Desde entonces, y hasta 1865, año en que se estrenó “Tristán e Isol- da”, el compositor vivió un período de arduo trabajo, tanto en la gestación de esta obra como en la preparación de la monumental tetralogía de “El anillo del Nibelungo”. La idea de poner en música la leyenda de “Tristán en Isolda” surgió probable- mente en 1854. The Metropolitan Opera | Streaming HD TRISTÁN E ISOLDA ARGUMENTO En tiempos de leyenda no precisadas, los lugares de acción son un navío y las localidades de Cornualles, al sur de Inglaterra, y Kareol, en la Bretaña medieval. Antes de comenzar la acción misma de la ópera, deben saberse algunos he- chos que facilitarán la comprensión de la trama. Cornualles debe pagar periódicamente tributo a Irlanda. Agobiado por esa situación, el Rey Marke de Cornualles envía a su sobrino Tristán para batirse con el caballero irlandés Morold, prometido de Isolda, y encargado de co- brar el tributo. Tristán le da muerte y envía su cabeza a Irlanda, pero queda mortalmente herido. Sólo la reina de ese país y su hija son capaces de curar al herido. This well-attended event was augmented by photocopies of extended excerpts from the libretto, with frequently amusing commentary by the presenter on Wagner’s influences and foreshadowings of his future operas. February 23 brought the excellent talk by Professor Hans Rudolf Vaget of Smith College. Professor Vaget spoke about Wagner’s English biographer Ernest Newman, whose seminal four-volume book The Life of Richard Wagner has never been surpassed in its thoroughness. In the early part of the twentieth century, the music critic Newman served as a counterbalance to his fellow countryman Houston Stewart Chamberlain, Wagner’s son-in-law and an ardent Nazi. The talk also included aspects of Thomas Mann’s fictional writings on Wagner, as well as the philoso- pher and musician Theodor Adorno and Wagner’s other son-in-law Franz Beidler. On April 19 we learned the extent of Buddhism’s influence on Wagner’s operas thanks to a lecture and book signing by Paul Schofield, author of The Redeemer Reborn: Parsifal as the Fifth Opera of Wagner’s Ring.     Newsletter June 2012 CHAIRMAN’S INTRODUCTION Dear Member, I am sorry it has taken some time to get the newsletter to you but every time we are ready to send it more information comes in and we have more to add. I trust you will find this newsletter particularly interesting. One of the key items of news in this newsletter is the plans for next year, and what an interesting year it promises to be. Following representation from members, we have decided to have a dinner to celebrate the 10 anniversary of the founding of the Society. This will take place on the 20th September at Donnybrook Fair. The room can only accommodate 55 so we would appreciate it if members could inform us if they are going to attend. The cost will be €30 per head excluding wine. It is great to think that in the year of our anniversary there will also be a performance of Tristan und Isolde in Dublin. We, as you read below, have tickets reserved for the first performance. I am also delighted that the Finnish Wagner Society will be organising a trip to attend and we will be using the opportunity to meet them and make them welcome. Our schedule of events this year starts in October with a lecture marking the foundation of the Society by Chris McQuaid, the title being "Wagner Chöre und Umlaute". I trust the range of lectures will provide interesting variety. Next year also sees the production of The Flying Dutchman in Belfast and we will organise a trip to see the performance.
