The City of Cape Town Cape Town is a diverse city and is regarded as the melti ng point for various diff erent cultures in Southern Africa. One would be hard pressed to fi nd a reason not to fall in love with one of South Africa’s most iconic city. It has one of the most idyllic setti ngs - nestled between the ocean and breath-taking mountains. The iconic Table Mountain rises 1 086 above the city and has served as a mariner’s landmark. On a clear day, the fl at-topped mountain is visible 200km out to sea. Cape Town is the legislati ve capital of South Africa. It is a world-class cosmopolitan city with numerous sites of historical signifi cance, and a lively night-life, as well as a large gay community. 56 Booklet2.indd 56 4/19/10 9:30:27 PM Transport Overview 4. The City of Cape Town will off er visitors and residents safe and easily accessible public transport during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Rail, bus and other existi ng services i.e. metered taxis and car rental will cater for a wide variety of transport requirements, and will ensure that the Cape Cape Town Town Stadium, the FIFA Fan Fest™ and the public viewing areas are adequately served. Event-related public transport will be added to the regular public transport system i.e. an airport shutt le to the Cape Town Internati onal Airport, a stadium shutt le to the Cape Town Stadium and Bus & Rail Park and Ride services. This service will operate from six hours before kick- off , unti l four hours aft er the fi nal whistle. Buses will depart every three to fi ve minutes, depending on demand. ! 59 Booklet2.indd 59 4/19/10 9:30:40 PM Inner City Transport Services The inner-city bus service, which will run 24 hours a day, will travel from the main transport hub and around the city’s main streets i.e. Heerengracht, Coen Steytler, Long and Loop Street and back to the main transport hub. This route is supplemented by the Queens Beach and Hout Bay services that serve a wider city area providing convenient access to the Waterfront and the Atlantic Seaboard. ! 60 Booklet2.indd 60 4/19/10 9:30:41 PM Bus Park n Ride Services A free (match ti cket holders only) shutt le service to the Main Transport Hub will run from the University of Cape Town, which is one of the three Park & Ride sites provided by the city. This service will operate during the same ti me as the stadium shutt le allowing spectators from UCT to transfer and proceed to the stadium. The other two park and ride sites are situated at Camps Bay High School and Kronendal Primary School in Hout Bay. Mohamed Aden Osman, Sakhiwo ‘Toto’ Gxabela, and Wanda Bici provided research assistance in the field sites. ACMS wishes to acknowledge the research support of various individuals, organisations and government departments. Abdi Ahmed Aden and Mohamed Abshir Fatule of the Somali Retailers Association shared valuable information on the experiences of Somali traders in Cape Town. Abdikadir Khalif and Mohamed Aden Osman of the Somali Association of South Africa, and Abdirizak Mursal Farah of the Somali Refugee Aid Agency assisted in providing advice and arranging venues for interviews in Bellville and Mitchells Plain. The South African Police Service (SAPS) introduced ACMS to relevant station commanders who in turn facilitated interviews with sector managers as well as detectives at their stations. Fundiswa Hoko at the SAPS Western Cape provincial office provided quick and efficient coordination. The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development facilitated interviews with prosecutors, and the National Prosecuting Authority provided ACMS with valuable data on prosecutions relating to ‘xenophobia cases’. ACMS also acknowledges the many Somali traders and South African township residents who spoke openly with ACMS and shared their views and experiences.

The FIFA World Cup, Human Rights Goals and the Gulf Between Richard Peltz-Steele Abstract With Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 on the horizon, the process for selecting hosts for the World Cup of men’s football has been plagued by charges of corruption and human rights abuses. FIFA celebrated key developing economies with South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014. But amid the aftermath of the global financial crisis, those sitings surfaced grave and persistent criticism of the social and economic efficacy of sporting mega-events. Meanwhile new norms emerged in global governance, embodied in instruments such as the U.N. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP) and the Sustainable Development Goals. These norms posit that commercial aims can be harmonized with socioeconomic good. FIFA seized on the chance to restore public confidence and recommit itself to human exultation in sport, adopting sustainability strategies and engaging the architect of the UNGP to develop a human rights policy.

Yet, although the fl ower sellers are part of Cape Town’s living history, a beacon for tourists, and literally contributes to the Mother City’s vibrant and colourful life, they represent a dying breed. Where do they come from, and more importantly, what is their future? This descriptive article within the paradigm of microhistory is, thus far known, a fi rst social scientifi c exploration of the history of this unique group of Capetonians, the origins of the fl ower market, and its fl ower legacy.

The South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup: A Look Back: Perceptions of its Impact on Tourism in South Africa Tinashe Chuchu* School of Business Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. *Email: [email protected] Received: 06 May 2021 Accepted: 08 July 2021 DOI: https://doi.org/10.32479/irmm.11593 ABSTRACT Africa’s first FIFA World Cup sparked a series of scholarly work mostly conducted prior to this event. This phenomena is still relevant today with many unanswered questions. This research therefore investigates and examines literature on how the 2010 FIFA World Cup is perceived almost a decade later. A qualitative approach was adopted based on secondary data sources and grey literature. Contextual information was gathered from popular data bases that include Science direct, Ebsco host, Emerald and Google scholar. A total of 20 studies on both tourism in South Africa and the 2010 FIFA World Cup published between 2004 and 2019 were examined and systematically presented and discussed. Recurring trends based on review of literature were identified. The destination image theory and the destination concept were used to comprehend international visitors’ attitudes and their interpretation of South Africa as a travel destination. One of key findings was that the crime in South Africa, before, during after the World Cup ranks highest in terms of tourism deterrence. However, the event was generally perceived positive as a fairly positive success with room for socio-economic improvement.
