Each and every one is true. The names of those involved have not been changed. The dates in some cases are approximated, but very close to the actual dates when each of the facts or events occurred. Although a prologue is usually used in the presentation of a fictitious novel—in order to reveal information that is not necessarily consistent with the book’s storyline—this book is not a work of fiction. This book is a documentary of fact. Therefore, in order for a full disclosure and clear understanding of this book’s intent, which is to bring out of obscurity the Real Truth™ about our Book of Mormon, it is vital that the following facts and events be considered and researched before one reads the rest of this book.) On October 2, 2016, during the 186th Semiannual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS/Mormon Church), one of this church’s members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Gary E. Stevenson, gave a conference address titled, “Look to the Book, Look to the Lord.” Apostle Stevenson told the members of his church: Each of you can also receive a personal witness of this book! Do you realize the Book of Mormon was written for you—and for your day? This book is one of the blessings of living in what we call the dispensation of the fulness of times.1 Stevenson emotionally and emphatically told the members how important and blessed they were for having the Book of Mormon: 1 Elder Gary E. Interestingly, one of the Book of Mormon prophets, Moroni, saw our day—YOUR day. He even saw YOU, in vision, many hundreds of years ago! Moroni wrote: “Behold, the Lord hath shown unto me great and marvelous things concerning that day when these things,” meaning the Book of Mormon, “shall come forth among you. Behold, I speak unto you as if ye were present, and yet ye are not. But behold, Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me, and I know your doing.”2 It would appear that the overall purpose of Stevenson’s conference address was to tell the members how important gaining a personal witness of the Book of Mormon is to their faith. He challenged the Mormon youth to set aside at least 10 minutes each day for reading the Book of Mormon instead of spending “an average of seven hours a day looking at TV, computer, and smartphone screens.” The members of the LDS church revere their Twelve Apostles and other General Authorities as “special witnesses of Jesus Christ.” Most members are of the belief that these special men have actually met Jesus and received verbal instruction directly from Christ himself. The members of this church hold their leaders in the highest esteem and in great reverence. They believe that Jesus Christ himself is guiding them and giving them direction through their priesthood leaders. LDS people listen intently and carefully to their leaders’ words. Their leaders deliver their words to the members (at least in public) with the appearance of great humility and passion. The same is true in the case above with Apostle Stevenson as he explained to the Mormon people that Jesus Christ was aware of them “many hundreds of years ago.” Stevenson delivered the above quoted part of his sermon with a level of emotion that brought him near to tears.     The Cowdery Controversies By Larry Morris 2007 FAIR Conference It's really an honor to speak at the FAIR conference and I'd like to talk a little bit about a person that I have a great deal of affection for and that's Oliver Cowdery. I would like to discuss some of the controversies surrounding Oliver Cowdery. The first one that comes up is something that happened before Oliver was even born. It is known as the "Wood Scrape" and this happened in Middletown, Vermont in 1802. It was a group of people who broke away from the Congregational Church, started their own group, started using divining rods to prophesize to search for treasure, to search for lost articles. And the main participants were the Wood family of Middleton, Vermont and a man by the name of Justus Winchell. They predicted that there would be an earthquake in January of 1802 and there was quite a bit of hubbub about this in the community, quite a bit of alarm. The local militia was called out, and when the earthquake did not take place the group was disgraced and Winchell was warned out of the community and the Wood family who had been prominent prior to that, left and went to New York. A 19th century historian by the name of Barnes Frisbie wrote about this Wood Scrape and he believed it was the origin of Mormonism. Now the Cowdery family lived at that time in Wells, Vermont, which is the neighboring township next to Middleton. Frisbie got a report that this Winchell had stayed at a Cowdery home before the Wood Scrape.

Grover, Jr. PE, PG 1 Introduction When I completed publication of my last book, Geology of the Book of Mormon, I started on another research project to identify what exactly was meant by the word “ziff”, one of those undefined, untranslated words that are found in the Book of Mormon. Because of the context where ziff is found in the Book of Mormon, it is suspected to be some sort of metal. As part of my inquiry, I also looked at the metallurgy of the golden plates, as some have suggested that perhaps they consisted of ziff. While I was looking at various characteristics of the plates, and specifically at the nature of the engravings, I ran across the “Caractors” document, which in my youth many called the “Anthon transcript”. I recalled seeing the document, in my younger days, but had not really given it much thought. As I was evaluating the document to determine the character density (number of characters per square inch), I noticed something that I had really not noticed before—the bar-and-dot Mesoamerican number 9. As an engineer, I have always liked to fiddle around with numbers, so I thought to myself that it might be interesting to see if there were any other numbers there, and that perhaps by so doing I could identify a date, which would be helpful to perhaps place the document in some sort of chronological context.

GOETZMANN XHEORIES ASCRIBING a Hebrew origin to the American Indians have emerged repeatedly throughout the course of our history, each time, it seems, accompanied by an interesting tale. One of the most unusual episodes in this centuries-old tradition is the famous case of the Jewish phylactery excavated in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in the summer of 1815. This phylactery, a leather strap containing verses from the Bible and made to be worn on the head or arm in observance of Jewish custom, became the object of intense excitement among a group of clerics, scholars, and antiquaries who believed that it had been brought from the deserts of Assyria across Asia and the Bering Straits by the ancestors of the New England In- dians. Cited as proof of the Indians' Hebraic ancestry by the Vermont minister and antiquary, the Reverend Mr. Ethan Smith, reported by the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith in his church newspaper Times and Seasons, popularized by Josiah Priest in Antiquities of America, and once owned by Elias Bou- dinot, author of A Star in the West, the Pittsfield phylactery caught the attention of nearly every major nineteenth-century proponent of the Lost Tribes theory before it mysteriously disappeared. The case of the phylactery's disappearance is inextricably bound to the early history of the American Antiquarian Soci- ety; the Society briefly held the famous document and regularly received inquiries regarding the whereabouts of the phylactery for more than 150 years.
