The diversity of things to do extends from the northern state line to the tip of the Florida Keys. We will attempt to explore the many unique places available to us in this and following issues, starting our journey in the southern most area of the state, the Florida Keys. The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida , 15 miles south of Miami extend- ing in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas.. They form the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They lie along the Florida Straits, with the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest, defining one edge of Florida Bay. The climate of the “Keys” by definition is tropical savanna (much like the Caribbean). The total land area is 137.3 square miles and as of the 2014 census, its population was 77,136. Key Largo, the most northern section of the Keys and largest, is the location of the first undersea park in the United States, (John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park) was established in 1963, and is located at Mile Marker 102. The park is primarily offshore and stretches three miles into the Atlantic Ocean and is 25 miles long. Home to tropical hardwoods, winding creeks, two state parks, a national park and a portion of a national marine sanctuary, Key Largo boasts some of the most fascinating botanical scenery in the state. Islamorada a "Village of Islands," is located on the islands of Tea Table Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Windley Key and Plantation Key. Islamorada is the sports fishing capital of the world. Marine Mammal Adventure Park offers eco tours, swimming with Dolphins, Sea Lions, and Sting Rays, plus other programs in beautifully landscaped settings. Marathon is a city on Knight's Key, Boot Key, Key Vaca, Fat Deer Key, Long Point Key, Crawl Key and Grassy Key is- lands in the middle of the Florida Keys. You’ll find activities here in the Heart of the Florida Keys for family members of all ages and energy levels! Visit the Turtle Hospital, historic little Pigeon Key island and museum, the Crane Point Ham- mock Nature Preserve and History Museum, or the world renowned Dolphin Research Center where you can get up close and personal (even swim with) Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins! 4 Cont. from page 4 Big Pine Key, located in the lower Keys, is home to the National Key Deer Refuge, this island is where the major- ity of the Key Deer population can be found. The endangered Key deer are found in the lower Florida Keys, and nowhere else in the world. Key West, located at the southern most tip of the Keys, encompasses the island of Key West, the part of Stock Island north of U.S. 1, Sigsbee Park (north, originally known as Dredgers Key), Fleming Key (north), and Sunset Key (west, originally known as Tank Island). Both Fleming Key and Sigsbee Park are part of Naval Air Station Key West and are inaccessible by civilians. One of the biggest attractions on the island is a concrete replica of a buoy at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets that claims to be the southernmost point in the contiguous United States (see Extreme Points). Erected in 1983, the famous brightly painted and labeled "SOUTHERNMOST POINT CONTINENTAL U.S.A.", it is one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Key West. Author Ernest Hemingway made his vacation home here in Key West. Legend has it that Hemingway wrote part of A Farewell to Arms while living above the showroom of a Key West Ford dealership at 314 Simonton Street while awaiting delivery of a Ford Model A roadster purchased by the uncle of his wife Pauline in 1928.
