PRESTON INGRAM COACHING FILE

Head Coach 2nd Season Alma Mater: Evangel University, 2004 Overall Record: 19-18 Previous College Coaching Experience: Evangel (2004-10), Avila (2010-13), Pittsburgh St. (2013-17), Angelo St. (2016-18)

On May 30, 2019, Missouri Baptist University Associate Vice President & Director of Athletics Dr. Thomas Smith announced the hiring of Preston Ingram as the 14th head coach in MBU men’s basketball history.

Ingram inherits a Spartan men’s basketball program that is coming off of its best year ever in 2018-19 finishing 28-5 overall with an American Midwest Con- ference (AMC) regular-season title and a trip to the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Tournament for the first time since 2004-05.

Ingram’s 14-year collegiate coaching career has included successful stints as an assistant at NAIA’s Evangel (Mo.) and Avila (Mo.), as well as Pittsburg State (Kan.) and Angelo State (Texas), both NCAA Division II universities. In addition to his experience at the college level, Ingram is well-connected and has a proven track record as head coach of elite prep and AAU basketball programs.

The Springfield, Mo., native jumpstarted his college coaching career at his alma mater, Evangel University. Ingram had the opportunity to learn and coach alongside NAIA Hall of Famer Steve Jenkins, who ranks fourth all-time in wins among active NAIA coaches. In six years as an assistant, Ingram helped lead the Crusaders to five consecutive 20-win seasons and four NAIA National Tournament appearances – three at the NAIA DII level and one in Evangel’s first season at the NAIA DI level.

Following Evangel, Ingram became an assistant coach at Avila University for three seasons. While there, Ingram recruited and coached Avila University’s first and only NAIA All-American, Sedrick Johnson, and also helped the Eagles to their best record in 10 years.

During his time in Springfield and Kansas City, Ingram also built up his AAU coaching resume. In 1999, Ingram started coaching for the Springfield Rockets, a successful AAU program founded by mentor and Avila head coach at the time, Rodney Perry. Starting in 2007, Ingram began a six-year stint working for MOKAN Elite, one of the nation’s top AAU programs in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL). He coached and worked closely with eventual NBA players such as Willie Cauley-Stein, Anthony Tolliver, Semi Ojeleye and Willie Reed. Between the Springfield Rockets and MOKAN Elite, Ingram helped more than 55 players earn college basketball scholarships at all levels of the NCAA and NAIA.

In 2013, Ingram landed an assistant coaching position at Pittsburg State University and eventually was promoted in his fourth season (2016-17) to the top assistant role on Kevin Muff’s staff. Competing in one of the toughest D2 basketball conferences, Ingram helped the Gorillas grab their first-ever MIAA -con ference tournament championship in 2015. While overseeing the team’s defense, PSU held teams to 65.1 points per game. During his tenure in Pittsburg, Kan., Ingram recruited and coached multiple all-conference award winners including current MBU graduate assistant coach Javis Flynn, along with four Provost’s Award Winners for academic excellence.

Prior to his most recent stops at world-renowned IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and Combine Academy in North Carolina, Ingram coached one season at another successful program in Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. At ASU, Ingram was tasked with guard development, scouting, defense, the strength and conditioning program. He was also key in helping sign D1 transfer Joshua Boutte and one of the top JUCO players in Davion Cole Johnson.

Through the years, Ingram has helped organize numerous individual and team camps, AAU basketball camps, Nike Pre-Draft Camp and Nike Elite 100 Camps. He was also heavily involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) as a motivational speaker and mentor for at-risk kids through a program called UpRising.

As a player at Evangel, Ingram was a student-athlete on the historic 2001-02 NAIA Division II National Championship basketball team. That particular Evan- gel squad posted a 35-1 record while maintaining the No. 1 ranking in the polls the entire season. As a senior, he was a team captain and selected as the Crusaders’ Defensive Player of the Year in 2003-04.

Ingram graduated from Evangel in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing & Management. He later obtained a Master of Science in Human, Health, Performance and Recreation from Pittsburg State in 2016. Preston and his wife, Shanna, have two children: Mya and Sebastian. 2019 MEN’S BASKETBALL

GAME NOTES

LAST TIME OUT...

• The Spartans last outing was back on December 14, a 75-55 loss to St. Ambrose in Davenport, Iowa • MBU shot just 33% from the field and never led in route to its second straight defeat • Brendon Hardy (16) and John Yaeger (12) each hit double figures in points • Yaeger narrowly missed a double-double with eight rebounds • The Spartans’ streak of subpar three-point shooting continued with a 9-34 (26.5%) outing

YAEGER’S HOT START

• John Yaeger has scored in double figures in all seven games he’s played in this year, tying his longest streak of last season (7 games, 1/9-2/6) • Though a smaller sample size early in the season, Yaeger is averaging 16.7 ppg after averaging 10.9 in 2019-20 • The former Lutheran South product has an outside chance to reach 500 rebounds for his career • With 378 entering Thursday and 58 total for this season, Yaeger will need to maintain his season average of around eight per game to become the 15th player in MBU history to reach 500 • Garrison Plummer (2009-13) is the only other Spartan in the last 25 years to record 500 career rebounds

HARDY MOVES UP THE LIST

• Brendon Hardy enters Thursday with 599 career points -- he needs four points to pass Stephen Buckner for 45th on the all-time scoring list • At his current pace, Hardy could join the 1,000 point club in the early part of next season

PREVIEWING COLUMBIA

• Columbia went 6-2 in the non-conference part of its schedule and is coming off a 77-72 win over Missouri Valley at home on Monday • The Cougars are led by junior transfer Tony Burks who is averaging 21.6 ppg • Burks has scored in double figures in all eight games with a career-high of 30 points on 11/9 vs. Central Methodist • Burks is a local product from St. Mary’s HS -- he’s played the last two seasons at Wabash Community College • He averaged 9.4 ppg last season for the Warriors in 30 games • Columbia saw its top six scorers from last season depart -- Jack Fritsche, Beau Washer, and Quinton Brown are CC’s only returners who have played a game so far this season • MBU and Columbia have played two common opponents -- Missouri Valley and Talladega • The Spartans gave Talladega (10-2) one of its two losses back in the season opener on October 30 • The Tornadoes beat Columbia 79-61 in Columbia on November 18 • The Spartans have played Missouri Valley twice, prevailing in both games (89-79 at home, 75-74 on the road) • Columbia knocked off the Vikings (5-7) by five earlier this week • The home team won both matchups between Columbia and Missouri Baptist last season • The Spartans earned their first AMC win under Preston Ingram on December 3, 2019, edging the Cougars 71-66 • The trip to Columbia on February 13 was not as kind -- Columbia won 88-57 as the Spartans shot just 28.6% from the field • Columbia leads the all-time series 49-27 including a 12-game winning streak that began in February 2010 and extended to January, 2016 2020-21 MEN’S BASKETBALL

GAME NOTES (Cont.)

WHAT THE LINEUP/ROTATION MAY LOOK LIKE

• The Spartans used several different starting lineups and rotations in non-conference play -- the three constants seemed to be Yaeger, Hardy, and junior point guard Jadis White • Tyrell Andrews has started four games and come off the bench as the sixth man in the other four • Daishaun Woods has made five starts and is averaging close to 20 minutes per game • With the departure of Ryan Pollard at semester, River Reed will likely see even more minutes after averaging 16.9 in the first eight games • Expect to see more of freshman Mujtaba Alkhaldi as the season goes on -- the 6-9 Fort Zumwalt North product produced his career-high of nine points on November 14 against Missouri Valley

PREVIEWING THIS YEAR’S AMC

• The 2021 version of the AMC consists of just nine teams after Freed-Hardeman, Lindenwood-Belleville, and Park all departed • Park won last year’s regular season AMC title while Freed-Hardeman finished fourth • Harris-Stowe won last season’s AMC tournament, 99-95 over Central Baptist • In the first NAIA national poll of this season, no AMC teams are within the Top 25 • CBC is the only team to be receiving votes -- the Mustangs have losses to No. 16 Faulkner and No. 17 Talladega so far this season and wins against Bacone, Ecclesia (2x), and Crowley’s Ridge • William Woods and Lyon each opted out of all sports in the first semester -- both have played two non-conference games already in January (both are 0-2) • Most of the AMC took the second half of December off but UHSP (1-7) played four games between 12/12 and 1/2 • Harris-Stowe (1-2) and CBC (4-2) both took the month of December off completely • Hannibal (1-7) last played December 10 against St. Ambrose

THIS WEEK’S LEAGUE SCHEDULE

• Lyon at Hannibal - Thursday • Williams Baptist at William Woods - Thursday • (RV) Central Baptist at Health Sciences and Pharmacy - Thursday • Harris-Stowe at William Woods - Saturday • Williams Baptist at Hannibal - Saturday • UHSP at Columbia - Saturday • Lyon at Missouri Baptist - Saturday 2019-20 MEN’S BASKETBALL
