Giorgio Rivetti has been drawn to wine since he was six years old, growing up in Piedmont in Northwestern Italy, often taking a nip of what was being poured. By the time he was a teenager he was enrolled in a formal wine program. His father Giuseppe Rivetti had grown grapes and made small amounts of wine. That changed in 1977 when the Rivetti family — Giuseppe, Giorgio and his brothers Bruno and Carlo — began La Spinetta. They focused on Moscato d’Asti, a slightly bubbly, sweet dessert wine made from the Muscat grape. In 1985 they started making their first red wine, Cà di Pian, from Barbera grapes. And the growth continued. In 1995 they purchased the Gallina vineyard and began producing Nebbiolo wines in Barbaresco. In 2000 they entered the prestigious region of Barolo, building a winery at the Campè vineyard. The winery expanded beyond Piedmont in 2001 when they began producing wines in Tuscany at the Casanova winery. A Methode Champenoise winery was added to the portfolio in 2011 with the purchase of Contratto, located back in Piedmont. Despite the steady growth, the wines of La Spinetta have remained some of Italy’s best. Rivetti, 57, is a passionate and focused winemaker with a strong belief in tradition.

What a party at Pacina! The 30 or so winegrowers from Italy, France, Spain and Slovenia were “small production” (fewer than 50,000 bottles), and the wines were spectacular. From 4pm on, fabulous natural wines flowed, winegrowers let their hair down (as shown above), old friends reunited, new friends met, children of all ages frolicked, plates full of braised wild boar were consumed, and then, we danced to a live rock band under the stars until the wee hours. Giovanna Tiezzi and Stefano Borsa of Pacina, brought the Fêtes Des Vins Naturels from its original home five hours south of Paris in Chassignolles, France to their wine estate outside of Siena with the help of the founders, Harry Lester (a famed London chef) and Ali Johnson (his wife, business partner and maitre d’). They created the fair in 2012 at Auberge de Chassignolles (which they owned and ran for a number of years but put up for sale last year…They still have two other establishments, both in Clermont-Ferrand: Le Saint Eutrope and Le Quillosque.) Outside, summer breezes rustled through the centuries old oak trees that shaded the festivities. A babble of languages…Italian, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and more rippled among the guests.

"Chianti Classico" wine must be obtained from grapes grown in the area of production defined in Art.3 hereunder and must come from vineyards, within the estate framework, characterized by the following ampelographic composition: - Sangiovese, from 80% up to 100%. 2. In addition, red-berried grapes belonging to varieties suitable for cultivation in Tuscany may also be used in the production of the above said wine in the maximum amount of 20% of the area recorded in the vineyard register. Said varieties, registered in the National Register of wine grape varieties, approved by Ministerial Decree dated May 7, 2004 and subsequent amendments, are listed in Attachment 1 of this production code. [email protected] Introduction In the recent past, there has been a long, but steady, abandonment of many grape varieties with the risk of the disappearance of many native vines. However, the need to develop typical wines, i.e. wines attributable to an area of production or to a winery style, has renewed the interest on the rediscovery of these cultivars. Colorino is an ancient Tuscan grape variety traditionally used to improve the colour of Sangiovese wines. Although Colorino production is marginal, according to A.R.T.E.A. in 2008 in Tuscany 347 ha were cultivated with this grapevine (A.R.T.E.A., 2015), it is blended with Sangiovese wine in some of the most important Tuscan DOCG, such as Chianti, Chianti Classico and Nobile di Montepulciano. It is sometimes vinified alone to obtain deeply coloured and tannic wines (Robinson et al., 2013). In addition to Colorino there are other Tuscan native coloured grape varieties: Abrusco and Abrostine. Similarly, they are used to enhance Sangiovese wines colour. Abrusco and Abrostine are rarely cultivated and they are at risk of extinction, since less than 10 ha are dedicated to this grapevine all over Italy. Colorino is included in the register of varieties and clones of vines of the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies (MiPAAF) since 1970 and, currently, seven different clones have been registered.
