22 Wing/CFB North Bay was founded in 1951 as RCAF Station North Bay, part of the country’s new national air defence network built in response to the Cold War threat of attack from the Soviet Union. In 1963 it became home to Canada’s North American Air (now Aerospace) Defence Command control centre, responsible for the surveillance, aircraft identification, fighter control and early warning system (EWS) in the Canadian Arctic, east-central Canada and Maritimes.

• Surveillance and identification of all air traffic approaching North America is accomplished using radar information received via satellite from the across the Canadian Arctic, coastal radars on the east and west coasts of Canada, and Airborne Warning and Control System Aircraft.

• The Algonquin Regiment originated on July 1st, 1900 with the creation of the “97th Regiment of Rifles”.

• The Regiment’s independent companies can trace their official heritages back to 1863 and the Fenian Raids of 1866.

• Today, The Algonquin Regiment is a part of the 33 Canadian Brigade Group and as an Army Reserve Infantry Unit. The Regiment’s task is to augment Canada’s military by providing professionally trained infantry soldiers domestically and abroad.
