BINONDO FOOD TRIP (4 hours) Eat your way around Binondo, the Philippines’ Chinatown. Located across the Pasig River from the walled city of Intramuros, Binondo was formally established in 1594, and is believed to be the oldest Chinatown in the world. It is the center of commerce and trade for all types of businesses run by Filipino-Chinese merchants, and given the historic reach of Chinese trading in the Pacific, it has been a hub of Chinese commerce in the Philippines since before the first Spanish colonizers arrived in the Philippines in 1521. Before World War II, Binondo was the center of the banking and financial community in the Philippines, housing insurance companies, commercial banks and other financial institutions from Britain and the United States. These banks were located mostly along Escólta, which used to be called the "Wall Street of the Philippines". Binondo remains a center of commerce and trade for all types of businesses run by Filipino- Chinese merchants and is famous for its diverse offerings of Chinese cuisine. Enjoy walking around the streets of Binondo, taking in Tsinoy (Chinese-Filipino) history through various Chinese specialties from its small and cozy restaurants. Open to both serious amateurs and professionals alike, from fine art photographers to documentary photographers, from college students to seasoned photographers, it is a workshop that will emphasize the development of your own personal way of seeing photographically. This workshop will also be about learning how to edit your work intuitively, and will include discussions about how to take your photography to the next level. Beat Streuli, a Swiss photographer who started working in the 1980s, has presented his works in cities around the globe. Presently based in Zurich and Brussels, he has been actively working all over Europe and in many other parts of the world. He first received attention for his series from the early 1990s; some of this work was photographed in Rome, Paris, and New York. Streuli takes photographs of local people in public places, often with a telephoto lens, focusing on them and their ordinary lives. He has begun to work more outside of Europe and the United States, in both Western and non-Western countries. Recently, his work has started to include more non-figurative, almost abstract elements. At the beginning of his career, Streuli produced and presented his works as small format and black and white photographs, but in the early 1990s, he developed new forms of presentation, working with floor to ceiling, multi-screen slide and video projections. He also started working with large scale images installed on the façades of public buildings in various cities, and with monumental billboard installations. For the past twenty years, Streuli's work has been frequently exhibited around the world; he has also realized many temporary and permanent projects in public spaces. -

Art Exhibition October 2011 - January 2012 Barbara Kasten Barbara Kasten, a Chicago born artist, is best known for her photographs of well known architectural sites. She experiments with different photographic processes such as color, light and focus, while conveying meaning through the elements involved. Her use of architecture as an inspiration is prevalent throughout her art, and as seen here, she infuses pops of color to highlight vivid angles and sharp lines. She explores the relationship between light in a setting of large-scale assemblages, which ultimately makes light and shadows the subject. With influences from The Bauhaus and Constructivism, Kasten explores modes of reorganizing the visual environment while using geometric shapes and lighting to create an abstract interpretation. Barbara Kasten received her BFA in painting and sculpture from the University of Arizona in Tucson. She went on to receive her MFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA. Kasten’s work can be seen in many prestigious museums throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan, including The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Contemporary Photography and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Continuity and Mathematical Ontology in Aristotle

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11606/issn.1981-9471.v14i1p30-61 Continuity and Mathematical Ontology in Aristotle Keren Wilson Shatalov In this paper I argue that Aristotle’s understanding of mathematical continuity constrains the mathematical ontology he can consistently hold. On my reading, Aristotle can only be a mathematical abstractionist of a certain sort. To show this, I first present an analysis of Aristotle’s notion of continuity by bringing together texts from his Metaphysica and Physica, to show that continuity is, for Aristotle, a certain kind of per se unity, and that upon this rests his distinction between continuity and contiguity. Next I argue briefly that Aristotle intends for his discussion of continuity to apply to pure mathematical objects such as lines and figures, as well as to extended bodies. I show that this leads him to a difficulty, for it does not at first appear that the distinction between continuity and contiguity can be preserved for abstract mathematicals. Finally, I present a solution according to which Aristotle’s understanding of continuity can only be saved if he holds a certain kind of mathematical ontology. My topic in this paper is Aristotle’s understanding of mathematical continuity. While the idea that continua are composed of infinitely many points is the present day orthodoxy, the Aristotelian understanding of continua as non-punctiform and infinitely divisible was the reigning theory for much of the history of western mathematics, and there is renewed interest in it from current mathematicians and philosophers of mathematics. -
