  • Classification of NBA Salaries Through Player Statistics
1 Classification of NBA Salaries through Player Statistics William Wu, Kevin Feng, Raymond Li, Kunal Sengupta, Austin Cheng Sports Analytics Group at Berkeley Abstract This research creates a classification-based model that predicts the salary amounts given to NBA players in free agency. This was done through collecting player salary data through Spotrac and player statistics through Basketball Reference. Correlation analysis demonstrated that points, turnovers, VORP, and rebounds created a balanced and effective set of variables for unweighted KNN-classification. The former three statistics were standardized by year, while the latter statistic was standardized by year and position due to underlying relationships between those categories. After classification, the model revealed that volume statistics were most indicative of salaries within lower and mid-level players, while high VORP was common among all players making near-max to max salaries. Using test set data, the model was off by 1.21 clusters on average, but many outliers were due to gross over and undervaluation on the part of the franchises. The model was used to predict salaries for incoming free agents in the 2018 class, with reasonable projections that meet qualitative expectations. 1 Motivation In the NBA, player acquisitions in free agency can often have a critical impact on the fortunes of a franchise. In fact, several dynasties have been built on them - with the Miami Heat of the turn of the decade and the Golden State Warriors of today coming to mind. But perhaps more so than any other form of player acquisition in professional basketball, free agency is a double-edged sword.

  • Payroll Distribution and the Modern Nba
PAYROLL DISTRIBUTION AND THE MODERN NBA Will T. Patterson TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 11, 2017 Daron K. Roberts Plan II, Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation Supervising Professor John Traphagan Department of Religious Studies Second Reader 1 ABSTRACT Author: Will T. Patterson Title: Payroll Distribution in the Modern NBA Supervising Professor: Daron K. Roberts In the past 20 years, the NBA has undergone a dramatic metamorphosis as the league has become defined by cutting-edge innovation, the concentration of superstar players, and the rise of the three-point shot. In this new league, is it still possible for small market teams void of star talent to find success? These teams could look for answers in some surprising case studies of successful NBA teams that have employed more equitable distribution of their total payroll among their players. As a more equitable system makes sense on teams that lack superstars to command max contracts, the question becomes: is it worth it in the absence of a max player or max players to distribute payroll more equitably, or is it more prudent to throw greater amounts of money at more talented available players, building a team in a more traditional way? This thesis argues for the benefits of equitable payroll distribution, especially on small market teams unlikely to attract superstars. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I’d like to thank my supervisor, Daron K. Roberts, for helping me and working with me every step of the way, long before I even began writing this. I’d also like to thank my family for their constant support, but especially my brother, Max, who first helped me to understand why the great wide world of sports matters.

  • Modeling the Labor Economics of the NBA Deepan Modi Northwestern University Advising Professor: David Berger Modi 2
Modi 1 Modeling the Labor Economics of the NBA Deepan Modi Northwestern University Advising Professor: David Berger Modi 2 I. Introduction The National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of the United States’ major athletic leagues and is the top basketball league globally. The league has seen drastic growth recently, more than doubling revenue between 2001 to 20161. It has grown in popularity not only within the domestic United States market, but also abroad in emerging markets such as China. The NBA is also generating alternative revenue streams such as with sponsored uniform patches. Yet according to one report, nearly half of the teams in the NBA lost money during the 2016-2017 before revenue-sharing payouts were given. Even after these payouts, 30% of NBA teams still lost money2. One of the major operating costs for NBA teams are player salaries, which are arguably inefficiently distributed. A team could distribute salary similar to a manner found in other fields, such as medicine. Unlike the NBA’s concept of a maximum salary (a wage ceiling that NBA teams cannot break), there is no steadfast restriction on the maximum amount that an individual can earn in the open labor market. Yet a potential drawback of this strategy could be a concentration of wealth to the top players, leaving very little in salary for the average NBA player. This phenomenon has been visible in the U.S. recently3, as there has been a significant rise in income inequality between the upper income brackets and the middle class. Nevertheless, a meritocratic salary distribution could be well-received by players, as they can instantly point towards a production-related metric such as points per game to qualify their value.
