2 About A&K Railroad Materials

About A&K Railroad Materials A&K Railroad Materials, Inc. began in Oakland, California when a young man with unusual business savvy recognized an opportunity. It was 1959. Nineteen-year-old Kern Schumacher learned that thousands of railroad ties were about to be removed from the lower deck of the Oakland Bay Bridge. He persuaded a Bay-area salvage expert to help him organize the A&K Tie Company. Kern soon found himself co-owner of the largest supply of used railroad ties in the country. More than fifty years later A&K Railroad Materials is a leading supplier of new and used track materials. Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, A&K has sales offices and a network of storage and distribution facilities strategically located throughout the United States. Together, these offices and inventory locations maintain an extensive and comprehensive inventory of new, relay, and reconditioned rail and track materials across the nation.

8 Ordering Rail

A&K has designed this catalog section as an aid in planning, selecting and ordering rail and other track materials (OTM). Rail sections are the standard AREMA, A.S.C.E., A.R.E.A., and A.R.A. sections except where otherwise indicated.

How To Order Rail Rail Section Identity To insure quick shipment of rail to your exact The weight and type of most rails can be identified by specifications, furnish the following information to A&K: referring to the dimensional diagrams in this section.

A. Rail section identity If a special section is not listed or identifying the rail is 1. Weight – lbs. per yard difficult, simply place a piece of paper against the rail end and impress its outline into the paper by pressing against 2. Section – AREMA, A.S.C.E., A.R.A., A.R.E.A., etc. the rail edges. A&K can match or adapt rail to existing B. Length trackage with this information C. Drilling and bolt hole size D. New or relay 1. If new, specify type – standard strength, head-hardened, low alloy, etc. 2. If relay, specify class – see page 8

Rail Drilling D. Diameter of bolt hole (or bolt size). E. Elevation of bolt hole (center-line of bolt hole Important: Specify the following dimensions to correctly above base) if rail is not a standard section. match existing trackage:

A. Distance from end of rail to center-line of first hole. B. Center-line of first hole to center-line of second hole. C. Center-line of second hole to center-line of third hole (where 6-hole joint bars are required)

How To Order Joint Bars A&K maintains a complete inventory of splice bars, full toe angle bars, and toeless joint bars for most standard tee rail and crane rail sections.

Joint bars must be punched to match rail drilling accurately to insure proper rail alignment. Please give A&K the following dimensions:

D. Size of bolt hole (or bolt diameter). F. Center-line of first hole to center-line of second hole. G. Center-line of second hole to center-line of third hole. H. Distance between center-lines of two center holes. Splice Bar Full Toe Toeless Angle Bar Joint Bar Call an A&K rail and track specialist if you encounter any problems in identifying your trackage or components. A&K’s experienced team will assist you in the identification of your needs to assure prompt, economical delivery.

45 Insulated Joints

Poly-Insulated Joints A&K insulated rail joints feature a tough polyurethane insulation bonded to micro- alloy joint bar sections. The one piece polyurethane/steel structure provides reliable circuit isolation and maintains electrical and physical stability in heavy rail traffic under varying environmental conditions. A&K’s polyurethane is a specially formulated compound highly resistant to deterioration by ultra-violet, ozone, weathering abrasion, or the shock and flexing stresses of heavy rail traffic. The dense polyurethane material is firmly bonded to the entire rail joint and provides superior insulation between the joint and the rail. The result is a rigid unitized structure designed to withstand years of heavy- duty service, provide high-dielectric isolation for signal circuits, and require little or no maintenance. A&K insulated rail joints meet all AREMA specifications; test data is available upon request. Designs are available for rail sizes up to 141 pounds. When ordering, please specify rail size, rail drilling, bolt diameter, and elevation.

Bonded Insulated Joints A&K Bonded Insulated Joints are manufactured in accordance with AREMA specifications. Typical joint lengths range from 13’ to 40’, and we can supply longer custom lengths to meet your requirements as needed. We assemble our bonded insulated joints with both new and relay rail in a variety of sections. Other options include standard fiberglass or high strength Kevlar insulation, 6 hole 36” or 8 hole 48” bonded insulated joint bars and hex bolts with hex nuts or huck pins. Standard end post is 3/16” thick for a 90 deg straight cut. Custom end posts can be supplied as well. When ordering, supply rail section, type of rail, length of joint, stagger, type of fastener, type of insulation, thickness and orientation of end post.

Frog number or angle on center line of frog) to its width, or the number of 3. Weight and section of rail inches in length necessary for it to spread one inch in 4. Overall length width. For example, a No. 8 frog spreads 1 in 8, a No. 10 frog spreads 1 in 10, etc. All measurements should be taken on the gauge lines. To determine the number of a frog, measure across Frog Number Frog Angle the frog point at place (A) where the distance 5 11o - 25’ - 16” between the gauge lines is an even number of 6 9o - 31’ - 38” inches. Glidex® Glidex® is used for lubrication of railroad switches, slide plates, throw rods, movable bridges, overhead crane rails, couplers and more. Glidex® is non-flammable, non-corrosive, safe to use and provides long-term effectiveness. Glidex® is not water soluble and therefore cannot be washed away by rainfall or melting snow. It provides an adherent barrier that will keep metal components continuously lubricated and offer protection against mild ice formation. Glidex® is a specially formulated synthetic lubrication that is quite fluid, yet remains in place once it becomes static. This "flowability" enables Glidex® to be easily applied by brushing, pouring, or spraying with a handsprayer. The treated surface is environmentally friendly and will not stain surrounding surface areas.
