1 Listen Carefully Ellen Foyn Bruun1 Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU, Drama and Theatre Studies Abstract Voice and sounding is an integrated element in dramatherapy, as in acting and life in general. In this article I reflect on voicework that focuses on the intimate relationship between breathing, sounding and an embodied sense of self. The notion of listen carefully emphasises the receptive aspect of arts practice and introversion as a foundation for authentic and healthy expression. I address ‘the presence of absence’ and our ability to listen with awareness to what is implicit and not yet made conscious. I have been inspired by feminist philosopher Adriana Cavarero who proposes a philosophy of voice that challenges logo-centric Western philosophical thinking. Her work underpins the relationship between voice and identity. I shall draw from my experience of three different approaches that integrate vocal somatic exploration and a holistic approach to life and health. These are the legacy of Roy Hart and Alfred Wolfsohn, Movement with touch and sound (Sesame), and Fitzmaurice Voicework®. This article caters for a broad professional community that is interested in the field of voice in drama and theatre practice for educational and therapeutic purposes. As dramatherapists we relate to body, breathing and voice in many ways. This article will present how voicework has become a core field of interest for me as a drama practitioner, teacher, therapist and researcher. -

Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD) in Sachsen Während des Ersten Weltkriegs spalteten sich auch in Sachsen die Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD) in einen Unabhängigen (USPD) und einen Mehrheitsflügel (MSPD). Jedoch trat nur der Bezirk Leipzig benahe geschlossen zur USPD über, so dass die MSPD bis auf regionale Ausnahmen in den meisten Gebieten Sachsens ihre dominante Position innerhalb der Arbeiterschaft behaupten konnte. Da jedoch die nach der Novemberrevolution 1918 auch in Sachsen gebildete sozialliberale Koalition – die SPD hatte bei den Wahlen zur Volkskammer am 2. Februar 1919 41,6% der Stimmen bzw. 42 Mandate gewonnen – in Verbindung mit Reichswehr und Freikorps gegen revoltierende Arbeiter einschritt und gleichzeitig prinzipiell eine Mehrheit für eine sozialistische Einheitsregierung bestand, schwenkte die MSPD immer weiter nach links. Gleichzeitig erneuerte sich die schon vor dem Kriege bestehende Polarisierung zwischen sozialistischen und bürgerlichen Parteien, die in der Folgezeit eine Zusammenarbeit beider Lager erschwerte, oft sogar verhinderte. Nach den Landtagswahlen am 14. November 1920, bei denen die SPD nur noch auf 28,3% bzw. 27 Mandate kam, setzte sich schließlich die Richtung durch, die eine von der Kommunistischen Partei Deutschlands (KPD) tolerierte Koalition aus MSPD und USPD einer Zusammenarbeit mit Deutscher Demokratischer Partei (DDP) und Deutscher Volkspartei (DVP) vorzog. Die linksrepublikanische Regierung betrieb energische Reformen insbesondere in den Bereichen Schul- und Kommunalpolitik, im Justiz- und Polizeiwesen sowie in der Wirtschaft. Im Herbst 1922 vereinigten sich beide Parteien relativ konfliktfrei zur Vereinigten SPD (VSPD). Die wiedervereinigte Partei kam bei den Landtagswahlen am 5. November 1922 wieder auf 41,8%. -

83 Jonathan Zatlin links: Jonathan Zatlin rechts: Guilt by Association Guilt by Association Julius Barmat and German Democracy* Abstract Although largely forgotten today, the so-called “Barmat Affair” resulted in the longest trial in the Weimar Republic’s short history and one of its most heated scandals. The antidemocratic right seized upon the ties that Julius Barmat, a Jewish businessman of Ukrainian provenance, maintained to prominent socialists to discredit Weimar by equat- ing democracy with corruption, corruption with Jews, and Jews with socialists. The left responded to the right’s antidemocratic campaign with reasoned refutations of the idea that democracy inevitably involved graft. Few socialist or liberal politicians, however, responded to the right’s portrayal of Weimar as “Jewish.” The failure of the left to identify antisemitism as a threat to democracy undermined attempts to democratize the German judiciary and ultimately German society itself. And then it started like a guilty thing Upon a fearful summons.1 In a spectacular operation on New Year’s Eve 1924, the Berlin state prosecutor’s office sent some 100 police officers to arrest Julius Barmat and two of his four brothers. With an eye toward capturing headlines, the prosecutors treated Barmat as a dangerous criminal, sending some 20 policemen to arrest him, his wife, and his 13-year old son in his villa in Schwanenwerder, an exclusive neighbourhood on the Wannsee. The police even brought along a patrol boat to underscore their concern that Barmat might try to escape custody via the river Havel. The arrests of Barmat’s leading managers and alleged co-conspirators over the next few days were similarly sensational and faintly ridiculous. -

Januar 1933; der Brand des Reichstages in Berlin am 27. Februar und die einen Tag spater erlassene ,,Notverordnung des Reichsprasidenten zum Schutz von Volk und Staat"; der erste Boykott jiidischer Ge- schafte am 1. April; die Auflosung der Gewerkschaften am 2. Mai und die Biicherverbrennung vom 10. Mai, mit der ein Grossteil der lite- rarischen und wissenschaftlichen Produktion der Weimarer Periode als ,,geistiger Unflat" und ,,jiidische Entartung" verdammt wurde; schliesslich das Verbot der SPD am 22. Juni und das ,,Gesetz gegen die Neubildung von Parteien" vom 14. A 1940 self-portrait of Salomon (1917-1943), whose autobiographical work “Life? or Theatre?” is an early example of the graphic novel. Courtesy the Jewish Historical Museum © Charlotte Salomon Foundation n February, 1943, eight months before she was murdered in Auschwitz, the I German painter Charlotte Salomon killed her grandfather. Salomon’s grandparents, like many Jews, had !ed Germany in the mid-nineteen-thirties, with a stash of “morphine, opium, and Veronal” to use “when their money ran out.” But Salomon’s crime that morning was not a mercy killing to save the old man from the Nazis; this was entirely personal. It was Herr Doktor Lüdwig Grünwald, not “Herr Hitler,” who, Salomon wrote, “symbolized for me the people I had to resist.” And resist she did. She documented the event in real time, in a thirty-"ve-page letter, most of which has only recently come to light. “I knew where the poison was,” Salomon wrote. “It is acting as I write. Perhaps he is already dead now. Forgive me.” Salomon also describes how she drew a portrait of her grandfather as he expired in front of her, from the “Veronal omelette” she had cooked for him. The ink drawing of a distinguished, wizened man—his head slumped inside the collar of his bathrobe, his eyes closed, his mouth a thin slit nesting inside his voluminous beard—survives. Salomon’s letter is addressed, repeatedly, to her “beloved” Alfred Wolfsohn, for whom she created her work. He never received the missive. Nineteen pages of Salomon’s “confession,” as she called it, were concealed by her family for more than sixty years, the murder excised. -

Report for the Year 2018 An overview of management performance and of accounting records for 2017 was audited by the Audit Committee of the Association through the review of banking records. The management report for 2017 was subsequently sent to the Municipal Court in Prague, into a file of documents of the Register of recorded Associations. The Association informed the Tax Office that pursuant to Section 38mb No. 586/1992 Coll. Of the Income Taxe Code, it was not required to file an income tax return for 2017. In 2018 the Association sent to all 2017 donors for tax purposes a confirmation of the acceptance of their donations. In 2018 we duly accounted for the gift of the Hagibor Foundation for the year 2017. The Hagibor Foundation confirmed by mail on July 10, 2018 the accuracy of the accounting. All financial operations in 2018 were performed exclusively via bank transfers. This management method has proved to be good and the Board proposes to proceed in the future the same way. The rejection of cash contributions during individual activities, though it reduces small donations, it keeps everything transparent and clear to members, donors, and for bookkeepers. In 2018, the Hagibor Foundation accepted the Association's request to support our charitable activities and those benefiting the Hagibor Social Welfare Home (DSPH) and provided a contribution of CZK 8,000,000. -
Why Do Singers Sing in the Way They
Why do singers sing in the way they do? Why, for example, is western classical singing so different from pop singing? How is it that Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe could sing together? These are the kinds of questions which John Potter, a singer of international repute and himself the master of many styles, poses in this fascinating book, which is effectively a history of singing style. He finds the reasons to be primarily ideological rather than specifically musical. His book identifies particular historical 'moments of change' in singing technique and style, and relates these to a three-stage theory of style based on the relationship of singing to text. There is a substantial section on meaning in singing, and a discussion of how the transmission of meaning is enabled or inhibited by different varieties of style or technique. Appendix Einstein’s FBI file – reports on Albert Einstein’s Berlin period 322 Appendix German archives are not the only place where Einstein dossiers can be found. Leaving aside other countries, at least one personal dossier exists in the USA: the Einstein File of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).1036 This file holds 1,427 pages. In our context the numerous reports about Ein- stein’s “Berlin period” are of particular interest. Taking a closer look at them does not lead us beyond the scope of this book. On the contrary, these reports give a complex picture of Einstein’s political activities during his Berlin period – albeit from a very specific point of view: the view of the American CIC (Counter Intelligence Corps) and the FBI of the first half of the 1950s. The core of these reports is the allegation that Einstein had cooperated with the communists and that his address (or “office”) had been used from 1929 to 1932 as a relay point for messages by the CPG (Communist Party of Germany, KPD), the Communist International and the Soviet Secret Service. The ultimate aim of these investigations was, reportedly, to revoke Einstein’s United States citizenship and banish him. Space constraints prevent a complete review of the individual reports here. These reports are dated 13 March 1950 and 25 January 1951. 13 March 1950 The first comprehensive report by the CIC (Hq. 66th CIC Detachment)1037 about Einstein’s complicity in activities by the CPG and the Soviet Secret Service be- tween 1929 and 1932 is dated 13 March 1950.1038 Army General Staff only submit- ted this letter to the FBI on 7 September 1950. -

Dieses mehrere 100 Jahre alte Exemplar ist ein geschütztes Naturdenkmal und die stärkste Alteiche des Grunewaldes. 25 Das große Fenster erhielt seinen Namen wegen des freien Ausblicks nach Spandau.
