Australia

Australian Broadcasting Corporation The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is Australia's national broadcaster. The ABC now provides radio, television, online, and mobile services throughout metropolitan and regional Australia and overseas through ABC Australia and Radio Australia. However, all domestic and external broadcasting on shortwave has been discontinued

Domestic HF Licences Changes were made to Australia's Broadcasting Act in December 2000 to permit Christian Voice International to begin using the Radio Australia shortwave transmitters in Darwin, and to allow HCJB Australia to build a new facility at Kununurra in Western Australia. If a broadcaster wants to target a domestic audience within Australia, all they need do is apply to the Australian Communications Authority for a Domestic HF Licence (DHFL). It costs a few hundred dollars and the lower range frequency allocations are specifically exempt from ITU Regulations. The frequencies available are anywhere in the range 2300-26100 for broadcasting 'within Australia and its territories' and the following frequency blocks are only available for the DHFL broadcasters: 2300-2495, 3200-3400, 3950-4000, 4750-4995 and 5005-5060 kHz. The power of these stations is typically 1 kW.

Radio 4KZ Located in Innisfail since 1967, Radio 4KZ covers the tropical coast of Far North Queensland on 531 kHz and FM. Its shortwave transmitter was launched on 20 December 2017 to serve the remote areas of north Queensland. Transmitter Site: Innisfail, Queensland - 1 kW. Time/UTC Days Language kHz 2000-1000v Daily English 5055

Ron Howard comments: "5055, Radio 4KZ, on Sept 3, with xmtr off at 1002:00* UT; continuing to go off the air about five seconds earlier each day, via a timer; whereas back on June 5, noted cutting off close to 1300:45*, so they have since made their usual seasonal schedule change" (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, Calif. (near Monterey), via WOR iog)

Bhutan

Bhutan Broadcasting Service BBS is currently inactive on shortwave. It broadcast on 6035 kHz daily from 0555 to approximately 1900 local time (0000- 1300v UTC) and appears to have been last reported in November 2020 by Ron Howard.

Ron's report read: "BHUTAN. 6035, BBS. Had been checking here around 1115, which is normally a good time to catch their signal before cutting off about 1130*, but recently nothing was heard. Perhaps today's log explains why? Nov 23, tuned into 6035, at 1033, to hear an announcer clearly in English, but only bits and pieces made out; also playing some pop songs; suddenly cut off at 1044*. A new, early closing time? Needs more monitoring. (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, California, 23 November 2020, WOR iog) ... but it appears not to have been reported since.

Identifying Sound of Hope (Taiwan) vs CNR-1 jamming

Sound of Hope (SOH) is quite often jammed by a transmission of China National Radio's CNR-1 service from Mainland China. Ron Howard offered some tips on how to identify SOH in a post to the WOR iog on 17 May 2021.

For me, it has always been fun trying to tie down if a station heard is really a Sound of Hope reception or just the CNR-1 program jamming. Here are a few suggestions, based on years of observations:

1) One positive way is to listen at the top-of-the-hour. CNR-1 programming always has time pips, while SOH never has any.

2) Find a known CNR-1 frequency, that is to say a non-jamming frequency (I use 6125 kHz.), then check to find if it is // to the station in question.

3) SOH is a religious station, so has a more refined format. At ToH usually has news and then a lot of monologues. Rather rare to hear music. While the CNR-1 format is fairly contemporary; many short segments; often with music; in general has a much more upbeat format than SOH.

4) After many years of listening to SOH, I find their audio slightly muffled; not a lot, just enough to be noticeable, especially when compared to the crisp audio of CNR-1.

5) It is not uncommon for SOH to be slightly off-frequency; while CNR-1 is on the exact frequency (xx.00).

6) Finally, if the station in question has fair to good reception, it almost certainly is CNR-1 jamming. SOH stations use rather low power, hence fair-good reception would be extremely rare.

7) If you are fortunate enough to actually hear SOH, their top-of-the-hour ID is "Xiwang zhi sheng guoji guangbo diantai" (Sound of Hope international broadcast station), given twice (once by OM and once by YL), then into the news. My audio of a typical ToH SOH ID format is posted at http://bit.ly/3l6V2kn.

KTWR to increase DRM air time to India

When the computer-generated Tamil broadcasts end in September, KTWR will again increase its DRM air time to India. Starting the first Sunday of October, they will air human-voiced programmes on DRM in the non-English block to India. Instead of starting at 1014 UTC on Sundays, the broadcasts will start at 0957 UTC. End time for the non-English block will remain at 1026 UTC. The languages and times will be as listed below:

1st/3rd Sundays 2nd/4th Sundays Tamil - 15 min Tamil - 15 min Malayalam - 7 min Telugu - 7 min Kannada - 7 min Hindi - 7 min

5th Sunday programming will be all Tamil.

KTWR say they realise that the non-Tamil language segments may seem very short. The point of these broadcasts is to include more people in the DRM tests they are doing. It is also hoped that there will be more demand for DRM-capable receivers in these language groups.

All KTWR DRM broadcasts to India will remain on 15200 kHz for the rest of the A21 season. For B21, which starts 31 October, DRM broadcasts to India will be on 13800 kHz"

Thanmks to Jose Jacob for passing on these details.

See the entry below for North Korean target broadcasts for the schedule.

Why Yamata transmitters can not broadcast the program of "Furusato no Kaze

Ron Howard made a very useful comment on the WOR iog on 10 June 2021: "It might be worthwhile to be reminded of a past posting by Glenn, with info from online":

Currently 3 programs "Shiokaze", "Furusato no Kaze" and "Nippon no Kaze" are broadcast towards North Korea from VT Communications, and only "Shiokaze" is transmitted from Yamata. Why Yamata transmitter can not send the message of "Furusato no Kaze" towards North Korea?

Japanese law on broadcasting says only NHK can broadcast "international service". And government controlled the license of broadcasting – it is quite difficult to get the permission (license) of broadcasting promptly.

At the opening announcement of Shiokaze, they announce call sign as JSR. Exactly speaking, JSR is not call sign for "general" radio stations. Shiokaze got a license for "special utility broadcast" - same as Traffic Information Service Radio on 1620 kHz - not for "general broadcast". [So Shiokaze is not really a "clandestine" station - Ron]

In the case of "Furusato no Kaze", they get neither the license of "utility broadcast" nor "general broadcast". And NHK reject the proposal of Japanese government to broadcast "Furusato no Kaze" within the program of Radio Japan. Thus Yamata transmitter can not send message of "Furusato no Kaze." [nor can they broadcast "Nippon no Kaze" - Ron]

Malaysia observations from Ron Howard

Here is a list of the five Islamic call-to-prayer times for Kuching (Sarawak) for Thursday 23 September 2021. Muslims are called-to-prayer five times a day. These are carried via Sarawak FM (9835 kHz.) and the prayers are always about 3 to 4 minutes long. They are different from the usual reciting from the Qur'an. Is easy to ID them by their unique individual timings and during the prayer, many references to "Allah akbar." Wai FM (11665 kHz.) is a more secular station and doesn't air these prayers or recitings from the Qur'an.

Supporters of Myanmar opposition launch radio channel

Excerpts from VOA News report, 27 August 2021

WASHINGTON - A radio station supported by Myanmar's shadow government has aired its first broadcasts as part of an effort to keep the country informed nearly seven months into the coup. Radio NUG airs for 30 minutes twice daily on a shortwave band that smaller transistor devices, including 10-band radios, can easily receive.

The station plans to cover the National Unity Government (NUG); human rights abuses allegedly perpetrated by the junta; and the civil disobedience movement, a pro-democracy campaign that leads anti-coup protests around the country. The NUG is a shadow government made up of members of the ousted National League for Democracy, activists and others from ethnic minorities. It was formed after the military claimed control in a February coup, ousted the democratically elected leadership and arrested senior politicians.

The NUG does not officially run the radio channel, but it is providing guidance to supporters who set up the station, according to Htin Linn Aung, the NUG minister of communications, information and technology. "We [the NUG] have to let them know what we are doing - how we are trying to restore democracy in Burma," Aung, who is living in the United States, told VOA. Burma is another name for Myanmar.

Banned from the start

Myanmar's military leaders outlawed the station on the day it first broadcast. The junta's Ministry of Information issued a statement in state media saying that those working with or supporting Radio NUG "will have action taken against them in accordance with the law."

Myanmar's military has historically limited press freedom. But since the overthrow of the civilian-led government in February, the military has targeted journalists, rights groups say.

Radios allegedly confiscated

The current media landscape in Myanmar makes Radio NUG even more important because Myanmar completely lacks press freedom, said Aung, the NUG communications minister. Using radio also means the station can reach listeners even if authorities cut access to the internet. "This could be the perfect medium for the Myanmar public to keep receiving free information," East Asia bureau head of Reporters Without Borders Cédric Alviani told VOA. "This is a very traditional resistance medium."

Some local news websites reported an increase in people buying radio receivers since the station launched. But at least one news website reported that the military had confiscated radios following the launch of the channel. VOA was not able to verify those reports.

The identities of those running the channel are not publicly available because of safety concerns, and Aung said he is worried that those working with Radio NUG could face retaliation. He declined to say where broadcasts originate.

Still, Alviani and Aung both said the response from the military shows it fears a free press. "The fact the regime immediately tries to confiscate these radio receivers shows how much they fear the power of free information," Alviani told VOA. VOA Burma contributed to this report.

Sơn tây - Lễ khê 2020/12 Drone Still Imagery: Ian Baxter (Shortwavesites) comments: "Here's a 360 degree spherical drone imagery view of the entire 'Sơn tây - Lễ khê' TX site. Imagery is absolutely awesome from a coverage perspective, although the dull day either due to pollution or mist/showers has spoilt the resolution. That said everything is there to see from this single point, hover down & you're looking down over one of the curtain arrays or caged dipoles. I believe this is the first total still 360 degree SPHERICAL drone view imagery of a SW TX site that I've seen to date. Nice."
