Press Release Ryan Gander ‘I see you’re making progress’ 19 May – 31 August 2019 2/F, 27 Huqiu Road, Huangpu District Following a successful exhibition, ‘Human/Non Human/Broken/Non Broken,’ at collector David Chau’s Cc Foundation in 2017, this is Ryan Gander’s second solo show in Shanghai and features work in a variety of media, from time-based animation and a holographic piece, to free-standing sculptures and portrait paintings created since 2016. The exhibition’s title ‘I see you’re making progress’ reflects Gander’s constantly evolving practice and career trajectory, while the works also display this evolutionary process – from the confines of the artist’s mind and studio, towards the boundless possibilities to learn and develop from the outside world. A new work from 2019, View from the studio window (8th November 2017), depicts a hazy view of the world outside his workspace as it transitions from day to night throughout a 24-hour cycle. The animated screens behind the frosted glass approximate the exact light conditions and changing weather of that time and place – not to mention the gently swaying silhouettes of trees and the shadow of a chain link fence – all now transposed, seemingly impossibly, to an interior-facing gallery wall in Shanghai. Another windowpane appears in this show, this time one that has been white-washed and smashed, obscuring a hidden artwork never to be revealed, while also creating a new visceral abstract composition through the use of haphazard duct-taping. As well as gazing out of the window – with all the Romantic notions this inspires, from the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich to Henri Matisse – Gander is also concerned with the missteps, failures and cul-de-sacs of art production: those notorious opponents of progress. -

Ryan Gander Biography
Ryan Gander Ryan Gander has established an international reputation through artworks that materialise in many different forms – from sculpture to film, writing, graphic design, installation, performance and more besides. Through associative thought processes that connect the everyday and the esoteric, the overlooked and the commonplace, Gander’s work involves a questioning of language and knowledge, as well as a reinvention of both the modes of appearance and the creation of an artwork. His work can be reminiscent of a puzzle, or a network with multiple connections and the fragments of an embedded story. It is ultimately a huge set of hidden clues to be deciphered, encouraging viewers to make their own associations and invent their own narrative in order to unravel the complexities staged by the artist. Ryan Gander (born 1976, Chester, UK) lives and works in Suffolk and London. He studied at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK; the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, Netherlands; and the Jan van Eyck Akademie, Maastricht, Netherlands. The artist has been a Professor of Visual Art at the University of Huddersfield and holds an honorary Doctor of the Arts at the Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Suffolk. In 2017 he was awarded an OBE for services to contemporary art. Press Release Sean Scully The 12 / Dark Windows Sean Scully’s Studio, 447 West 17th Street, Chelsea, New York Lisson Gallery, 508 West 24th Street, New York 6 May – 17 June, 2021 The world in which we live, the existential threat from COVID and the environmental problems we face, has influenced me greatly in my art. - Sean Scully, 2021 Sean Scully will open a dual-presentation across two sites in Chelsea, New York, this May, unveiling new work created in his New York studio throughout 2020 and 2021, while the world was rocked by a global pandemic, extensive quarantine measures, Black Lives Matter protests, political instability and mass uncertainty. At Scully’s Chelsea studio, open exclusively for this showcase, the artist unveils a monumental new work entitled The 12 (2020), presented in its entirety for the first time. This twelve-panel piece is a grouping of Landline paintings, each with its own distinct personality ranging from spirited to sombre. A new Black Square Blue (2020) painting will also be on view at Scully's studio. The dual presentation continues at Lisson Gallery's flagship space on 508 West 24th Street which will house a significant multi-panelled painting entitled Dark Windows (2020): a suite of works created during some of the bleakest days of the COVID pandemic. The work will be presented alongside a series of new pastel drawings recently completed by the artist. The 12, a work comprising twelve unique Landline paintings, is an expansion on Scully’s ongoing series of lyrical paintings in which, since 1999, he has endeavoured to “integrate all the parts” of the horizon – physical and philosophical, poetic and pastoral. -

Press Release Julian Opie 7 November 2020 – 27 February 2021 2/F, 27 Huqiu Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai Opening: Friday 6 November, 5 – 7pm Lisson Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of all new work by renowned British artist Julian Opie, for his first solo exhibition with the gallery in Shanghai. The presentation features seven works depicting new subjects (all 2020) in a variety of media, with three large-scale group portraits, three stand-alone sculptures, and one moving computer animation. In this new body of work, Opie draws on the ubiquitous imagery of urban scenes and the cityscape, recalling the vocabulary of everyday life but instilling it with a new energy and vitality. The show coincides with Opie’s presentation as part of the Jing'an International Sculpture Project in Shanghai, as well as the unveiling of his commission for the Huarun Group Embankment Square Pudong. Opie, renowned globally for his contribution to contemporary art, draws on influences as diverse as billboard signs, contemporary dance, classical portraiture and sculpture. A central motif of Opie’s work is the human figure, whether depicted running, posing, walking or dancing, alone or in crowded cities. These portraits – found in public spaces in many major cities across the world – reflect the artist’s preoccupation with exploring the very nature of representation and the means by which it is perceived and understood. The artist’s bold colours and radically simplified forms can be seen here in the lightboxes, Old Street May 2. and Old Street June 1. where striking figures in white, yellow and black silhouette against vibrant orange and blue backdrops, alongside the quieter palette, Old Street August 12. -

It was within this recent historical context that I came to know Ted stamm 1990 (1989) Stamm and to appreciate his work. It was also within this context that I came to understand the kind of commitment and personal strength ESSAY BY ROBERT C. MORGAN required to maintain an “outsider” position when the art market takes an abrupt shift. I perceived in Stamm’s paintings, and later in his discourse, an extraordinary energy, a dynamicism that is rare among artists in postmodern times. He insisted that his work was not about Minimalism. He preferred the term “reductivist.” Again, from a historical vantage point, the latter term is unquestionably more appropriate; and from a practical viewpoint, it was clearly shrewd and neces sary to avoid ambiguous references which might imply imitation. In spite of his obvious allegiance to Ad Reinhardt, and to a nearly equal extent, Barnett Newman, Ellsworth Kelly, and early Frank Stella, Stamm allowed his paintings to progress in a more personal direction. Ted Stamm, DGR-42 , 1977-78, oil on canvas, 431 x 113 inches The term “for mal” is not misleading, but the label “formalist” clearly is. “I am interested in making a work which is read as a totality in its Formalism suggests that the content is the form, whereas with situation and remains confrontational by perceiving its nature and Stamm the linkage between content and form was more intertwined installational effects upon the actual exhibition space. -
Sean Scully, 1945 —
Sean Scully, 1945 — Sean Scully (b. 1945, Dublin, Ireland) is an American-Irish artist who is internationally recognised for his distinctive abstract compositions that interrogate the properties of light, colour and form. Scully studied painting at Croydon College of Art, London and Newcastle University, UK, where he began to work in abstraction. During a trip to Morocco in 1969, Scully was strongly influenced by the local textiles and rich colours of the region, which he translated into the broad horizontal stripes and deep earth tones that characterise his mature style. Scully’s travels throughout Morocco and Mexico would also prompt his decision to move from Minimalism to a more emotional and humanistic form of abstraction. Following fellowships in 1972 and 1975 at Harvard University, Scully’s paintings became increasingly monumental and sculptural, consisting of interconnected three-dimensional panels that anticipated his later sculpture practice. In 1984 he began to develop the Wall of Light series, replacing the precise stripes of his early paintings with solid blocks of colour, built with increasingly loose and feathered brushstrokes into vertical and horizontal ‘bricks’ that suggest a wall of stone. Subtle differences in colour in the paintings indicate the location in which they were created, the changing seasons and the artist’s own emotions. This series formed the subject of a major touring exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 2007. In 1984 Scully achieved international breakthrough through his inclusion in the major group exhibition An International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. -
