THE SEQUIOA & KINGS CANYON EXPERIENCE Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks are world renowned for breathtaking views and rugged terrain. The parks boast the largest tree in the world, the deepest canyon in America and the tallest peak in the lower 48 United States. Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks spans 865,964 acres, which is 104,696 more acres than Yosemite National Park. However, it was for their awe-inspiring natural beauty that John Muir once called them “a rival to Yosemite.” Since 1998, Delaware North Companies (DNC) Parks & Resorts has been the concessioner operating overnight accommodations, food and beverage, and retail services in Sequoia. As of November 2013, the company manages the hospitality operations in Kings Canyon, too. The parks were officially established in 1890. The area now known as Kings Canyon started out as General Grant National Park to protect the General Grant Grove of giant sequoias, before being expanded and renamed in 1940. To enjoy the parks’ many natural attractions, visitors can book accommodations at Wuksachi Lodge in Sequoia, or Grant Grove Village, John Muir Lodge, and Cedar Grove Village in Kings Canyon. Wuksachi Lodge encompasses a cluster of buildings set some 7,200 feet above sea level, with panoramic views of the High Sierra and the peaks of the Great Western Divide. The lodge’s 102 guest rooms are housed in three detached buildings tucked among the tall pines and connected by paved footpaths that lead to a central building where a full-service restaurant, bar and lounge, retail and ski shop, guest registration, public rooms, and conference facilities are located. Beautifully crafted of cedar and stone, Wuksachi has all of the characteristics of historic buildings in its sister parks such as Yosemite and Yellowstone. Grant Grove Village’s rustic cabins are located three miles from the Big Stump entrance to the park along Highway 180 and within walking distance of the General Grant Tree and grove of giant sequoias. With six styles of cabin, all have convenient access to nearby dining and other amenities such as a gift shop, coffee shop, ATM, and grocery store. John Muir Lodge is the jewel of Grant Grove Village. Its 36 rooms feature an enchanting mountain décor and can accommodate weddings, meetings, and small conferences. The lodge is also within walking distance to the General Grant Tree and is a quick drive to a spectacular vista overlooking Kings Canyon called Panorama Point. A scenic 35-mile drive east of Grant Grove, visitors descend into Kings Canyon and arrive at Cedar Grove and its towering cliffs, tumbling waterfalls, meandering meadows, and powerful Kings River. The seasonal Cedar Grove Village is home to an 18-room lodge, cabins, a restaurant, market, and gift shop for those who want to experience the spectacular Yosemite-like terrain of the area. Popular among hikers and kayakers from late spring into fall, the road to Cedar Grove and the lodge close for the season each winter. DNC Parks and Resorts at Sequoia & Kings Canyon P.O.
