RBI launches ombudsman scheme for digital payments

The Reserve Bank of India has launched the

ombudsman scheme for digital payments, the banking

regulator announced in a release today. It had first

spoken about the scheme in the December 5 monetary

policy statement promising to create a separate

ombudsman for digital payments. Laying out the

jurisdiction of the functioning, the RBI said that the new ombudsman will start working from

the 21 existing offices of the Banking Ombudsman and work within the existing territorial

jurisdictions.

GST collections cross Rs 1 lakh crore in January: Finance Ministry

GST collections have jumped to Rs 1 lakh crore in January

this year from the Rs 94,726 crore collected in December

last year, Finance Ministry said today. This has been a

significant improvement over collection of Rs 94,725 crore

during last month and Rs 89,825 crore during the same

month last year. Final figures and details of collections for

the entire month will be intimated on February 2, the ministry said in a statement. This is only

the second time when the collections have crossed Rs 1 lakh crore in this fiscal after April.

RBI Lifted up the restrictions on BoI, Bank of Maharashtra, Oriental Bank of Commerce

On 1st February, RBI has eased out the

operational curbs on 3 banks, Bank of India

(BoI), Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) and

Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) and

also allowed them to have a exit from the

Prompt Corrective Action ( PCA)

framework fully. These three banks were part of 11 government-owned banks that were put

under the Prompt Corrective Action framework in 2017 and 2018. And the government gave a

capital infusion of Rs 10,000 crore for Bank of India, Rs 5,500 crore for Oriental Bank of

Commerce and Rs 4,500 crore for Bank of Maharashtra, which helped the banks to come out of

the framework.

RBI cuts repo rate, reverse repo rate in its 6th bi-monthly Monetary Policy of 2018- 19

The Reserve Bank of India in its bi-monthly

monetary policy has reduced repo rate by 25

basis points to 6.25%. RBI's 6-member monetary

policy committee also brought down reverse repo

rate to 6%. The repo rate is the rate at which the

Reserve Bank lends short-term money to the

banks, while the reserve repo rate is the rate at

which the central bank borrows money from commercial banks. It was the first policy review by

the RBI after appointment of its governor Shaktikanta Das in December last year. The RBI

governor said that they expect GDP growth rate to be at 7.4% in fiscal 2019-20 which is up from

7.2% estimated for financial year 2018-19 by central statistical organization.

RBI raises collateral-free farm loan limit to Rs 1.6 lakh

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has announced

that the limit of collateral free agricultural loans

has been increased from one lakh to 1.6 lakh.

Addressing the post monetary policy

announcement in Mumbai on 7th February, Mr. Das

said the decision has been taken in view of the

overall inflation and rise in the agricultural input costs since 2010 when the limit was last

India becomes world's 2nd largest LPG consumer and Importer after government's Ujjwala push

India is now the 2nd largest consumer and

importer of the LPG in the world. This is

attributed to government initiatives to push for

cleaner alternatives to traditional cooking fuels

LPG grew by 12.5% over the past five years to

12 million metric tons (13 million tons) in 2018-19. India now stands at 2nd place behind China.

PM Modi inaugurates DD Arun Prabha TV channel and Sela tunnel project in Arunachal Pradesh

On 9th February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi

launched the DD ‘Arun Prabha’ Channel in

Itanagar. It will be a 24x7 satellite television

channel and is Doordarshan’s second channel for

the north-eastern region, after DD North East.

Modi has also laid the foundation stone of the

Sela Tunnel Project in Arunachal Pradesh. Once completed, the project would provide all-

weather connectivity to Tawang and forward areas. Sela Tunnel Project is estimated to cost Rs.

687 crore. It is being constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and is expected to be

completed in the next three years. It covers a total distance of 12.04 kilometers and consists of

two tunnels of 1790 and 475 meters each.

RBI slaps fine of Rs 1 crore on State Bank of India

State Bank of India Thursday said the Reserve

Bank of India has slapped Rs 1 crore penalty on

the country's largest lender for violating norms.

RBI "in exercise of powers conferred under

Section 47 A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949

has levied a penalty of Rupees one crore on the

bank for not monitoring the end use of funds in respect of one of its borrowers," SBI said in a

regulatory filing.

RBI imposes monetary penalty on seven banks for violation of norms

The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a

monetary penalty of Rs. 1.50 crore each on

Allahabad Bank, Bank of Maharashtra and

Indian Overseas Bank, and Rs. 1 crore on

Andhra Bank. The penalty has been imposed

on the public sector banks (PSBs) for non-

compliance with various directions issued on monitoring of end use of funds, exchange of

information with other banks, classification and reporting of frauds, and on restructuring of

accounts. The central bank also imposed a monetary penalty of Rs. 20 lakh each on HDFC

Bank, IDBI Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank for non-compliance with various directions

Retail inflation dips further to 2.05% in January; lowest in 19 months

Retail inflation fell to a 19-month low of 2.05% in

January due to fall in prices of food articles, mainly

fruit and vegetables, coupled with easing of fuel

cost, government data showed on 12th February.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based retail

inflation was revised downwards for the preceding

month December to 2.11% from the earlier estimate of 2.19%, showed data from the Central

Statistics Office (CSO). In the year-ago month, January 2018, the retail inflation was at 5.07%.

Wholesale inflation falls to 10-month low of 2.76% in January

India's wholesale inflation fell to a 10-month low

of 2.76 percent in January 2019 as against 3.80

percent in December 2018, helped by a smaller

increase in prices of manufactured goods and fuel

products, government data released on Thursday

showed. The core inflation data for the month of

January was at 2.9 percent as compared to 4.2

percent, monthly. Wholesale inflation in food rose to 1.84 percent as against 0.07 percent in

December 2018. WPI inflation in primary articles also rose to 3.54 percent versus 2.28 percent in

the previous month.

RBI to transfer Rs 28,000 cr interim dividend to government

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its board

dividend payout by the RBI to the government

in FY19 stands at Rs 68,000 crore. The RBI

follows the July-June fiscal calendar. According to a written reply by Finance Ministry in Rajya

the government.

Kerala: Thiruvananthapuram to host Attukal Pongala, world's largest religious congregation of women

In Kerala, the capital city of

Thiruvananthapuram is all prepared to host the

Attukal Pongala festival which is considered as

prepare 'Pongala'- the offering in makeshift brick

stoves to worship the presiding deity of Attukal

Union Government relaxes Angel Tax norms for start-ups from 7 years to 10 years

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry in an

attempt to provide relief to and boost investments

into start-ups in India, has decided to simplify the

process for them to get exemptions under the

Income Tax Act, 1961. It will now recognize an

entity as a start-up up to 10 years from the date of

its incorporation or registration instead of the

existing duration of 7 years. It will also recognize an entity as a start-up if its turnover for any of

the financial years since its incorporation or registration does not exceed Rs 100 crore unlike the

previous amount of Rs 25 crore. Under Section 56 (2) (viib) of Income Tax Act, a start-up will be

eligible for exemption if it is a private limited company recognised by the Department for

Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

12 State-run banks set to get Rs 48,239 crore fund infusion

The Finance Ministry on 20th February announced to

pump in Rs 48,239 crore in 12 public sector banks

(PSBs) in this fiscal to help them maintain regulatory

capital requirements and finance growth plans. With

this funding, the total amount of capital infusion

would increase to Rs 1,00,958 crore of the planned

recapitalisation of Rs 1.06 lakh crore for PSBs for the current fiscal, according to Financial

Services Secretary Rajiv Kumar. The remaining Rs 5,000 crore capital infusion would be used as

a buffer for any contingency or growth capital for Bank of Baroda which is in the process of

merging Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank with itself. Corporation Bank is the biggest beneficiary of

this round of capital infusion with Rs 9,086 crore of funding, followed by Allahabad Bank with

Vijaya Bank, Dena Bank merger with Bank of Baroda to be effective from Apr 1

April 1 as per the scheme of amalgamation approved

amalgamation of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with

government notification. The government in September last year had announced merger of

state-owned Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank, with larger peer Bank of Baroda, aiming to create the

third largest lender after SBI and ICICI Bank.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a

giant Bhagavad Gita, running into 670 pages

and weighing 800 kg, at the ISKCON temple in

New Delhi on 26th February. Measuring over

2.8 meters and over 800 kg, the 'Astounding

Bhagavad Gita' is one of the kind in the world.

It will have the original verses of Bhagwad Gita along with commentary.

India-Bangladesh joint military exercise 'Sampriti 2019' in Tangail

A joint military exercise Sampriti 2019 between

India and Bangladesh will be conducted at

RBI removes Allahabad Bank, Corporation Bank, Dhanlaxmi Bank from PCA framework

In a statement, RBI said the Board for Financial

Supervision (BFS) reviewed the performance of

banks under PCA and noted that the government

has infused fresh capital on February 21 into

various banks including some of the banks

currently under the PCA framework. "Of these

banks, the Board for Financial Supervision (BFS) noted that Allahabad Bank and Corporation

Bank had received Rs 6896 crore and Rs 9086 crore respectively. This has shored up their

Following a six month ban on starting new

accounts by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI),

Paytm Payments Banks has launched a zero

balance current account with features such as

unlimited free digital transactions and free debit

card etc. This new feature targets individuals,

sole business owners and other small businesses who could not meet the minimum required

balance of current accounts offered by traditional banks.

National Science Day: 28 February

National Science Day is celebrated in India on 28

February each year to mark the discovery of the

Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir C V Raman on

28 February 1928. For his discovery, Sir C.V. Raman

was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.

This phenomenon, subsequently known as Raman

scattering, results from the Raman Effect. In 1954,

India honoured him with its highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna.

IDBI Bank appoints LIC's Hemant Bhargava as non-executive chairman

IDBI Bank has appointed Hemant Bhargava as

non-executive, non-whole time chairman. Bhargava

is currently the Chairman (in-charge) and

of India (LIC). The bank said Bhargava has been

appointed for three years or until he continues in

his position at LIC. The life insurer is now the

The National Book Trust (NBT) has appointed

educationist and author Govind Prasad Sharma as its

new Chairman. NBT, an autonomous organisation under

India has been ranked 47th in the overall

"Inclusive Internet Index 2019" score while

Sweden topped the chart, followed by
