NEWSLETTER 1 Protestbrief an den König – die Göttinger Sieben GESCHICHTE Erinnern an die „Göttinger Sieben“ Zwei Denkmäler erinnern in Nie der sach sen noch heute an jene sieben Pro fes soren der www.klett.de Göttinger Georg-August-Uni versität, die un- ter dem Namen „Göttinger Sieben“ in die Ge schichte eingegangen sind. Während seit dem Jahr 1998 ein Fi gu ren en semble des Bildhauers Flo riano Bodi ni am nieder- sächsischen Landtag an die sieben Protes- tie ren den erinnert, mutet ein erst jüngst im Jahr 2011 von Günter Grass gestiftetes Denk- mal für die sieben Professoren auf dem Göt- tinger Uni-Campus eher abstrakt an. Sowohl Bodini als auch Grass verstehen ihre Skulp- turen als Denk mäler für Mut und Zivil cou- rage. Bis heute werden die „Göttinger Sieben“ als aufrechte Vorkämpfer für bür gerliche Rech te und demokratische Freiheiten be- trachtet. Ihre Protest aktion gegen den König von Han nover im Jahr 1837 gilt als mutiges Signal im Kampf gegen die ab solutis tische Fürstenwillkür. Schon bei den Zeitgenossen erregte ihr Protest große Aufmerksamkeit. Und auch in späteren Jahren blieb ihre Po- pularität nahezu ungebrochen. Kistner University of Washington Abstract Organizing Knowledge: Comparative Structures of Intersubjectivity in Nineteenth-Century Historical Dictionaries Kelly Kistner Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Gary G. Hamilton Sociology Between 1838 and 1857 language scholars throughout Europe were inspired to create a new kind of dictionary. Deemed historical dictionaries, their projects took an unprecedented leap in style and scale from earlier forms of lexicography. These lexicographers each sought to compile historical inventories of their national languages and were inspired by the new scientific approach of comparative philology. For them, this science promised a means to illuminate general processes of social change and variation, as well as the linguistic foundations for cultural and national unity. This study examines two such projects: The German Dictionary, Deutsches Worterbuch, of the Grimm Brothers, and what became the Oxford English Dictionary. Both works utilized collaborative models of large-scale, long-term production, yet the content of the dictionaries would differ in remarkable ways. The German dictionary would be characterized by its lack of definitions of meaning, its eclectic treatment of entries, rich analytical prose, and self- referential discourse; whereas the English dictionary would feature succinct, standardized, and impersonal entries. Using primary source materials, this research investigates why the dictionaries came to differ. -

The landgraviate of Thuringia The Ludovingian dynasty reached its peak in 1040. The Wartburg Castle (built in 1067) was the symbol of the Ludovingian power. In 1131 Luis I. received the title of Landgrave (Earl). With this new political landgraviate groundwork, Thuringia became one of the most influential principalities. It was directly subordinated to the King and therefore had an analogous power to the traditional ducats of Bavaria, Saxony and Swabia. Moreover, the sons of the Landgraves were married to the aristocratic houses of the European elite (in 1221 the marriage between Luis I and Isabel of Hungary was consummated). Landgrave Hermann I. was a beloved patron of art. Under his government (1200-1217) the court of Thuringia was transformed into one of the most important centers for cultural life in Europe. -

Read the speech online: www.bundespraesident.de Page 1 of 6 Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the inauguration of the Robert-Blum-Saal with artworks depicting Germany’s history of democracy at Schloss Bellevue on 9 November 2020 According to legend, the last words of Robert Blum were “I die for freedom, may my country remember me.” He was executed – shot – by imperial military forces on 9 November 1848, one day before his 41st birthday. The German democrat and champion for freedom, one of the most well-known members of the Frankfurt National Assembly, thus died on a heap of sand in Brigittenau, a Viennese suburb. The bullets ended the life of a man who had fought tirelessly for a Germany unified in justice and in freedom – as a political publicist, publisher and founder of the Schillerverein in Leipzig, as a parliamentarian in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt, and finally with a gun in his hand on the barricades in Vienna. To the very last, Robert Blum fought for a German nation-state in the republican mould, legitimised by parliamentary structures. He campaigned for a brand of democracy in which civil liberties and human rights were accorded to one and all. And he fought for a Europe in which free peoples should live together in peace, from France to Poland and to Hungary. His death on 9 November 1848 marked one of the many turning points in our history. By executing the parliamentarian Robert Blum, the princes and military commanders of the Ancien Régime demonstrated their power and sent an unequivocal message to the Paulskirche National Assembly. -

A string of pleasant seaside towns with generous beaches and a laid-back atmosphere lacking the clueless crowds? Yes, please. We’ll take two. One of the main hotspots here is Rügen, Germany’s largest island, which lies on the eastern edge of the coast towards the Polish border. Spanning some 350 square miles, it has an abundance of sand, quaint fishing villages, and national parks with chalky cliffs. Major events like the Störtebeker Festival open-air theatre show, in Ralswiek, take place here as well, and the 200-year-old Putbus Theater is as regal as they come. Note: A 100-year-old narrow-gauge railway called “Raging Roland” connects many of the island’s resorts.
