In parshat Shlach, the spies compare themselves to grasshoppers, in relation to the giants who lived in Canaan (Numbers 13:33). 7) Lot appears for the first time since parshat Vayera (Deut. 2:9). Esav is referenced multiple times in this parsha, for the first time since parshat Vayishlach (Deut. 2:4). 8) The verse states that the Emorites called Mount Chermon by the name "shenir" (Deut. 3:9). Rashi states that shenir means "snow" in Germanic and Canaanite languages. Interestingly, Mount Chermon today is covered with snow at its high elevation areas. 9) 1) Just prior to the sending of the spies, Moshe tells the Jews not to fear taking possession of the land of Israel (Deut. 1:21). 2) Hashem tells Moshe not to fear fighting Og, the king of Bashan (Deut. 3:2). 3) Moshe commands Yehoshua not to fear the kings in Canaan (Deut. 3:22). 4) When Moshe appoints judges, he tells them not to fear anyone (Deut. 1:16). 10) 1) In parshat Lech Lecha, Hashem tells Avraham not to fear since He will protect him and bless him (Genesis 15:1). 2) In parshat Toldot, Hashem encourages Yitzchak with the words, "Do not fear," after Yitzchak has several disputes with the Pelishtim over the wells (Genesis. 26:24). 3) In parshat Vayigash, Hashem assures Yaakov on his way down to Egypt not to fear leaving Canaan (Genesis 46:3). 11) Devarim (Deut. 1:1), Numbers (Deut. 1:1), Echa (Deut. 1:12), Yehoshua (Deut. 1:38), Vayikra (Deut. 3:14), and Melachim (Deut. 3:21).     LEON SAKKAL THE ARCHITECT OF THE SYRIAN COMMUNITY Marking 10 Years since the Passing of our Leader Hacham Baruch Ben Haim, zt”l On 24 Iyar, 5765 (June 2, 2005), our community mourned the loss of our revered leader and teacher, Hacham Baruch Ben Haim, zt”l. For 56 years, Hacham Baruch built, nurtured, and steered the Syrian community of Greater New York towards the prominent status it holds today. Now, 10 years later, we take a step back to appreciate the rabbi’s extraordinary life and accomplishments, and the enduring imprint which he has left upon us and all of Sephardic Jewry.     To the esteemed members of the Orthodox Union’s executive committee and board of directors, in response to your questions: 1) Is it halakhically acceptable for a synagogue to employ a woman in a clergy function? 2) What is the broadest spectrum of professional roles within a synagogue that may be performed by a woman?1 These inquires must be answered in a way that goes beyond a simple yes or no, permitted or prohibited. The issue of female clergy is complex, and touches upon not only the dictates of halakhah, but also upon fundamental issues in our hashkafat olam. Indeed, the questions relate to the philosophy of the halakhic process itself. Furthermore, we recognize that this issue is emotionally charged; some perceive limitations on women’s roles and titles as barriers to full involvement in the Orthodox community, while others view the lifting of traditional gender distinctions in ritual as representing a rejection of the mesorah. This tension pits egalitarianism, a central value of modernity, against a time-honored tradition that clearly speaks of equally valued, yet different, roles for men and women. In contemporary discourse, rabbinic discussion of these issues often appear to focus primarily on what functions performed by men are inappropriate for women. By contrast, our intention is to define halakhic parameters with the goal of clarifying practical roles that women can and, depending on the particular kehillah, indeed should, play in our community institutions. The following represents our collective opinion. For the reasons noted above, we will begin with an outline of halakhic methodology. Halakhic Methodology There are three primary factors that may be considered by a halakhic decisor when developing a ruling: legal sources, precedent, and a relevant halakhic ethos.
