Press Release Sean Scully The 12 / Dark Windows Sean Scully’s Studio, 447 West 17th Street, Chelsea, New York Lisson Gallery, 508 West 24th Street, New York 6 May – 17 June, 2021 The world in which we live, the existential threat from COVID and the environmental problems we face, has influenced me greatly in my art. - Sean Scully, 2021 Sean Scully will open a dual-presentation across two sites in Chelsea, New York, this May, unveiling new work created in his New York studio throughout 2020 and 2021, while the world was rocked by a global pandemic, extensive quarantine measures, Black Lives Matter protests, political instability and mass uncertainty. At Scully’s Chelsea studio, open exclusively for this showcase, the artist unveils a monumental new work entitled The 12 (2020), presented in its entirety for the first time. This twelve-panel piece is a grouping of Landline paintings, each with its own distinct personality ranging from spirited to sombre. A new Black Square Blue (2020) painting will also be on view at Scully's studio. The dual presentation continues at Lisson Gallery's flagship space on 508 West 24th Street which will house a significant multi-panelled painting entitled Dark Windows (2020): a suite of works created during some of the bleakest days of the COVID pandemic. The work will be presented alongside a series of new pastel drawings recently completed by the artist. The 12, a work comprising twelve unique Landline paintings, is an expansion on Scully’s ongoing series of lyrical paintings in which, since 1999, he has endeavoured to “integrate all the parts” of the horizon – physical and philosophical, poetic and pastoral.

Press Release Ryan Gander These are the markers of our time 10 September – 21 October 2020 508 West 24th Street, New York “For all their concern for promoting individuality as opposed to collectivity, fractioning as opposed to solidifying, communitarianism as opposed to commonality, to the subjects of identity politics and the internet, the hyper-real and the not so real, and your nostalgic hankerings in a quest to slow time... you are perhaps somewhat missing the point, or at least the subject. These are not the subjects of your time, these are only the consequences of your time. Time… That is the subject of your time.” - Extract from Ryan Gander, ‘The End’ (February, 2020) Ryan Gander will open Lisson Gallery’s new space in New York with an exhibition hiGhliGhtinG time as the new currency, reflectinG on how – in an aGe of identity politics, selfie culture and an incessant need to shout the loudest – the focus of our time should be on the value of time itself. The exhibition is made up of many individual works that create a whole, like chapters in a book, but with no linear beginning or end. Upon entering the space, the visitor is presented with a feeling of disarray – from broken glass to graphite marks on the walls – where each work is a piece of the puzzle, referencinG Gander’s interest in chance, serendipity and storytellinG, layinG out a series of clues and markers to be decrypted. • Press Release Julian Opie
Press Release Julian Opie 7 November 2020 – 27 February 2021 2/F, 27 Huqiu Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai Opening: Friday 6 November, 5 – 7pm Lisson Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of all new work by renowned British artist Julian Opie, for his first solo exhibition with the gallery in Shanghai. The presentation features seven works depicting new subjects (all 2020) in a variety of media, with three large-scale group portraits, three stand-alone sculptures, and one moving computer animation. In this new body of work, Opie draws on the ubiquitous imagery of urban scenes and the cityscape, recalling the vocabulary of everyday life but instilling it with a new energy and vitality. The show coincides with Opie’s presentation as part of the Jing'an International Sculpture Project in Shanghai, as well as the unveiling of his commission for the Huarun Group Embankment Square Pudong. Opie, renowned globally for his contribution to contemporary art, draws on influences as diverse as billboard signs, contemporary dance, classical portraiture and sculpture. A central motif of Opie’s work is the human figure, whether depicted running, posing, walking or dancing, alone or in crowded cities. These portraits – found in public spaces in many major cities across the world – reflect the artist’s preoccupation with exploring the very nature of representation and the means by which it is perceived and understood. The artist’s bold colours and radically simplified forms can be seen here in the lightboxes, Old Street May 2. and Old Street June 1. where striking figures in white, yellow and black silhouette against vibrant orange and blue backdrops, alongside the quieter palette, Old Street August 12.

It was within this recent historical context that I came to know Ted stamm 1990 (1989) Stamm and to appreciate his work. It was also within this context that I came to understand the kind of commitment and personal strength ESSAY BY ROBERT C. MORGAN required to maintain an “outsider” position when the art market takes an abrupt shift. I perceived in Stamm’s paintings, and later in his discourse, an extraordinary energy, a dynamicism that is rare among artists in postmodern times. He insisted that his work was not about Minimalism. He preferred the term “reductivist.” Again, from a historical vantage point, the latter term is unquestionably more appropriate; and from a practical viewpoint, it was clearly shrewd and neces sary to avoid ambiguous references which might imply imitation. In spite of his obvious allegiance to Ad Reinhardt, and to a nearly equal extent, Barnett Newman, Ellsworth Kelly, and early Frank Stella, Stamm allowed his paintings to progress in a more personal direction. Ted Stamm, DGR-42 , 1977-78, oil on canvas, 431 x 113 inches The term “for mal” is not misleading, but the label “formalist” clearly is. “I am interested in making a work which is read as a totality in its Formalism suggests that the content is the form, whereas with situation and remains confrontational by perceiving its nature and Stamm the linkage between content and form was more intertwined installational effects upon the actual exhibition space.

  • Sean Scully, 1945 —
Sean Scully, 1945 — Sean Scully (b. 1945, Dublin, Ireland) is an American-Irish artist who is internationally recognised for his distinctive abstract compositions that interrogate the properties of light, colour and form. Scully studied painting at Croydon College of Art, London and Newcastle University, UK, where he began to work in abstraction. During a trip to Morocco in 1969, Scully was strongly influenced by the local textiles and rich colours of the region, which he translated into the broad horizontal stripes and deep earth tones that characterise his mature style. Scully’s travels throughout Morocco and Mexico would also prompt his decision to move from Minimalism to a more emotional and humanistic form of abstraction. Following fellowships in 1972 and 1975 at Harvard University, Scully’s paintings became increasingly monumental and sculptural, consisting of interconnected three-dimensional panels that anticipated his later sculpture practice. In 1984 he began to develop the Wall of Light series, replacing the precise stripes of his early paintings with solid blocks of colour, built with increasingly loose and feathered brushstrokes into vertical and horizontal ‘bricks’ that suggest a wall of stone. Subtle differences in colour in the paintings indicate the location in which they were created, the changing seasons and the artist’s own emotions. This series formed the subject of a major touring exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 2007. In 1984 Scully achieved international breakthrough through his inclusion in the major group exhibition An International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

  • In the Mid '70S When I Was a Young Painter Trying To
Robin Bruch Major Works on Paper (1972-1985) II 01.05. - 13.06.2015 In the mid '70s when I was a young painter trying to find my way in New York, I especially liked visiting an uptown gallery that has since become legendary, the Bykert Gallery at 24 East 81st Street. Klaus Kertess, the gallerist, was amazingly open and generous. I could wander back into his office and he would ask what shows I had seen and question me about my interests. He made a completely unknown painter feel included in the ongoing conversation about art at his gallery. I saw many remarkable shows there: Dorothea Rockburne, Brice Marden, Ralph Humphrey, Bill Bollinger and many others. In many ways these shows were my New York education. I saw one painting in a group show there in 1975 that especially impressed me. Asked by other painters, then and now, I often mention this painting which was by a painter who I didn't know and have never met: Robin Bruch. The mid '70s were a hard time for painters. After the discoveries of minimalism and Pop art, performance and installation, it sometimes seemed impossible to find a way to continue doing innovative work within painting. I was a committed painter but how could I achieve what I longed for? Were new forms of painterly painting possible? The painting I saw by Robin Bruch in that group show offered new possibilities by combining geometric forms with rough direct, painterly mark making. The surface brought together two kinds of painting that seemed previously to belong in separate categories and impossible to combine.

-- For immediate release Jason Martin Space, Light, Time 5 June – 21 August 2021 2/F, 27 Huqiu Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai 200002 Jason Martin, Untitled (Ultramarine blue), 2021 Mixed media on aluminium. Tondo, diameter 144.5 x 15 cm (56 7/8 x 5 7/8 in) © Jason Martin, courtesy Lisson Gallery Lisson Gallery is pleased to present Jason Martin’s first solo exhibition in Shanghai, unveiling eight new works created specifically for the show. As the title suggests, the exhibition is a return to the fundamentals of life – Space, Light, Time – and a mark of appreciation for these facets following the turmoil of the past year, as well as to the foundations of painting. This ensemble of works, all sculpted paste on aluminum with pure pigment, were created by the artist in his studio in Portugal. Martin has gained renown for his thick impasto, gestural paintings that challenge our perception of two and three- dimensionality by occupying space beyond the panel itself, balancing on the precipice between painting and sculpture. Since studying at Goldsmiths College in London in the early 1990s, the artist has pushed the boundaries of painting to its limits, at times even pouring paint beyond the borders, surpassing the confines of the panel. Previous works have been characterised by the single sweeping brushstroke, but here Martin adopts a more visceral, fluid approach using his hands rather than a tool and created flat as opposed to on the wall. While the earlier oil works, derived from Minimalists such as Robert Ryman and Frank Stella, bore a certain chance encounter, this new body of paintings references Yves Klein and Lucio Fontana in their primary concern with colour as well as the presence of the body; Martin leaves a physical echo in his works through the evident trace of his hands.

  • Press Release Ted Stamm Woosters
Press Release Ted Stamm Woosters 9 March – 14 April 2018 504 W 24th Street, New York Lisson Gallery presents the first exhibition of Ted Stamm’s work at Lisson Gallery New York, featuring paintings, works on paper, archival material and photographs from the artist’s “Wooster” series. Ted Stamm was born and raised in Brooklyn and Long Island, and rarely strayed from the New York metropolitan area. After beginning his career painting colourful lyrical abstraction in his post-graduate days in the late 1960s, Stamm quickly set out to explore painting beyond tradition and to introduce further layers of complex colour, form and line. While many other painters of the period like Alan Charlton, Robert Ryman and Brice Marden were also experimenting in monochrome, following the success of late Modernist post-war artists such as Yves Klein, Ellsworth Kelly and Robert Rauschenberg, among others, Stamm quickly furthered his experimentation of the use of a minimal palette by introducing composition, through the precision of the line and the shaped canvas. Stamm lived and worked on the top floor of 101 Wooster Street in the downtown Manhattan neighbourhood of SoHo from 1972 to his untimely death in 1984. In 1974, Stamm encountered an irregular shape on his street — a rectangle joined on the left by a slightly shorter triangle. Using this form as the inspiration, he began what he titled the “Wooster” series. These geometric forms with hard edges furthered the artist’s earlier experimentations of formalist elements of the line and literal as well as depicted shapes. The exhibition at Lisson Gallery will include a selection of paintings from this series, including a large-scale “Lo Wooster” (a variation of the aforementioned shape, hung close to the ground) as well as works on paper, archival material and photographs.

Text by Tessel M. Bauduin, Daniel Birnbaum, Briony Fer, Vivien Greene, David Max Horowitz, Andrea Kollnitz, Helen Molesworth, Julia Voss.
