Graham Nearn Getto knowyour Seven in the Midlands? As this issue was going to print, we were saddened to learn of the death of Graham Nearn, founder of Caterham Cars. His belief in the Seven concept and his contribution Aprii 2010 to its history is, of course, beyond measure; but it's that enthusiasm and persistence that has ensured the car-and the spirit that accompanies it-continues as his legacy.

Graham passed away, in his sleep, on the morning of October 24th; our thoughts For those of you who are new to the Seven fold are with the Nearn family and all of Grahams former colleagues and many friends -or perhaps just less familiar with the basic within the Seven community. The combination of racing cars and an invigorating drive in his Seven made a memorable weekend for John Aston. The Silverstone Classic, scene ofour 25th Anniversary célébration last year, is a great place to immerse yourself in nostalgia and get close to a host of fine machinery. A MASTER'S IN CLASSICS

You KNOW, SOMETIMES just being around racing cars can be enough. Really-it every tuck and curve of a Gulf-liveried can be every bit as good as watching the action on the track. Especially when you Porsche 917 and to remind myself once again are at Silverstone, the circuit I first visited in 1971 to see Jackie Stewart walk to just how gorgeous the Ford F3L looked, forty years after I had last seen one retire-but another win in the Tyrrell (I was there tool Ed.) and the place where the view from so gloriously-from the Tourist Trophy at the spectator banking has become ever more distant, ever more uninvolving, Oulton Park. with every passing decade. 8 Lowflying November 2009 This isn't going to be some Autosport-lite account of every race-how dull would that be -but what it felt like to be there. So it's impres- sionism, not reportage, ok? So here is what thrilled me, captivated me and absorbed me, and, in one case, utterly bemused me:

A Martini liveried Brabham BT42 being driven by a guy who had to be quick just from the sound of his name-Manfredo Rossi di Montelera. Signor Rossi looked impossibly cool in the way only an Italian can be, especially one whose family used to sponsor the team.

The sound of a Lola T70 being warmed up in the tight confines of a pit garage; how I love that warbling bellow of a small-block Chevrolet V8 spitting and barking through its quartet of giant Webers.

Chris Rea, driving like a hero against a thunder- bruised sky, Lotus 6 aluminium panels sheening in the rain.

The almost gratuitous beauty of a Ferrari 250 SWB, swooping style in every curve, and in such sharp contrast to the F430 Scuderia parked nearby, covered in decals advertising a bath- room outfitter and looking like a Ronsealed WAG in comparison.

Nissan R90C-the potent full monty of ground effect and massive turbo power.

John Haugland sliding his Lotus Cortina out of Bridge like the rally driver he used to be.

Bobby Rahal-inch perfect every lap in his Cooper S and Chevron B16-a racer's racerif ever there was one.

The Corvette Grand Sport, a sliding white mon- ster whose driver reported that its steering was unnecessary-direction of travel being dépend- ent entirely on brake or throttle position.
