The City of Cape Town Cape Town is a diverse city and is regarded as the melti ng point for various diff erent cultures in Southern Africa. One would be hard pressed to fi nd a reason not to fall in love with one of South Africa’s most iconic city. It has one of the most idyllic setti ngs - nestled between the ocean and breath-taking mountains. The iconic Table Mountain rises 1 086 above the city and has served as a mariner’s landmark. On a clear day, the fl at-topped mountain is visible 200km out to sea. Cape Town is the legislati ve capital of South Africa. It is a world-class cosmopolitan city with numerous sites of historical signifi cance, and a lively night-life, as well as a large gay community. 56 Booklet2.indd 56 4/19/10 9:30:27 PM Transport Overview 4. The City of Cape Town will off er visitors and residents safe and easily accessible public transport during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Rail, bus and other existi ng services i.e. metered taxis and car rental will cater for a wide variety of transport requirements, and will ensure that the Cape Cape Town Town Stadium, the FIFA Fan Fest™ and the public viewing areas are adequately served. Event-related public transport will be added to the regular public transport system i.e. an airport shutt le to the Cape Town Internati onal Airport, a stadium shutt le to the Cape Town Stadium and Bus & Rail Park and Ride services. Travel around the city will be served by an inner city transport service. 57 Booklet2.indd 57 4/19/10 9:30:37 PM Airport Shutt le Services An airport-to-city service will run from the bus stati on at the airport, via the N2 and Eastern Boulevard, to the main transport hub. This service will operate 24 hours a day for the durati on of the event. ! 58 Booklet2.indd 58 4/19/10 9:30:39 PM Stadium Match Shutt le A free shutt le bus service for match ti cket holders will run from the main transport hub to Cape Town Stadium in Green Point. This service will operate from six hours before kick- off , unti l four hours aft er the fi nal whistle. Buses will depart every three to fi ve minutes, depending on demand. ! 59 Booklet2.indd 59 4/19/10 9:30:40 PM Inner City Transport Services The inner-city bus service, which will run 24 hours a day, will travel from the main transport hub and around the city’s main streets i.e. Heerengracht, Coen Steytler, Long and Loop Street and back to the main transport hub. This route is supplemented by the Queens Beach and Hout Bay services that serve a wider city area providing convenient access to the Waterfront and the Atlantic Seaboard. ! 60 Booklet2.indd 60 4/19/10 9:30:41 PM Bus Park n Ride Services A free (match ti cket holders only) shutt le service to the Main Transport Hub will run from the University of Cape Town, which is one of the three Park & Ride sites provided by the city. This service will operate during the same ti me as the stadium shutt le allowing spectators from UCT to transfer and proceed to the stadium. The other two park and ride sites are situated at Camps Bay High School and Kronendal Primary School in Hout Bay.
