he last time I raced my Seven was October 2001 at Brands Hatch. The weather was so awful that it was impossible to see the car two feet in front of my nose cone. It was so bad that later T I was told I had overtaken several cars at the first corner, but I hadn't seen a single one of them! So when I first heard that the Caterham Festival was to take place at about the same time this year, I was convinced that it would be cold, wet and in short, a bit of a wash-out.

A stunning summer it has been too - 2 of our 3 runs are over both with great weather for once in the rainy north-west... Our early summer Oswestry based run into Wales was generally reckoned as one of the best runs ever - thanks go to our friendly GP for organising it. The roads were seriously fast and seriously scary, including the famous RAC rally forest track at Lake Vyrny. Our Portmerion day out was also seriously fast, not much relaxing about our runs! At least no speeding tickets this year. Thanks to all who turned up in Ruthin, the photo was early on so doesn't do it justice. It was fantastic to see the full range of Sevens from Cross flows, through B.D.A's, Vauxhalls to Superlights. Next trip is the Southern Lakes, lets hope the weather makes it special. The Future's Not Black and White

irstly, I want to thank you for the immensely positive response to last month's article - apart from the ongoing thread which has been running on the Club's website, I have had people F calling, e-mailing and on one occasion, even stopping me in the street! This month's offering is a short follow-up and 'call to muster' to those of you who like me are in favour of sensible measures but want to stem the tide of what is tantamount to an infringement of our personal liberty.

I appreciate that many members either can't or don't wish to lurk in internet chat rooms so I will precis the general tone of the discussion on BlatChat. The topic was started by Ken Evans and he's done a sterling job of keeping the subject on the boil - thanks Ken, I owe you a pint! It appears that many would like to see the Club joining the ABD (Association of British Drivers) thus offering its support to this voluntary organisation. That is of course a matter for the Management Committee. Regardless of their decision, we can still join as individuals if we wish. I have nothing to do with the organisation other than being can that have on motorists approaching a member myself, but certainly if their the danger area I ask you? funds grow sufficiently, they will be able to Picture 3 depicts a red-eye (forward broaden their platform and maybe we facing) camera on the Al northbound. beleaguered motorists may just begin to There are no side roads and the vision is be heard. To close, I would just like to thank Hugh and Susie for the mine of information which they imparted and for putting up with us. We want you back! Advertisement for new Regalia team

After four years, the current Regalia crew are standing down, and the Team are looking for Club members who may be interested in taking over. The job is what you make it, but currently involves running a mail order service throughout the year to the 3000 members, and being present at a number of Club events (such as Stoneleigh, the International, Curborough). It offers an opportunity to interact with a large number of members, and would suit sociable people. It is unlikely that one person alone would be able to handle the role. The role currently involves storing, transporting and selling the goods, as well as co-ordinating the advertising on the Web and in Low Flying. There is already a Club buyer, based in Warwickshire, f you would like to discuss this to find out what's involved, plea 01788 814 978, to talk with Mo.

Where will we park all the cars? What route should we take? Will people come? (we originally thought that we might get 20 Bay-Watchers if we were lucky). Permission was obtained from the local authorities and the RAC to stage the event, the route was set and tested, things at Caterham and the Ringlestone Inn were set up and information was sent to Roger Green for an advert for the event to be included in Low Flying. We were expecting a small wordage piece at the bottom of a page, but we got a full page spread! Over the next couple of days the emailing was frantic and we quickly got up to 70 cars. Ray hastily arranged more parking with the Harbour Master who was happy to support our event but was getting slightly worried that Broadstairs was about to be awoken by the sound of thunderous exhausts! The joining pack was emailed/snail mailed out and the 26th May arrived in a flash. 7.45 at Caterham cars. Thanks for opening up so early Jean!. He looked skyward and shouted an expletive and the rain got heavier! He apologised and it went back to a medium monsoon. Driving down the lane where he lives saw tidal waves passing over the bonnet and hitting the screen with such force that it felt as if he & Suzi Seven were at sea! The early morning weather was a mixture of heavy showers mixed with bright sunny spells. It seemed to rain harder the closer you got to Caterham. Ray had brought a pair of water wings with him for the windscreen wipers (in case things got really bad!). Even with the appalling weather the Bay-Watchers duly arrived over a two hour period with, as usual, Al 'I hate mornings' Wain last to arrive. Baywatch

Chris thinks that it doesn't stand for Independent Rear Suspension so much as Individually Rusting Suspension which is why it didn't come out in the rain. That member's name? I'm sure we all know! Beg, Borrow, Steal Curborough Sprint Aug 2002 - by Morgan Cleasby

It was just as well that Barbara Swift rang me on the Wednesday night. "Hope the weather is fine on Saturday," said I. "Saturday? The sprint's on Sunday, Morgan" Less welcome news was that Alex Wong's car was broken, then mended, and then broken again. As a result, he had arranged to do a dual drive in Gordon Cardew's car. It is those facts that demonstrate the nature of members of this club; they will readily lend their cherished machines to others, even those with a known diagnosis of pes plumbus (leadfoot). But why do people always have to borrow the quickest cars around? As Gordon's was likely to be the winning car in my class, this would now account for two of the trophies, and I would stand little cha"™» «* «f»«iner th* thirrf

Saturday, 14in December 1.30pm, Coulsdon, Surrey

I've had this on the back burner for some time now so it's with great relief that I can now say that we have an event organised. Andy Belcher, a Surrey Area member, has volunteered his garage business premises in Coulsdon, Surrey to act as a venue for an afternoon's introduction to basic Se7en maintenance for novices. The idea is to have 3 cars on show, Ford Crossflow, Rover K-series and Vauxhall 2-litre XE to instruct 30 club members on how to perform basic maintenance on the Caterham 7.

Areas to be covered include: - oSafely jacking up a car with correct jack and axle stand location oChecking of Gearbox and Differential oil levels and awareness of impending failure (noises to listen for) oChecking of suspension and steering parts, bushes, bearings, etc., for play, wear etc. oChecking and changing of brake pads front and rear, and changing of brake fluid. oChecking and changing of coolant. oBasic engine maintenance; oil and filter change (make aware of the gauze in the sump; K & Vx), spark plug maintenance, air filter condition, and setting up of Webber DCOE carburettors. oGood tyre maintenance; the importance of pressures, checking wear etc.

There will be an opportunity to ask specific question's after all the basics have been explained to those present.

Please fill out and send back the form (photocopies accepted) below ASAP whereupon I'll be in touch to confirm your place and provide directions to the venue. A £5 contribution to NTL will be levied for the day.

All the best
