Such communities are notified by a Presidential Order. For the purpose of the 1971 census the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes lists (modification) Order, 1956, as amended from time fO time to reflect jurisdictional and other changes were adopted. The- data thus collected were processed manually and a set of special tables for the schedUled castes and scheduled tribes has been prepared in the hope that these will be of value for the planning and implementation of welfare measures in respect of these socially and economically handicapped communities. The special tables are presented in two volumes [Part V-A (i) scheduled castes and Part V-A (ii) scheduled tribes] conforming to the pattern adopted in the 1961 census. The data were processed manually in the first instance at the various state/union territory directorates of census operations. These were scrutinised and finalised at the central tabulation unit of the Registrar General's Office under the supervision of ShriS. C. Srivastava, Assistant Central Tabulation Officer. I express my appreciation of the pains taken by all those who were engaged in the task of preparing these tables.
