Animals - Chap 01 22/4/02 9:48 am Page 3 The Study of Animal Behaviour 1 and its Applications Per Jensen Introduction Ethology is the science whereby we study animal behaviour, its causa- tion and its biological function. But what is behaviour? If we spend a few minutes thinking about this, a number of answers may pop up which together illustrate the complexity of the subject. In its simplest form, behaviour may be a series of muscle contractions, perhaps performed in clear response to a specific stimulus, such as in the case of a reflex. However, at the other extreme, we find enormously complex activities, such as birds migrating across the world, continuously assessing their direction and position with the help of various cues from stars, land- marks and geomagneticism. It may not be obvious which stimuli actually trigger the onset of this behaviour. Indeed, a bird kept in a cage in a win- dowless room with constant light will show strong attempts to escape and move towards the south at the appropriate time, without any apparent external cues at all. We would use the word behaviour for both these extremes, and for many other activities in between in complexity. It will include all types of activities that animals engage in, such as locomotion, grooming, repro- duction, caring for young, communication, etc. Behaviour may involve one individual reacting to a stimulus or a physiological change, but may also involve two individuals, each responding to the activities of the other. And why stop there? We would also call it behaviour when ani- mals in a herd or an aggregation coordinate their activities or compete for resources with one another. -

WIFS may parallel aspects of anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder that mostly affects females. Yet, most studies of WIFS and related models use male rats. The present study included female and male rats, where half were given wheel access to measure effects on feeding and body weight. -

Drawing from critical scholarship in dance literature, zoo studies, human-animal studies, posthuman philosophy, and experiential/somatic field studies, this work utilizes choreographic engagement, with the topography and inhabitants of the Toronto Zoo and the Berlin Zoologischer Garten, to investigate the potential for kinaesthetic exchanges between human and nonhuman subjects. Current Directions in Ecomusicology
Current Directions in Ecomusicology This volume is the first sustained examination of the complex perspectives that comprise ecomusicology—the study of the intersections of music/sound, culture/society, and nature/environment. Twenty-two authors provide a range of theoretical, methodological, and empirical chapters representing disciplines such as anthropology, biology, ecology, environmental studies, ethnomusicology, history, literature, musicology, performance studies, and psychology. They bring their specialized training to bear on interdisciplin- ary topics, both individually and in collaboration. Emerging from the whole is a view of ecomusicology as a field, a place where many disciplines come together. The topics addressed in this volume—contemporary composers and traditional musics, acoustic ecology and politicized soundscapes, mate- rial sustainability and environmental crisis, familiar and unfamiliar sounds, local places and global warming, birds and mice, hearing and listening, bio- music and soundscape ecology, and more—engage with conversations in the various realms of music study as well as in environmental studies and cultural studies. As with any healthy ecosystem, the field of ecomusicol- ogy is dynamic, but this edited collection provides a snapshot of it in a formative period. Each chapter is short, designed to be accessible to the non- specialist, and includes extensive bibliographies; some chapters also provide further materials on a companion website. An introduction and interspersed editorial summaries help guide readers through four current directions— ecological, fieldwork, critical, and textual—in the field of ecomusicology. Aaron S. MARSH, Associate Specialist, Department of Animal Physiology, University of California, Davis, California ABSTRACT: A brief survey is presented of current knowledge on olfaction in rodents and the various roles that odors may play in modifying rodent behavior. Some species at least uti lize olfactory cues: to locate food items; to recognize their mother and mates; to mark territory; as an involuntary population density regulator; possibly to recognize predators; as a warning cue against a repellent or toxic substance (poison-bait shyness); and probably, for many other behavioral purposes.
