Gerretsen was a renowned freelance photographer who had previously worked in Chile and Vietnam when he got the call from Coppola, who was looking for a combat photographer for a war movie. Given unprecedented access to the film’s stars, extras, crew, and legendary behind-the-scenes drama he spent six months in the Philippines, shooting thousands of images. Culled from that archive, these full-color photographs offer an intimate glimpse of the turmoil and excitement of a Hollywood spectacle rising out of the unpredictable climate of the Philippine rainforest. Capturing the star power of Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, and Dennis Hopper, as well as the sprawling sets, he takes us into the beauty of the Southeast Asian jungle and shows us how its inhabitants were incorporated into the filming. Throughout the book, Gerretsen’s astute reflections of his experience on set are as fascinating as his photography. While Apocalypse Now remains one of the most critically acclaimed movies of all time, the making of the film is equally legendary.

  • The Caretaker: Ambiguity from Page to Stage
Volume 2 Issue 4 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES AND March 2016 CULTURAL STUDIES ISSN 2356-5926 The Caretaker: Ambiguity from page to stage Mariem Souissi Faculty of Arts and Humanities University of Sousse, Tunisia [email protected] Abstract This paper will rivet on the specific techniques used by Clive Donner, the director of The Caretaker movie to underline the ambiguity on the screen stage. It is by analyzing the mise-en scene that we begin to see what are the meanings intended by the director. In other words, analyzing the camera movements, the zooming in and the zooming out , paying attention to the style of actors ‘performance and how objects are placed in the scene would highlight the artistically elusive characteristics of the movie. The editing within the film and the spectators ‘receptions are also very important to grasp the meanings of the work. Keywords: The Caretaker, Mise-en Scene, ambiguity, Filmic techniques, Performance. http://www.ijhcs.com/index.php/ijhcs/index Page 1084 Volume 2 Issue 4 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES AND March 2016 CULTURAL STUDIES ISSN 2356-5926 It is noteworthy to mention that in staging a filmic scene, any minor detail becomes meaningful as soon as it is captured by the camera, which is not the case in stage theatre. Film Studies assert that in order to study a film and deconstruct its meaning, we should pay attention to its mise en scene and examine how the film is constructed and shaped (Nelmes 14). In his book Introduction to Film Studies: Critical Approaches, Richard Dyer defines Film Studies as an academic field of study that approaches films theoretically, historically and critically.

  • Reviewer Response to Pinter's the Caretaker
UDK 821.111.09-2 Pinter H.(497.4) REVIEWER RESPONSE TO PINTER'S THE CARETAKER Tomaz Onic Abstract The Caretaker is one of Harold Pinter's early plays. It was an immediate success, and it drew the attention of many critics, who started judging this contemporary British playwright's works from a new perspective. Therefore, many scholars consider The Caretaker an important turning point in the reception of Pinter's works. The play has seen many stagings all over the world, two of them in Slovenia. This article sets out its most prominent productions, analyses and comments on their critical reviews, and compares these to the response to Pinter in Slovene cultural space. International productions of The Caretaker Harold Pinter's The Caretaker1 was first published in 1959 together with four other plays in the second volume of the author's collected works. It was premiered in April 1960 at the Arts Theatre in London and moved to the Duchess Theatre a month after the first production. This early play by Harold Pinter was enthusiastically ac cepted by the general public and the critics. It was his sixth theatre piece, presented only three years after his first two plays, The Room and The Birthday Party. The first reviews of the former were favourable, but, surprisingly, this was not the case with The Birthday Party, which is today one of his most frequently staged pieces; some even number it among the best achievements of contemporary British theatre. Its first pro duction ran only a week, and it took most of the critics some time to realise that there was more to it than mere »verbal anarchy«, as Milton Shulman (1958) labelled what later became known as typical pinteresque dialogue.

  • Increasing Contribution of News Photo Agencies Into Journalism by Evolving Technology
The Online Journal of Communication and Media – April 2015 Volume 1, Issue 2 INCREASING CONTRIBUTION OF NEWS PHOTO AGENCIES INTO JOURNALISM BY EVOLVING TECHNOLOGY Assist.Prof. Dr. Kerim KARAGÖZ1, Prof.Dr. Özer KANBUROĞLU2 1,2Kocaeli University, Turkey [email protected],[email protected] Abstract:The publication of news photos in the journals directly begun in the beginning of 20th Century although news photos had emerged as a profession in the last quarter of 19th century. At the same time, the photos taken immediately distributed among and used in different media organs. In the beginning, the news were distributed by using a specific technique in the emerging agencies, before the photos. The economic reasons were determining factors at establishment of the news agencies in different European countries and in Northern America. Before that, hand-written commercial news letters were disseminated by copying them again by hand-writing. The qualified news coming on time in commercial and capitalist system became important as much as production. Thus, the new circles and groups emerged which were ready to pay for reaching quickly to news. When those increased in numbers, it was realized that the dissemination of news to large areas could be a profitable job. Consequently, the ‘news agencies’ as institutions emerged as a response to a rising need. Today, the news agencies with specific responsibilities in the global communication network just transmit the news and visual material. But some agencies only work on the photos. These agencies transmit photos to all news centers in a short time by connecting with a contracted photographer in that region, or in a region close to the event.

Title: What's New Pussycat His psychoanalyst Dr. Fassbender can't help him either since he's busy courting one of his patients who in turn longs for Michael. A catastrophe appears on the horizon as all the characters check into the Chateau Chantelle hotel for the weekend not knowing of each other's presence. Written by Robert Zeithammel. Some have "analyzed" this movie with the heavy, combat-boot tone of the cerebral and moral second-millennium spirit. They say it belongs to the past, the bad bad bad 60s, full of irresponsibility and partying, sexual license and depravity. Well I say HA! Forget all those mostly young! It is colorful, full of joy and beautiful people, unpretentious and charming. And in the end, the guy gets the girl and they get married. As a young boomer, watching this is like slipping into Hush Puppies. You may say what you want about or against the "guilty" innocence of that era, but it sure was comfortable! I miss those times. And a note for the moderns: we were not that innocent, we knew that some of this was dangerous ground Looking for some great streaming picks? Check out some of the IMDb editors' favorites movies and shows to round out your Watchlist.

It is important for the development of artists and designers from the Netherlands to be able to measure themselves against international standards. It is also important to facilitate and encourage cooperation between Dutch organizations and partners abroad. In 2008, a new crop of Dutch artists and designers once again attracted inter- national attention. Art from the Netherlands was presented in a record number of countries. The Mondriaan Foundation is pleased that there has been a consistent increase in applications from Latin America, Asia and Africa. Mondriaan Foundation International Activities 2008 – This is partly due to the Mondriaan Foundation orientation visits to these areas and reflects developments in visual arts across the world. This annual report reviews the Mondriaan Foundation’s international activities in 2008. The impact of COVID-19 means that this year’s perspective is gloomier. Over the summer we initiated a redundancy programme for our non-academic staff in response to the financial impact and the operational consequences of the pandemic. We also spent a great deal of time planning for the return of students for Michaelmas Term with as much attention to sustaining the positive aspects of their experience as public health restrictions will allow. Unsurprisingly there is an atmosphere of uncertainty about how the external context will influence what happens. We recognise that we are unlikely to see a full return to anything like our previous normality in the course of this academic year. However, I do need to record changes in the Fellowship in the usual way.
