WHAT WE CAN DO IN THE STRUGGLE FOR REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE INTRODUCTION The term reproductive justice was introduced in the 1990s by a group of American Women of Color,1 who had attended the 1994 Inter- national Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), which was sponsored by the United Nations and is known as “the Cairo conference.” 2 After listening to debates by representatives of the gov- ernments of UN nation states about how to slow population growth and encourage the use of contraceptives and the extent to which women’s reproductive rights could/should be guaranteed, the group realized, as Loretta Ross later wrote, that “[o]ur ability to control what happens to our bodies is constantly challenged by poverty, racism, en- vironmental degradation, sexism, homophobia, and injustice . -

While incarcerated for the attack, she penned the "S.C.U.M. Manifesto"—"The Society for Cutting Up Men." By doing so, Solanis appropriated the traditionally masculine manifesto genre, which had evolved from sov- ereign proclamations of the 1600s into a form of radical protest of the 1960s. Feminist appropriation of the manifesto genre can be traced as far back as the 1848 Seneca Falls Woman's Rights Convention, at which suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Coffin Mott, Martha Coffin, and Mary Ann McClintock parodied the Declara- tion of Independence with their "Declaration of Sentiments" (Campbell, 1989). -
Finally Become Global Or Just Another Product of Neoliberal Feminism?
#MeToo – Has the ‘sisterhood’ finally become global or just another product of neoliberal feminism? Farnush Ghadery [email protected] LSS, Law School London South Bank University Abstract: The article discusses the #MeToo movement by reflecting on its origins and recent developments to consider its position within feminist theory. On the one hand, the cross- border proliferation of this hashtag revived the question once posed by liberal feminist Robin Morgan: Has the ‘sisterhood’ finally become global? Others questioned the deeper meaning of the ‘me’ as part of #MeToo, wondering whether the need for individual responsibility to come forward indicates that the movement fits only too well with what has been coined neoliberal feminism. Disagreeing with both categorisations, the article positions #MeToo as a transnational feminist consciousness-raising endeavour which can be traced across different places worldwide. Referring to some of these contextualised uses of #MeToo, the article argues that #MeToo has been able to manifest itself as a transnational feminist phenomenon, as it has allowed groups in distinct spaces and localities to take ownership of the varying manifestations of #MeToo. Introduction It is now a year and a half ago that the revelation of sexual violence and harassment amongst the bold and the beautiful in Hollywood1 led to the hashtag ‘MeToo’ going viral. This event permitted the laywoman and layman to share their own story of sexual violence or to ‘just’ express that they, too, have been subjected to forms of sexual abuse by tweeting or sharing on Facebook, Instagram and other forms of social media the now famous expression of #MeToo. -

Spring 2020 67 BLUEPRINT FOR A FEMINIST BOOKSTORE Errol “E.R” Anderson, Charis Circle Executive Director TBooks and More is how homey the space feels, how “safe.” It is, in part, this feeling of warmth, of respite in an increasingly fractured world, that has kept customers and program attend- ees returning to Charis for more than forty-four years. I cannot write about Charis in an objective way because Charis raised me and made me so much of the person I am today. I came to Charis through the young women’s writer’s program run by Charis co- founder Linda Bryant in 1998 and have grown up within the walls of 1189 Euclid Ave., honing my politics and my writing, making - ris Circle. Because we have survived when many other feminist and independent bookstores have not, people want to know how we do it. As I write this in March of 2019, Charis is preparing to embark on a once in a lifetime move to begin a partnership with independent, feminist bookstore, Charis Books and More and and add Charis at Agnes Scott College, a school store serving the needs of the Agnes Scott College Community. This is our story 68 Sinister Wisdom 116- Making Connections The Charis Story, 1974–19951 a twenty-one-year-old philanthropist named Edie Cofrin that her dream of being “surrounded by books that would encourage and enlighten people.” Linda and her cofounder Barbara Borgman started without a business plan, or business experience, using an owner-operator setup, in a neighborhood that was then more run-down than revolutionary. -

Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Ohio State University Alexandra Mary Jenkins, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Jared Gardner, Advisor Sean O’Sullivan Robyn Warhol Copyright by Alexandra Mary Jenkins 2014 Abstract Feminist activism in the United States and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s harnessed radical social thought and used innovative expressive forms in order to disrupt the “grand perspective” espoused by men in every field (Adorno 206). Feminist student activists often put their own female bodies on display to disrupt the disembodied “objective” thinking that still seemed to dominate the academy. The philosopher Theodor Adorno responded to one such action, the “bared breasts incident,” carried out by his radical students in Germany in 1969, in an essay, “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis.” In that essay, he defends himself against the students’ claim that he proved his lack of relevance to contemporary students when he failed to respond to the spectacle of their liberated bodies. He acknowledged that the protest movements seemed to offer thoughtful people a way “out of their self-isolation,” but ultimately, to replace philosophy with bodily spectacle would mean to miss the “infinitely progressive aspect of the separation of theory and praxis” (259, 266). Lisa Yun Lee argues that this separation continues to animate contemporary feminist debates, and that it is worth returning to Adorno’s reasoning, if we wish to understand women’s particular modes of theoretical ii insight in conversation with “grand perspectives” on cultural theory in the twenty-first century. -

1 Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz Excerpt from Chapter 4: 1968 pp. 109-156) of Outlaw Woman: A Memoir of the War Years, 1960-1975, (New edition, University of Oklahoma Press, 2014) Presented as part of "A Revolutionary Moment: Women's Liberation in the late 1960s and early 1970s," a conference organized by the Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Program at Boston University, March 27-29, 2014. “SUPER-WOMAN POWER ADVOCATE SHOOTS . .” That news headline propelled me to action. On Tuesday, June 4, 1968, I sat in Sanborn’s restaurant in México City across from the beautiful Bellas Artes building. As the original Sanborn's, the walls are lined with sepia photographs of Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa and their soldiers celebrating their revolutionary victory in that very place in 1914. Jean-Louis wanted me to meet his old friend Arturo. Arturo was a Mexican poet and anarchist intensively involved in organizing against the Olympics. I was sullen and angry because Jean-Louis had introduced me as mi esposa, his wife. Screaming fights between us had become normal, and I was trying to devise another way to go to Cuba. I suspected that the purpose of the meeting with Arturo was to dissuade me from going to Cuba. Arturo called Fidel Castro a statist who was wedded to 2 “Soviet imperialism,” and he complained that Cuba had agreed to participate in the Olympics. Arturo was smart, intense, and angry, his personality similar to that of Jean-Louis. When he spoke, he hit the palm of his left hand with the rolled-up tabloid in his right hand. -

Through the Hall of Fame, residents of Chicago and the world are made aware of the contributions of Chicago’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities and the communities’ efforts to eradicate bias and discrimination. With the support of the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations, the Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian Issues (now the Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues) established the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in June 1991. The inaugural induction ceremony took place during Pride Week at City Hall, hosted by Mayor Richard M. Daley. This was the first event of its kind in the country. The Hall of Fame recognizes the volunteer and professional achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, their organizations and their friends, as well as their contributions to the LGBT communities and to the city of Chicago. -
