Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response. -

Bernadette Filotas PAGAN SURVIVALS, SUPERSTITIONS AND POPULAR CULTURES IN EARLY MEDIEVAL PASTORAL LITERATURE Is medieval pastoral literature an accurate reflection of actual beliefs and practices in the early medieval West or simply of literary conventions in- herited by clerical writers? How and to what extent did Christianity and traditional pre-Christian beliefs and practices come into conflict, influence each other, and merge in popular culture? This comprehensive study examines early medieval popular culture as it appears in ecclesiastical and secular law, sermons, penitentials and other pastoral works – a selective, skewed, but still illuminating record of the be- liefs and practices of ordinary Christians. GS 1724 Not authorized for liturgical use (except in accordance with any designation under Canon B 5A) Additional Weekday Lectionary and Amendments to Calendar, Lectionary and Collects Report by the Liturgical Commission INTRODUCTION 1. The Texts for Authorization attached to this report fall into three distinct parts: (I) The Additional Weekday Lectionary (II) Minor amendments to the Common Worship Calendar (with a consequential amendment to a Collect and Post Communion) (III) Minor corrections to the Common Worship Lectionaries. This covering report offers an explanation of each of these elements in turn. I: ADDITIONAL WEEKDAY LECTIONARY Background 2. The provisional Weekday Lectionary which was authorized in 2000 included (in addition to the Daily Eucharistic Lectionary) two office lectionaries which were unrelated to each other. The Office Lectionary, commonly used at Morning Prayer, provided readings that were generally in sequence, while the Second Office Lectionary, commonly used at Evening Prayer, aimed to offer two readings which were complete in themselves and would therefore make sense to a congregation which had not heard the previous day’s readings. Because these readings were intended to ‘stand alone’, the Second Office Lectionary was colloquially known as a ‘pillar lectionary’. 3. The 2000 Weekday Lectionary was authorized on a temporary basis with a view to revision in the light of experience of its use. In fact, there was general dissatisfaction with it and the Liturgical Commission therefore decided to propose a complete replacement, rather than a revision. The ‘pillar lectionary’ in particular was widely criticized. Many people wanted to use a ‘continuous’ lectionary at both offices, and the current Weekday Lectionary which received Final Approval in February 2005 therefore provides for ‘continuous’ reading of Scripture at both Morning and Evening Prayer. -

1 Primary Source 3.2 THE VENERABLE BEDE ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY OF ENGLAND (731 A.D.)1 The Anglo-Saxon monk and author, known to posterity as the Venerable Bede (c. 672– 735), was apparently a deeply spiritual man described as constantly praising God, even at the last moments of his life, when he could scarcely breathe. A learned scholar with broad knowledge of ancient and early medieval theology and secular writings, he wrote a huge number of works on theology, biblical commentary, the lives of saints, and secular and religious history. His most famous work, excerpted here, recounts the historical development of Britain with a focus on the vibrant evolution of the church. The passage below concerns the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons from paganism to Christianity. Key themes are the care with which missionaries sought to transform customs without giving offense, Christian humility, and how the converts’ belief in miracles wrought in the name of Christ facilitated their conversion. [429 A.D.] Some few years before their arrival, the Pelagian heresy,4 brought over by Agricola, the son of Severianus, a Pelagian bishop, had corrupted with its foul taint the faith of the Britons. But whereas they absolutely refused to embrace that perverse doctrine, and blaspheme the grace of Christ, yet were not able of themselves to confute the subtilty of the unholy belief by force of argument, they bethought them of wholesome counsels and determined to crave aid of the Gallican5 prelates in that spiritual warfare. -

The Next Century in Anglican Monasticism A. Appleton Packard, O.H.C. Fr. Packard is Master of Postulants and Cantor of the O rder of the Holy Cross of the Episcopal Church, at West Park, Ulster County, N . Y. He returned a year or so ago from several years' service in t he Holy Cross Mission, Liberia, West Africa. He was graduated in 1929 from the Gen eral Theological Seminary in New York City with the degree of Bachelor of Sacred Theology. Look back more than one hundred and twenty years. On March 26, 1845, two Sisters of the Holy Cross began corporate, community religious life in a bouse at 17 Park Village West, Regent's Park, London. They were the first Anglican nuns in over three centuries. From this tiny beginning there grew and steadily flourished the great tree of monasticism now firmly planted in the world-wide spiritual garden of Anglicanism. Look back nearly seventy years. At the opening of the 1900s, a half-century after the life of the Counsels for both men and women was permanently re-established, the greater communities bad gained and proved their stability; they were already rooted at home in Eng land and in the outlying provinces of the whole Communion. By this time other communities of less sure foundation bad succumbed or were tending towards dissolution. But the tide bad turned; secular 234 Dominicana opposition waned; ecclesiastical suspicion changed to growing, posi tive approval. Our Anglican Church had added fresh proof of her all-embracing, essential, fundamental Catholicity, by means of the fertility and fruitage of holy religion.
