delhi. It was inaugurated by AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik. It was organised by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in collaboration with Union Ministry of AYUSH and Ministry of Commerce & Industry and Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil). 6th International Tourism Mart 2017 The 6th International Tourism Mart (ITM) 2017 was held in Guwahati, Assam. It was inaugurated by Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi, Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal and Union Tourism minister K L Alphons. The three day program was organized by Union Ministry of Tourism in association with all North Eastern states. World Soil Day The World Soil Day is celebrated every year on 5th of December by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. It aims to communicate messages on the importance of soil quality for food security, healthy ecosystems and human well-being. International Civil Aviation Day The International Civil Aviation Day is observed every year on 7 December across the world to generate and reinforce worldwide awareness of importance of international civil aviation to social and economic development. Indian Armed Force Flag Day The Indian Armed Forces Flag Day is observed every year on December 7 to honour the soldiers, airmen and sailors of India who fought on the borders to safeguard country’s honour. International Anti-Corruption Day The International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) is observed annually across the world on December 9 to raise public awareness of corruption and what people can do to fight it. Observance of the day aims to promote and strengthen measures to prevent and combat corruption more efficiently and effectively. Bodhi Parva: BIMSTEC Festival of Buddhist Heritage India hosted “Bodhi Parva: BIMSTEC Festival of Buddhist Heritage” at New Delhi as part of celebrations of 20 th Anniversary of BIMSTEC. The Festival was inaugurated by Minister of State (IC) for Culture Dr. Mahesh Sharma. ASEAN–India Connectivity Summit The ASEAN–India (Association of Southeast Asian Nations-India) Connectivity Summit (AICS) was held in New Delhi. The theme of summit was ‘Powering Digital and Physical Linkages for Asia in the 21st Century’. It was organized by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in collaboration with AIC (ASEAN-India Centre) and CII (Confederation of Indian Industry). World Human Rights Day The World Human Rights Day (WHRD) is observed every year on December 10 to commemorate adaptation of Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Observance of the day seeks to encourage, support and amplify measures to be taken by everyone to defend human rights. Adivasi Mahotsav 2017 The Adivasi Mahotsav 2017 was held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh to display the rich and diverse tribal traditions of the central state. It was inaugurated by Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh. International Migrants Day The United Nations (UN) International Migrants Day is observed every year on December 18 to recreate awareness about the protection and safety of the migrants. It also recognizes efforts, contributions and rights of workers and members of their families worldwide. Losar Festival The traditional festival of Losar was celebrated in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir to mark the beginning of New Year in this Himalayan region. The 10 day long festival began with illumination of religious and residential places and by visiting monasteries for prayer. Good Governance Day The Good Governance Day (GGD) is celebrated every year in India on December 25 to mark the birthday anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The day was established by Central Government in 2014 to honor Vajpayee by fostering awareness among the people of accountability in government. C. ECONOMY Core sector grows 4.7% in October 2017 According to index of eight core industries released by Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Core sector growth has grown 4.7% in October 2017, matching September 2017 growth, which has been revised down from 5.2%. Petro: Venezuela launches new virtual currency Venezuela has launched its own crypto currency called Petro to circumvent US-led financial sanctions. It will be backed by the country’s vast natural resource reserves. In this regard, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has approved the creation of Blockchain Base observatory to oversee development and rollout of new crypto currency. 5th bimonthly monetary policy review The six member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to maintain status quo in policy rates by keeping repo rate unchanged at 6.0% under liquidity adjustment facility (LAF). 2017 Speed test Global Index India ranked 109th out of 122 countries in the mobile internet speed and 76th out of 133 countries in broadband space in the November 2017 Speed test Global Index (SGI). The index was released by popular internet speed testing service provider Ookla. Legatum Prosperity Index 2017 India was ranked 100th among 149 countries on the list of prosperous countries released as part of The Legatum Prosperity Index 2017.
