Following the successful development with Bill O'Brien of the Bobcat in the TOM LACK sixties, Tom Lack Catamarans Ltd was formed in 1970. The company is located in a delightful boatyard alongside the quay of the Dorset coastal town of Christchurch. With over 500 Catalacs built and a high proportion still in the hands of the original owners this requirement has been well satisfied by the four boats in the current range. The family feeling has extended to an active owners association which arranges many events including rallies, races and parties which are well-attended. The Catalac 27 (8m) was introduced in 1975 and is the ideal boat for the young family. She sleeps five with one berth in the port hull, two in the saloon and a 4ft 6in double in the master cabin. Sailing performance is remarkable even in the lightest of airs. In no time at all the 8m Catalac 27 can be up on a wave speeding along at 7 knots with more to come if the wind should freshen. Should the wind die altogether, the centrally mounted 25hp outboard long shaft engine will push the boat along at up to 7 knots. A twin inboard engine option is available. The 10m Catalac 34 is built on hard chine, load carrying hulls, on the lines proven by her sister- ships. Her sail plan is a simple Bermudan rig sloop with slab-reefing on the mainsail and Rotostay furling gear for the headsail. She is fitted with a twin installation of Yanmar 2GM diesel engines, each 18hp, so her performance under power is highly satisfactory and her manoeuvrability excellent. The flagship of the fleet is the Catalac 41 (12m). Passage making aboard this fine craft is an exhilarating experience and slab reefing and jib furling gear ensure ease of handling. The illustration above reveals the spaciousness and comfort of the saloon and the galley is comprehensively equipped. The interior steering position is just aft of the saloon with full instrumentation and dual controls for the twin Yanmar diesel engines. The accommodation provides berths for seven in four separate cabins all with a large quantity of storage and hanging lockers. The Catalacs are all equipped with excellent fittings and accessories from the world's leading manufacturers.     CHAPTER 5 Early International Races SAIL AND POWER As fae as the kecords go, the first international race in which a Vancouver yacht took part was in Bellingham Bay, at Fairhaven, on July 4th, 1891. The local contender was the Siren, a five-ton cutter, 30 feet overall, with 1200 square feet of sail area. She was specifically designed and built by Capt. Billy Watts, founder of Vancouver Shipyard, to outrace all comers. She had her workout in Burrard Inlet on Dominion Day 1891, when Watts outsailed Andy Linton's famous speed queen May, which was skippered by the old maestro, Walter Graveley. So Watts sailed to Bellingham with a crew consisting of J. W. McFie, Dr. Bob Mathison, D. S. McKenzie, Dr. C. H. Gatewood and Jim McKay. At Fairhaven he picked up a local man who knew the tides. The six competing boats included the Ariadne of Herreshoff design, considered the queen of Puget Sound waters. The race started at 10 a.m., with a nice westerly breeze of about ten knots. The first leg, six miles, was sailed with a started sheet. Siren jockeyed herself into the windward berth and boomed off with mainsail, two jibs and a club topsail. "After getting in the lead in the first half mile," Captain Watts recalled many years after, "the lug of the mast band at the shrouds pulled out, so I took in the kites. J. W. McFie, carrying a marlinspike and a piece of new one inch manila, went up that shroud like a cat and had the shroud fastened in less than five minutes.

However, this autumn, there has been some quickening of interest, with currently four potential owners known to be considering the market. With some exceptions this year, the requirement still seems to be for suitable boats to restore. Much of the attraction is in seeing one’s rescued hull coming back to beautiful life. I am always pleased to hear of new discoveries, whatever the condition of the boat/remains/relics and answer any queries either by e-mail or telephone (at least up to 2300 hrs, UK time). This year the excitement has been that three top class S & S boats have been recovered and are under major re-build. These are US 81 Goose, perhaps Olin Stephens greatest boat, built in 1938, which is under careful restoration by Peter Hofmann in Puget Sound, North West America; US 80 Djinn, a near sister to Goose, but with an earlier forefoot, which has been bought by Henrik Andersin of Finland, from Dr. Segismondo Cortes in Argentina, who had rescued her and carried out much initial restoration work and, finally, I 64 Ciocca II, a 1948 boa which twice represented Italy in the Olympic Games. In this editorial I particularly want to draw attention to two hitherto unsung heroes of the Six-Metre world who have, with enormous enthusiasm and vision, rescued beautiful six-metres from destruction, when no one else wanted them.
