As IMDb celebrates its 30th birthday, we have six shows to get you ready for those pivotal years of your life Get some streaming picks. This is the pilot to the series that would star . Only in this version there is different Captain, Christopher Pike, and with the exception of Mr. , an entirely different crew. Now it begins when the Enterprise receives what appears to be a distress message. But when they get to the planet where the message was sent from, they discover that the supposed survivors were nothing more than illusions created by the inhabitants of the planet, for the purpose of capturing a mate for the one genuine surviving human, and Captain Pike is the lucky winner. While Captain In the Cage tries to cope In the Cage the experiments and tests that the aliens are conducting on him, his crew tries to find a way to rescue him. But the aliens' illusions are too powerful and deceptive at first. Watching Star Trek's first pilot episode The Cage is like watching a historical what if taking place. Famously deemed "too cerebral" at the time of its production The Cage is where one of the most popular television programs of all time got its beginning. While it might be the beginning that never went much further, forty-five years later it is still a compelling piece of entertainment. To begin with The Cage features some nice performances that make it a tragedy that never got to be developed past this one In the Cage. The best example of this is In the Cage hunter as Enterprise captain Christopher Pike. Hunter's Pike comes across as being perhaps more sensitive then the later Captain Kirk yet just as tough. It's also interesting to note as Spock In the Cage contrast his performance here In the Cage his later performances as the Spock of The Cage seems a bit less logical and a little more emotional. There's also a nice performance from in the multiple guises of Vina which show off some considerable talent. Not to mention performances from and John Hoyt amongst others. The Cage is also blessed with some nice production values. In particular in the make-up and costumes of the Tallosians which stand-up relatively well even forty-five years In the Cage. The sets and the vast majority of the other costumes, while definite sixties creations like many of those in Star Trek: The Original Series, are nice guesses all things considered. There's also an exciting and well staged fight sequence in the middle of the story. Last but not least there's In the Cage score by which shows off not only the Star Trek theme but Courage's skills as a composer. Together they show an inkling of what might have been if this version of Star Trek had not been aborted. That said everything isn't perfect. If anything can be said to be a major drawback to The Cage it is the special effects. While most of them are passable and still work, some don't. This is especially true of the shots of the Enterprise itself which are far from convincing most of the time. There's also the matter of the warp sequence which looks to be incredibly cheaply done. That said there's also some fine effects like the In the Cage with Vina at the episodes end. The effects might be questionable but they serve the story well for the most part. If any single element of The Cage stands out today it is the script. Once you get passed some of the clunky techobabel and some of the dated dialog like Pike's "women on the bridge" line early on in the episode there is an intriguing and compelling tale. Beneath the surface it is a tale of In the Cage society so lost obsessed with illusion it has lost its other knowledge and its morality an unintended metaphor for fandom perhaps? It is also the tale of a man Pike who seeks to escape his responsibility and rebels when given the chance. It also contains a Nice little romance in the midst of a nicely constructed In the Cage that is far from intrusive and rather compliments the story by giving it an emotional anchor. It's no mistake that The Cage in a later form the Original Series two-part story The Menagerie won the which convinces me that, given In the Cage editing, The Cage would be just as compelling and watchable today. The Cage stands as an In the Cage piece of television history. With nice performances, good production values and a script as impressive now as it was then The Cage represents the beginning of one of television's most popular series. It also stands out as a fascinating what if of how Star Trek might have been. Looking for some great streaming picks? Trivia In one brief part of the first transportation sequence, the chief's assistant is a man wearing glasses, but the scene changes and he appears without them. This is one of only three occasions where officers are shown wearing corrective eyeglasses. Goofs The Talosians wanted to attract a mate for Vina "to perpetuate the species", but this would be impossible with only two people. A minimum of about would be needed in order to have a sufficiently diverse gene pool. Quotes Yeoman J. Colt : What's happened to Vina? Number One : Isn't she coming with us? A young man returns to In the Cage rich family's estate after a stay in a mental hospital. He finds that his father has married his deceased wife's nurse, who is secretly plotting with her lover, the chauffeur, to murder the father and take his fortune. Written by frankfob2 yahoo. A young man gets out of a mental institution and returns home to his wealthy father, his beloved cat "Sampson", and his sexy but wicked stepmother Sybil Danningthe latter of whom may have murdered his mother and is scheming with the shady chauffeur Mel Novak to do the same to his father. God knows this is not a good movie. Nor does it even fall into that almost mythical category In the Cage "so bad, it's good", but I found it entertaining because it is so randomly plotted and jaw-droppingly incompetent that it seems to violate the very laws of cinematic narrative structure and perhaps even Cartesian logic. I think the cat "Sampson" is supposed to be a metaphor because he completely disappears about halfway through the movie. Or maybe the cat is a metaphysical incarnation of the protagonist's equally disturbed brother who In the Cage up out of nowhere halfway through the film just in time In the Cage an overlong 70's style car chase. Or maybe the feline actor just walked off the set prompting a quick re-write--it's kind of hard to say. Mel Novak is pretty good actually, and Sybil Danning Both of them exit prematurely, In the Cage, and the film is left in the hands of uncharismatic male lead and Colleen Camp, who is normally a talented actress but plays a completely superfluous character here although she DOES get to belt out the risible theme song. This is definitely a one-of-a-kind movie; maybe not the good kind, but. Looking for something to watch? Choose an adventure below and discover your next In the Cage movie or TV show. The Cage (Star Trek: The Original Series) - Wikipedia

It was completed in early with a copyright In the Cage of The episode was written by Gene Roddenberry and directed by Robert Butler. Most of the original footage from "The Cage" was later incorporated into the season 1 two-parter episode " The Menagerie " Kirkbut Christopher Pike. Spock is present, but not as first officer. That role is taken by a character known only as Number OneIn the Cage by Majel Barrett. Spock's character differs somewhat from that seen in the rest In the Cage Star Trek ; he displays a youthful eagerness that contrasts with the later more reserved and logical Spock. He also delivers the first line in all of Star Trek : "Check the circuit! NBC reportedly called the pilot "too cerebral", "too intellectual", and "too slow" with "not enough action". During the first season, In the Cage producers' need for new episodes to be delivered to the network to meet the original series commitment became urgent, and a frame was written allowing most of the original footage from "The Cage" to be used within the series' continuity as a two-part episode " The Menagerie ". On the VHS home video releases, it was identified as Episode 1. The process of editing the pilot into "The Menagerie" disassembled the original camera In the Cage of "The Cage", and thus, for many years it was considered partly lost. Roddenberry's black-and-white 16mm print made In the Cage reference purposes was the only existing print of the show, and was frequently shown at In the Cage. Early video releases of "The Cage" used Roddenberry's 16mm print, intercut with the color scenes from "The Cage" that were used in "The Menagerie". It was only in that a film archivist found an unmarked mute 35mm reel in a Hollywood film laboratory In the Cage the negative trims of the unused scenes. Upon realizing what he had found, he arranged for the return of the footage to Roddenberry's In the Cage. According to "The Menagerie", the events of "The Cage" take place thirteen years before the first season of Star Trekin No was given. A landing party is assembled and beamed down to investigate. Tracking the distress signal to its source, the In the Cage party discovers a camp of survivors from a scientific expedition that has been missing for eighteen years. Amongst the survivors is a beautiful young woman named Vina. Captivated by her beauty, Pike is caught off guard and is In the Cage by the Talosians, a race of humanoids with bulbous heads who live beneath the planet's surface. It is revealed that the distress call, and the crash survivors, except for Vina, are just illusions created by the Talosians to lure the Enterprise to the planet. While imprisoned, Pike uncovers the Talosians' plans to repopulate their ravaged planet using him and Vina as breeding stock for In the Cage race of slaves. The Talosians use their power of illusion to try to interest Pike in Vina, and present her in various In the Cage and settings, first as a Rigellian princess, a loving compassionate farm girl, then a seductive, green-skinned . Pike resists all forms. After an earlier landing party failed to gain entry from the surface, six members of the Enterprise crew prepare to beam into the Talosians underground complex, but only Pike's first officer and yeoman—both women—materialize in Pike's cell to offer further temptation. By then, In the Cage, Pike has discovered that primitive human emotions can block the Talosians' ability to read his mind, and he manages to escape to the surface of the planet along with the two members of his landing party. The Talosians confront Pike and his companions before they can transport back to the Enterprise. The captain tries to negotiate, but the first officer sets her weapon on a buildup to overload. Pike and Vina In the Cage closer to her, agreeing with her preference for death rather than captivity. After all, as Vina explains, if the Talosians have In the Cage one human being, they might try again. This demonstration of fatal resolve confirms what the Talosians have been gleaning from the records they've accessed from the Enterprise's computers: the human race despises captivity far too much to be useful. Despite their last hope having In the Cage proven unsuitable, the Talosians are not vengeful. They let the humans go. The first officer and yeoman beam up immediately, but Pike remains behind with Vina, urging her to leave with him. Vina explains that she cannot leave. An expedition had indeed crash-landed on Talos IV; Vina was the sole survivor, but was badly injured. The Talosians were able to save her, but as they had no understanding of human physiology or aesthetics at the time, she was left horribly disfigured. With the aid of the Talosians' illusions, she is able to appear beautiful and in good health, as much to herself as to any others. Realizing that the continued Talosian illusion of health and beauty is necessary for Vina, Pike is ready to return to the In the Cage without her. In an act of goodwill, the aliens show him that Vina sees an image of Pike next to her, and they walk up to the entrance that takes them into the Talosian habitat. Pike then beams up after the Keeper's closing words: "She has an illusion and you have reality. May you find your way as pleasant. Jeffrey Hunter had a six-month exclusive option for the role of Captain Pike. Deciding to concentrate on motion pictures instead, he declined the role. This has to be your own decision, of course, and I must respect it. You may be certain I hold no grudge or ill feelings and expect to continue to reflect publicly and privately the high regard I learned for you during the production of our pilot. Two weeks after the option expired on June 1,Hunter formally gave his letter requesting separation from the project. He died on May 27,one week before the original series In the Cage its run. Roddenberry later suggested that he was the one who—unhappy with interference by Hunter's then-wife Dusty Bartlett—had decided not In the Cage rehire Hunter. Solowwho was present when Bartlett, acting as manager, refused the role on behalf of her husband, later said in his memoir, Inside Star Trekthat it was the other way around. Post-production work pick-up shotsediting, scoring, special photographic and sound effects continued to January 18, Gene Roddenberry paid a lot of attention to what The Outer Limits team was doing at the time, and he was often present in their studios. The prop head from The Outer Limits episode " Fun and Games " was used to make a Talosian appear as a vicious creature. The "ion storm" In the Cage in " The Mutant " a projector beam shining through a container holding glitter in liquid suspension became the transporter effect. The Talosians were portrayed by women, with their telepathic voices recorded by male actors. This was done to give the impression that the In the Cage had focused their efforts on mental development to the detriment of their physical strength and size, and also to give that much more of an alien feel to the Talosians. However, the deep voice of Malachi Throne as the Keeper in "The Cage" was electronically processed to sound higher-pitched [14] for "The Menagerie", as Throne also portrayed Commodore Mendez in the latter. The Keeper's voice from "The Menagerie" was kept for both the remastered and new "original" versions of "The Cage" which would be released later. Throne's unaltered voice work as The Keeper only survives as a brief sample that can be found in the preview trailer for "The Menagerie" Part II. Although portions of this episode were edited into original series episode "The Menagerie" aired Novemberthe actual "The Cage" pilot was not released until a VHS In the Cage. However, in the edited film sections were finally discovered, and it was possible to complete a full-color version. InSciFiNow ranked this the third In the Cage episode of the original series.
