Archeologia e Calcolatori Supplemento 10, 2018, 000-000 THE MEDIEVAL KINGDOM OF SICILY IMAGE DATABASE 1. Project Overview: The Significance of the Database and the Historical Material it Covers We now experience buildings of the medieval past through the filter of repairs, restoration, and reconstruction. This may be particularly true for the monuments of the historic Kingdom of Sicily, which have been subjected to damage from earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and the aerial bombardments of World War II. In addition, South Italian monuments, like those everywhere in Italy, were usually once covered by Baroque decoration in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries, much of which was later removed during a period of “remedievalization” after the unification of Italy. Urban growth, especial- ly after the middle of the twentieth century, has transformed the visual and symbolic role of these representational monuments, their relation to the urban and natural landscape, and their importance for the visual cultures of Europe and the Mediterranean. So what do we actually see when we look at a medieval monument? Whose “Middle Ages” are we actually experiencing? Are there ways to come closer to the appearance of a site prior to all the changes and modifications described above? The Kingdom of Sicily Image Database (Fig. 1) (http://kos.aahvs.duke. edu/), freely accessible online since October 2016, is an attempt to respond to this question by collecting visual documents (drawings, paintings, pho- tographs, prints…) that illustrate the appearance of, and changes to, the medieval monuments of South Italy (roughly 10th-15th centuries) (Bruzelius 2016; Bruzelius, Vitolo 2016; Vitolo 2017a, 20107b). -

San Lorenzo in Palatio ad Sancta Sanctorum and Scala Santa San Lorenzo in Palatio ad Sancta Sanctorum is a devotional church in an edifice having a 13th century core in a mainly 16th century structure. Here is the famous Scala Santa or "Holy Staircase”. The entire complex is an extraterritorial property of the Vatican City, which means that the freehold remains with the Republic of Italy but all government and administrative functions pertain to the Vatican. The building contains several discrete elements: Santuario Papale della Scala Santa, Sancta Sanctorum, San Lorenzo in Palatio, Cappella del Crocifisso, Oratorio di San Silvestro Oratorio del Santissimo Sacramento, Passionist convent. The Passionists are in charge of the sanctuary and church. History Sancta Sanctorum The chapel now known as the Sancta Sanctorum was the original private papal chapel of the mediaeval Lateran Palace, and as such was the predecessor of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. The popes made the Lateran their residence in the early 4th century as soon as the emperor Constantine had built the basilica, but the first reference to a private palace chapel dedicated to St Lawrence is in the entry in the Liber Pontificalis for Pope Stephen III (768-72). Pope Gregory IV (827-44) is recorded as having refitted the papal apartment next to the chapel. The entry for Pope Leo III (795-816) shows the chapel becoming a major store of relics. It describes a chest of cypress wood (arca cypressina) being kept here, containing "many precious relics" used in liturgical processions. The famous full-length icon of Christ Santissimo Salvatore acheropita was one of the treasures, first mentioned in the reign of Pope Stephen II (752-7) but probably executed in the 5th century. -

Saint Jude Tadeo?, Saint Matías ? or Saint Thomas ? AN APOSTLE BY LUIS TRISTÁN: RELATIONSHIP WITH EL GRECO, RIBERA, VELAZQUEZ AND THE NEW ITALIAN NATURALISTIC CURRENTS. The work we are studying represents an apostle in all his splendour and monumentality, whose iconographic identification is doubtful since the only attribute appearing is the halberd which is common to various apostles. Saint Matthews, creator of the first Gospel and Saint Jude Tadeo, also represented by El Greco with a halberd, are the most probable; San Matías is less probable due to having been martirized with an axe; and Saint Thomas, although the attribute does not correspond, since he died pierced by a lance, also could be the apostle represented due to his close relationship to the composition with the Saint Thomas of the Apostles by El Greco (El Greco Museum, Toledo) and the Saint Thomas by Velazquez (Orleans Museum). The painter certainly did not wish to centre his attention on an individualized identification of the saint, but rather on his general symbology as apostle: the halberd or lance with regard to his martyrdom as a form of death, the heavy tunic, with imposing folds, referring to his mighty task of spreading the Gospel continuously for the Church and the strong expression on his face in allusion to his tenacious character and indomitable conviction needed to accomplish his mission. The work can be attributed to the best work of Luis Tristán, and due to its quality may be considered a masterpiece carried out just on his return from his journey to Italy, in about 1613 when his spirit was still teeming excitedly with the ideas gathered in El Greco’s workshop and his contact with the modern Roman naturalistic currents shared with the young José Ribera. -

In the autograph works are included all paintings which on documentary or stylistic evidence appear to be by, or partly by, the hand of Caravaggio. The attributed works include all paintings that have been associated with Caravaggio’s name in critical writings but which, in the opinion of the present writer, cannot be fully accepted as his, and those of uncertain attribution which he has not been able to examine personally. Some works listed here as copies are regarded as autograph by other authorities. Lost works, whose catalogue numbers are preceded by “L,” are paintings whose current whereabouts are unknown which are ascribed to Caravaggio in seventeenth-century documents, inventories, and in other sources. The catalogue of lost works describes a wide variety of material, including paintings considered copies of lost originals. Entries for untraced paintings include the city where they were identified in either a seventeenth-century source or inventory (“Inv.”). Most of the inventories have been published in the Getty Provenance Index, Los Angeles. Provenance, documents and sources, inventories and selective bibliographies are provided for the paintings by, after, and attributed to Caravaggio.
